Most ivy cultivars thrive in bright light, but not direct sunlight. Low to medium light is tolerated, although growth is slowed, and variegated specimens may turn completely green. Give a variegated ivy plenty of sunshine to keep its vibrant color. Artificial light or a window in the north, east, or west can be used to grow ivy.
Ivies should be watered thoroughly, then let to dry to a depth of 1/2 inch before watering again. Although ivies like moderate humidity, they may live in low-humidity environments. Its fruit contains 2 to 5 seeds with a diameter of 5.7 3.7 mm.
Belowground:
According to information from a Southeast exotic pest website, English ivy does not have a large underground root system. The roots of English ivy are often shallow, according to a California invasive plant article and a paper suggesting landscaping species for use in chaparral plant groups to lessen fire hazards. The root level of English ivy in Washington, DC ranged from 1 to 4.13 inches (3.0 -10.5 cm) below the soil surface. A research from Spain evaluated the rooting depth of numerous vines, including English ivy, and discovered that the average rooting depth was statistically identical across all species (P133).

As of this writing (2010), there was no information about the longevity of English ivy in North America. The oldest English ivy vines were 50 years old at one site along the Rhine River in France, while the oldest vines at another site were at least 66 years old. A 433-year-old English ivy stem has been discovered.

This climbing, evergreen ivy belongs to the aralia family and was brought to the United States during the colonial period. English ivy is a rogue vine that creeps across the ground until it finds something to climb, then blasts up the tree trunk or wall like a rocket.
The classic three or five-lobed leaf of the fast-growing vine and the less recognized unlobed leaf with a long petiole are the two leaf varieties seen on ivy. This variation in leaf form is attributed to the plant’s physiological age rather than its chronological age. Ivy will continue in the juvenile stage as long as it is kept on the ground or on an upward journey, and its leaves will retain their distinctive lobed appearance. This situation can be maintained indefinitely if the plant is kept in a groundcover bed.
A plant will magically convert to adulthood after it has climbed something and reached the point where it can no longer grow. Adulthood, of course, brings sex, and before you know it, you’ve got offspring to feed. The white blooms are spherical pincushion-like balls that grow in clusters at the ends of the branches that arise once the ivy has reached adulthood. The seeds are black when ripe and, despite being slightly dry, are nonetheless appreciated by birds.
Ivy climbs by modified stem roots that create a suction-cup structure known as a “hold fast,” rather than by twining. These suction cups stick to just about everything, including tree bark to brickwork, and they stay down even after the ivy is taken down. Nothing short of sandblasting will remove these well-cemented hold fasts if ivy is allowed to climb on a brick wall and then removed.
Ivy is “killing my tree,” as many people cry. While this may seem counterintuitive, English Ivy is not parasitic and does not destroy trees at least not healthy ones. Allowing ivy to climb trees will result in a thick trunk the size of a man’s arm that will quickly invade the tree’s canopy. However, because ivy is a shade plant, it normally hides in the canopy’s shadow, a few feet from full sun. All of the ivy at the top of the tree can cause vulnerable trees to tumble over in a strong wind, or struggling trees may produce so little new growth that the ivy shades out the remaining canopy.
It’s also worth mentioning the risk of ivy harming structures. If left to grow on a wall, ivy hold fasts can provide a maintenance problem, but they will not grow through and ruin sound mortar and brick. Ivy, on the other hand, can maintain the moisture content in the wood high and induce wood rot. It can also grow behind wooden siding, causing issues. Outside by the chimney of one of my previous residences, there was an ivy bed where it was permitted to climb. I had a wonderful houseplant that I didn’t have to water one spring when a shoot found its way through the wall. Because I’m a slacker, I imagined the vine was blocking a hole in the wall and so keeping chilly drafts out. My wife quickly pointed out my blunder before the vine grew large enough to cause serious damage.
Even in the most shady gardens, English Ivy may be a very effective groundcover, but it should not be allowed to climb, in my view. We are effectively sterilizing it by preventing it from ascending, much like we do with our dogs to avoid having to deal with unwanted progeny. Even if you prefer to let it roam free as nature intended, you may be confident that it will not greet you at the door one fine morning and strangle you as you walk to the drive to collect the newspaper.
Can you cut ivy and replant?
To assist keep moisture, water the sand thoroughly and place the planter in a plastic bag. To keep the bag moist, open it once a week and water as needed. Within six to eight weeks, the ivy twigs will begin to sprout and will be ready to replant in a permanent place.
Ivy plants root easily in water as well. Remove any bottom leaves and store them in a jar on a well-lit window sill. You should observe roots developing in the water after a few weeks. Although it is simple to root ivy plants in water, it is always ideal for the plant to be established in a solid planting medium, as transplanting water-rooted cuttings to the soil is more difficult and survival rates are lower. As a result, rather than water, the ideal technique to root an ivy cutting is in sandy soil.
Note that English ivy is a non-native plant in the United States, and it is classified an invasive species in many states. Before planting it outside, check with your local extension office.

Why is my ivy floppy?
