Why Is English Ivy Bad?

Have you seen this video? “Are you seeing “English Ivy Kills Trees” signage all over the Upstate? If that’s the case, I have two things to say. First and first, I am not responsible for the guerrilla battle to remove this plant pest, but I am relieved to see that someone else is grabbing the bull by the horns.

Now is an especially opportune time to get rid of unwanted English ivy from your yard. Because the weather is still cool, our soil is moist from winter rains, making it easier to take the vine from the ground now than in the coming months. Plus, it’s more pleasant to work outside while the weather isn’t yet scorching and the summer’s pesky insects haven’t arrived.

Because it requires little care, is largely pest-free, and is highly durable, English ivy (Hedera helix) is still widely farmed as a ground cover. Unfortunately, it is sometimes let to grow unchecked and subsequently seeds or spreads into wooded areas. a permanent fixture on the “It is now widespread in eighteen states on the Eastern Seaboard, including all states between New Jersey and Georgia, as well as the neighboring states of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee, according to the Plant Conservation Alliance’s “Least Wanted” list (www.nps.gov/plants/alien/factmain.htm).

By engulfing branches and obstructing sunlight from reaching the tree’s leaves, the vine weakens and kills the tree, preventing it from producing the food (photosynthesis) that fuels its development and assures its survival. Trees can eventually become entirely suffocated or die as a result of increasing deterioration.

The vine also works as a moisture trap, keeping the bark damp and rendering afflicted trees more vulnerable to a range of problems, including insect damage.

Worse, English ivy poses a threat to entire ecosystems. It creates dense and vast monocultures on the ground, displacing natural species. While it is frequently planted as an erosion deterrent, some experts argue that its shallow, matted root system may actually increase the risk of slope failure. Furthermore, bacterial leaf scorch (Xylella fastidiosa), a plant pathogen that can affect elms, oaks, maples, and other native trees, is a recognized reservoir of the invasive vine.

Finally, here’s a salvo: Many undesirable wildlife species, such as rodents, mice, slugs, snails, and mosquitoes, find a comfortable home under English ivy.

When Tim and I initially arrived to Marshall Forest six years ago, the first thing we did was clear ivy from the trees and ground in the forest part of our property, which descends down in a series of terraces to the Reedy River.

Making two cuts through the vines, one just above the ground and the other at around chest height, or at least 3 feet above the first, is the best technique to remove ivy from trees. Then, using a hand weeder (or screw driver) and brutal force, strip the region between the two cuts, causing the least amount of damage to the bark while ensuring that even the tiniest vine is severed. The ivy above the cut will dry and die in a month or so, but it will take years for the tree to fall.

Wear long sleeves and gloves when pulling ground ivy because you can come across hidden dangers like brambles or poison ivy. The procedure, on the other hand, is pretty simple and straightforward. Grab a handful of ivy with your non-dominate hand and pull it toward you while using a light-weight hand mattock to dislodge its roots from the ground. For several years, keep an eye on newly cleared areas, especially in the spring when new growth is probable.

The return of native plants to our wooded area was slow at first, but when dormant tubers and corms recovered with more moisture and sunlight, the quantity of bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis), mayapples (Podophyllum peltatum), and sweet Betsy trilliums (T. cunneatum) increased as well.

Where the slope needed strengthening, I put natives, particularly ferns.

English ivy can be replaced with a variety of plants. Consider the following indigenous, depending on the conditions: Green and gold (Chrysogonum virginianum), Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides), cinnamon fern (Osmunda cinnamomea), switch grass (Panicum virgatum), Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia), or galax (Pachysandra procumbens) (Galax urceolata). Consider bugleweed (Ajuga reptans), monkey grass (Liriope muscari), or dwarf mondo grass if you don’t mind non-native plants (Ophiopogon japonicas).

Is English ivy a bad idea?

(From Mary’s point of view) There’s no denying that English ivy is a magnificent plant with its profusion of lustrous, dark green leaves, and because it’s an evergreen, it stays that way all year. English ivy is frequently able to escape from home gardens. Even if you grow ivy in pots, which appears to be a safe option, birds can spread the seeds across long distances.

It spreads quickly and strangles neighboring plants. Ivy may grow up to 15 feet (5 meters) each year if established in the wild, choking any natural plants or trees in its path. Even tall, mature trees are deprived of air and sunlight, and they are more prone to break or topple over in a windstorm because they are ill and burdened down by the thick vines.

It is difficult to get rid of. Ivy removal from the trunk is more difficult than it appears, since the roots can become entangled with the tree’s roots, while rodents and bug pests seek refuge in the dense foliage. Attempts to address English ivy concerns in Oregon and Washington have cost taxpayers millions of dollars.

Other constructions are harmed. When the rootlets of English ivy attach themselves to a building, they can cause serious harm. Plants can adhere so strongly to a building that they peel paint, damage siding, and even grow through window casings into the interior.

These plants are extremely poisonous. If that wasn’t bad enough, English ivy berries and leaves are poisonous if eaten, and the sap can cause severe skin irritation.

Why is English ivy so invasive?

When birds eat and scatter the berrylike fruits of English ivy, it spreads through runners as well as seed. Vines climb and cover trees, depriving them of sunshine and eventually killing branches and trees. Mosquitoes breed in puddles and moist soil, which are hidden by dense ivy mats on the ground.

How does English ivy harm trees?

Ivy removal from trees is a particularly difficult task. Many people wonder if ivy will harm their trees. Eventually, the answer is yes. As it climbs, ivy weakens the bark and will eventually cover even a mature tree, weakening branches and preventing light from accessing the leaves. Plants and trees that are weaker are more vulnerable to pests and disease. To prevent the ivy from climbing back up the tree, it is preferable to remove it off the tree and keep it at least 3 to 4 feet (1-1.5 m) away from the trunk.

If you want to get rid of ivy on a tree, don’t just take it off. Because the roots are firmly hooked into the bark, taking the plant out will also remove some of the bark, causing the tree to suffer damage.

Instead, cut an inch (2.5 cm) or two out of the ivy stem and remove it starting at the tree’s base. Apply a full strength non-selective herbicide to the cuts on the still attached stem. Rep the procedure every few feet (1 m.) up the ivy’s stem as high as you can. It’s possible that you’ll have to do this a few times before the English ivy is completely eradicated. You can remove the stems from the tree once the ivy has perished since the roots will break away rather than cling to the tree.

Chemical management should be utilized only as a last resort because organic methods are more environmentally friendly.

How does the English ivy affect the environment?

English ivy forms dense carpets on forest floors, displacing native vegetation, and it is one of the few invasive plants that can live in complete, deep shade. Although this is rare on older trees, when ivy climbs trees, the foliage can weigh them down and cause them to break and collapse.

When to control

When working on ivy, make sure there are no birds nesting nearby, as it is illegal to damage or destroy a wild bird’s nest while it is in use or being built under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981. The nesting season for birds is commonly thought to stretch from March to August (though it may last longer for certain species or multiple broods so always check if in doubt).

Consider whether this may be accomplished without the use of chemicals, for as by digging out or cutting the stem off at ground level. Chemical controls may be required if these procedures are not viable.

The RHS thinks that the first line of defense against pests, diseases, and weeds should be proper cultivation practices, cultivar selection, garden hygiene, and supporting or introducing natural enemies. If chemical controls are utilized, they should be applied sparingly and with great precision.

Cultural control

Use non-chemical procedures whenever possible. The stems should be chopped all the way down to the ground, and the woody stump should be pulled away.

If removal is impossible due to proximity to foundations, cutting the stems to ground level on a regular basis may weaken the ivy over time but is unlikely to destroy it.

Weedkiller control

  • Severing the stem and treating the stump with a proprietary glyphosate-based stump and rootkiller (e.g. Roundup Tree Stump & Rootkiller, SBM Job done) will kill ivy. Tough Tree Stump Killer (soluble sachet only), Doff Tree Stump & Tough Weedkiller, Westland Resolva Pro Extra Tough Weedkiller, Westland Resolva Pro Tree Stump Weedkiller) or triclopyr (Tough Tree Stump Killer, Doff Tree Stump & Tough Weedkiller, Westland Resolva Pro Tree Stump Weedkiller, West (Vitax SBK Brushwood Killer)
  • Although top growth can be treated with glyphosate or triclopyr, ivy is difficult to control with weedkiller sprays due to its glossy leaves. It’s possible that you’ll need to apply it again. The foliage can be removed off the wall once it has been dead.

Aerial roots are difficult to remove with a hard brush or paint scraper, although dead foliage and stems are reasonably easy to remove from walls.

Is it good to have ivy on your house?

Ivies have a reputation for causing harm to mortar and bricks as they climb, although this isn’t always the case. The majority of ivy damage can be traced to masonry that was already in poor condition before the ivy arrived. Ivy roots can get into small gaps and fissures in the mortar, but they aren’t powerful enough to create new ones. Once ivy roots have into those small, existing cracks, they grow, which is where the harm occurs.

No serious damage should occur if your home was recently built or if the mortar and bricks are in good condition. In reality, a number of research conducted at Oxford University discovered that ivy actually aids in the protection of structures. The presence of ivy protected structures from water damage and helped insulate them from both cold and hot temperature extremes, according to researchers.

Ivy, on the other hand, may quickly deteriorate ancient bricks, wood, stucco, and even plastic siding. The roots can easily penetrate siding seams and minor gaps in plaster, causing damage. When ivy is removed from stucco, the stucco may be removed as well.

Because covered exterior walls can retain moisture in, ivy is sometimes to blame for moisture problems in older homes. Although termites cannot climb up ivy to infiltrate a home, it is commonly blamed for bug and rodent damage. Carpenter ants, on the other hand, may scale ivy to find damp wood to eat.

All of this means that there are benefits and drawbacks to allowing ivy to flourish on your property. You’ll have to make your own decision. However, if you do decide to remove the ivy, proceed with caution. Large, established ivy vines could pull out any damaged mortar or loose bricks from buildings.

I suggest pruning the ivy vines at their base and allowing them to die naturally. The vines will dry out and naturally fall away from the house over the course of a season or two, minimising any potential damage caused by their removal.

Is English ivy poisonous to touch?

Ivy endemic to Europe, Western Asia, and Northern Africa is known as English ivy. Other places of the world have been introduced to the plant. Unfortunately, because ivy is an introduced plant, it may lack natural enemies to inhibit its spread and become invasive. The expansion of a “invasive” plant is rapid, causing harm to native organisms.

Ivy is a poisonous plant. Furthermore, after coming into contact with the plant, some people suffer dermatitis. Specific compounds in the plant, on the other hand, may offer health benefits. Even in North America, where it can be problematic at times, ivy offers other advantages. I’ll talk about English ivy from a North American perspective in this essay.

Where is English ivy a problem?

English ivy has spread throughout California and the northwest United States, posing a particular threat in coastal areas. English ivy is difficult to eradicate once it has established itself in a certain area.

What is English ivy good for?

English ivy is taken by mouth to treat and enhance lung function in persons with bronchial swelling, to help push mucus and other material up from the lungs, and to treat liver problems, spleen disorders, gallbladder disorders, gout, joint discomfort and swelling, and scrofulosis.

Burns, calluses, skin infections, inflammation, nerve discomfort, parasites, ulcers, joint pain and swelling, and vein edema are all treated with English ivy.

How does it work?

English ivy has expectorant effects and may stimulate mucus glands. This could help patients who are having trouble breathing owing to edema and clogging of respiratory passageways. English ivy may have antioxidant properties as well.

Control is rarely essential because ivy is not directly detrimental to trees and is beneficial to wildlife. Control will be required where it is undesired, such as when it obscures attractive bark or adds weight to an ailing tree. First, see if this can be accomplished without the use of chemicals, such as by digging out or cutting through the stems at ground level. Chemical controls may be required if these procedures are not viable.

On trees

The stems should be trimmed back to the ground as much as possible, and the woody stump scooped out. If removal is impossible due to proximity to the tree’s roots, cutting the stems to ground level on a regular basis may weaken the ivy over time but is unlikely to destroy it.

As an unwanted ground cover

All stems and woody roots should be dug up. On thick soils or in densely vegetated areas, this may be problematic. Clearing all top growth before applying weed-control fabric and a 10-15cm (4-6in) deep layer of bark mulch is an alternate control strategy where the site is not needed for planting. Allow at least two growing seasons to pass before removing.

Glyphosate and triclopyr: Ivy that is growing vertically can be killed by severing the stem close to the soil level and treating the stump with a glyphosate- or triclopyr-based stump and rootkiller (e.g. Roundup Tree Stump & Rootkiller, SBM Job done Tough Tree Stump Killer (soluble sachet only), Doff Tree Stump & Tough Weedkiller, and Westl (Vitax SBK Brushwood Killer).

Glyphosate: Ivy is difficult to eradicate with weedkiller sprays, in part because of its glossy, moisture-resistant leaf surface. In this case, harsh glyphosate formulations (e.g. Roundup Ultra, SBM Job Done Tough Weedkiller (soluble sachet only), or Ecofective Rootblast Super Strength Weedkiller) or Roundup Gel for spot treatment are the best options. Cover neighboring plants with polythene and keep it in place until the spray has dried to stop spray getting into touch with the foliage or green stems of other plants. Prior to treatment, bruising the leaves with trampling or the back of a rake may aid in weedkiller uptake. Treatment must usually be repeated in order to achieve effective control.

Vitax SBK Brushwood Killer, which contains triclopyr, can be used in rough grass areas because it will not harm long grass. However, it may alter the developing growth points of bulbs, especially if administered late in the season, resulting in leaf and maybe flower distortion the following season. As a result, avoid as much run-off into the soil as possible when treating areas under-planted with bulbs.
