According to the UC Davis Weed Report, products containing the herbicides glyphosate, triclopyr, imazapyr, or a combination of the three are effective against English ivy. It is critical to prepare the herbicide solution so that the active component concentration is correct. A spray applied at too low a rate will not kill the ivy, whereas a spray applied at too high a concentration will kill areas of the ivy it comes into touch with before it can move throughout the plant and inflict more extensive damage or plant death.
How do I permanently kill English ivy?
Controlling vast areas of English ivy may necessitate the use of herbicides. When 3 to 5 new leaves grow on the English ivy vines in the spring, it’s time to apply a herbicide. This new growth lacks the waxy cuticle layer found on older leaves, allowing herbicides to penetrate more effectively. English ivy can also be mowed or trimmed back using a string trimmer. Herbicides can be sprayed when new growth occurs. For best results, mix and spray a glyphosate solution of 2 or 3 percent. Always follow the mixing, use, and safety instructions on the label. Due to several layers of vines and foliage, keep an eye out for new growth in places that were missed or improperly treated, and then repeat the glyphosate application.
Glyphosate is a systemic herbicide that is non-selective, has low soil action, and is less hazardous to neighboring tree and shrub roots than other herbicides. Spraying before perennials appear in the spring, or covering individual plants with plant containers, may be done if desirable plants are in the beds. Spray while the temperature is between 55 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Treatments will very certainly be required on a regular basis. Allow no spray to come into touch with attractive plants or trees’ foliage, stems, exposed roots, or trunks. Many landscape trees may be harmed by a glyphosate solution that penetrates their bark. Table 1 shows some examples of glyphosate-containing products.
Triclopyr is a systemic, broadleaf plant herbicide that can be used to manage English ivy. It is the primary ingredient in several brands of brush killers. As new growth emerges in the spring, apply a 2 to 5% triclopyr solution (3 to 5 new leaves per vine). Always follow the mixing, use, and safety instructions on the label. Due to several layers of vines and foliage, keep an eye out for new growth in places that were missed or improperly treated, and then apply triclopyr again.
Triclopyr may last slightly longer in the soil than glyphosate, but microbial breakdown is considerably faster in moist and warm circumstances, thus it is less likely to injure the roots of neighboring desirable plants. Triclopyr is sprayed on tree trunks and exposed tree roots, but it must not come into touch with them. If the air temperature is above 85 degrees Fahrenheit, do not spray triclopyr because the sprayed substance may become more volatile, potentially harming surrounding broadleaf plants.
Pesticides have the potential to harm pollinating insects such as honey bees and bumblebees. Unless absolutely required, avoid using spray pesticides (including insecticides and fungicides), as well as soil-applied, systemic insecticides. If spraying is necessary, do so late at night to minimize the direct influence on pollinating insects. However, it is critical to always read and follow the advice on each product’s label. Does vinegar kill English ivy?
Whether you’re wanting to get rid of poison ivy, English ivy, or other varieties of ivy, white vinegar is a safe, nontoxic way to do so, as vinegar’s acid component makes it an excellent weed killer among its many other uses around the house. If handled by human hands, poison ivy causes a terrible skin rash, and you should get rid of it as quickly as possible so that children and dogs don’t come into contact with it. With its vines creeping up the sides of houses and trees, English ivy may become invasive. If left untreated, ivy can cause structural damage to a home and ruin tree health, thus it should be removed.
When to control
When working on ivy, make sure there are no birds nesting nearby, as it is illegal to damage or destroy a wild bird’s nest while it is in use or being built under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981. The nesting season for birds is commonly thought to stretch from March to August (though it may last longer for certain species or multiple broods so always check if in doubt).
Control is rarely essential because ivy is not directly detrimental to trees and is beneficial to wildlife. Control will be required where it is undesired, such as when it obscures attractive bark or adds weight to an ailing tree. First, see if this can be accomplished without the use of chemicals, such as by digging out or cutting through the stems at ground level. Chemical controls may be required if these procedures are not viable.
The RHS thinks that the first line of defense against pests, diseases, and weeds should be proper cultivation practices, cultivar selection, garden hygiene, and supporting or introducing natural enemies. If chemical controls are utilized, they should be applied sparingly and with great precision.
On trees
The stems should be trimmed back to the ground as much as possible, and the woody stump scooped out. If removal is impossible due to proximity to the tree’s roots, cutting the stems to ground level on a regular basis may weaken the ivy over time but is unlikely to destroy it.
As an unwanted ground cover
All stems and woody roots should be dug up. On thick soils or in densely vegetated areas, this may be problematic. Clearing all top growth before applying weed-control fabric and a 10-15cm (4-6in) deep layer of bark mulch is an alternate control strategy where the site is not needed for planting. Allow at least two growing seasons to pass before removing.
Glyphosate and triclopyr: Ivy that is growing vertically can be killed by severing the stem close to the soil level and treating the stump with a glyphosate- or triclopyr-based stump and rootkiller (e.g. Roundup Tree Stump & Rootkiller, SBM Job done Tough Tree Stump Killer (soluble sachet only), Doff Tree Stump & Tough Weedkiller, and Westl (Vitax SBK Brushwood Killer).
Glyphosate: Ivy is difficult to eradicate with weedkiller sprays, in part because of its glossy, moisture-resistant leaf surface. In this case, harsh glyphosate formulations (e.g. Roundup Ultra, SBM Job Done Tough Weedkiller (soluble sachet only), or Ecofective Rootblast Super Strength Weedkiller) or Roundup Gel for spot treatment are the best options. Cover neighboring plants with polythene and keep it in place until the spray has dried to stop spray getting into touch with the foliage or green stems of other plants. Prior to treatment, bruising the leaves with trampling or the back of a rake may aid in weedkiller uptake. Treatment must usually be repeated in order to achieve effective control.
Vitax SBK Brushwood Killer, which contains triclopyr, can be used in rough grass areas because it will not harm long grass. However, it may alter the developing growth points of bulbs, especially if administered late in the season, resulting in leaf and maybe flower distortion the following season. As a result, avoid as much run-off into the soil as possible when treating areas under-planted with bulbs.

How do you stop ivy from growing back?
Okay, I understand that having 1,000 square feet of black plastic in your yard isn’t ideal, but it’s better than destroying your back and going nowhere.
Cook the Ivy Under Plastic
The ivy is deprived of water under the plastic. It cooks in the heat, killing the ivy, its roots, and even the seeds, preventing it from growing back.
Check under the plastic every few months to see if the ivy has died. It’s time to get rid of it for good once all the greenery is gone and all that’s left are dry, brittle, brown vines.
Remove the Dead Ivy
You may easily cut and pull the ivy after it has been solarized. Cut down the vines and stack the debris. There will be a great deal.
You can also try mowing over the vines to split them apart and make pulling them up easier.
Cut the ivy around the base of each tree and remove the roots below if you have any creeping up your trees.
Your biggest issue right now is getting rid of all that woody ivy. More fuel and wreath materials, in my opinion. For eerie Halloween wreaths, the twisting vines are especially fun.
Patch Up the Ground Underneath the Ivy
The ground may have some strange holes after being buried for many years under dense ivy. It’s a good idea to fill them in right now.
My yard had a few uneven patches, so we filled them in with soil. Before moving on to the following stage, make sure your ground is pretty smooth.
Lay a Barrier to Prevent Rebound Ivy
Your ivy should be gone for good now since it died under the plastic, but covering the ground is a sensible safety precaution.
- Cover the former ivy area with overlapping cardboard pieces. As the cardboard decomposes, this can help prevent any roots from developing.
- Jute netting should be used to cover the area. While waiting for the future plants to fill in, I performed this to help offer erosion control on my slope.
- Weed barrier landscaping cloth should be used to cover the area. The ivy that has died has no chance.
As needed, secure these layers with landscape staples. With your trusty mallet, pound them in.
What kills English ivy without trees?
Ivy may provide a charming touch to a tree, and some people adore the look. Regardless, once your tree has been overgrown with ivy, you should remove it. That’s when ivy usually starts to creep into the tree’s canopy.
Ivy can then begin to injure trees, especially English ivy, which grows quickly and is difficult to control. This is why.
Four Reasons to Remove Ivy from Trees
- Water and nutrients are shared by both trees and ivy. Because ivy is more aggressive than other plants, there’s a danger your tree isn’t getting enough nutrients.
- Vines can weigh down a tree branch, making it more likely to break in a storm.
- An ivy invasion weakens a tree over time, making it vulnerable to opportunistic bugs.
Best Techniques for Removing Ivy from Trees
Ivy can be removed by hand or drenched in vinegar to prevent it from hurting your tree. In any case, the most important thing is to get rid of the roots so the vines don’t reappear.
How to Get Rid of Ivy Roots (By Hand)
- Wait till after a rainstorm to water beneath the tree. Ivy is easy to remove in soft soil.
- Cut ivy stems from their roots at the bottom of the tree’s trunk with a hand pruner.
- Pull the roots out as deeply as you can. Remember, this is the most effective technique to eliminate the plant permanently.
- Allow the ivy that has grown on the tree to die naturally. It’s tempting to pull the plant out, but this might cause major tree bark damage!
- Check the tree on a regular basis to make sure no new ivy sprouts have appeared. If they’ve done it before, do it again!
Killing Ivy with Vinegar
- A considerable amount of vinegar should be sprayed directly on the ivy plant. If you water neighboring plants or grass, the vinegar will kill them as well.
- If there are still green leaves on the tree, don’t pick them off because this could damage the bark. Rather, spray the tree every few weeks until the ivy plant has fully died.
- Remove the ivy carefully, starting at the base, once it appears to be dead and brown.
Will Roundup kill poison ivy?
Even the hardest weeds and grasses are killed to the roots with Roundup Concentrate Poison Ivy Plus Tough Brush Killer, so they won’t come back. Poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac, as well as invasive vines and shrubs like kudzu and wild blackberry, are among the ivies and weeds that can be killed with this product.
How does vinegar kill ivy roots?
Spritz the mixture on the bothersome ivy, but be careful not to spray any plants you want to maintain.

What kills poison ivy permanently?
Dig up little plants to get rid of light infestations. You can also prune the plants back to the ground on a regular basis. They eventually starve to death. Start cutting around the time the leaves begin to open in the spring. Cut again when fresh growth appears. Every week or two, inspect the plants. Cut the shoots back to the ground whenever you observe green growth.
You should protect your hands and arms if you choose to trim back poison oak or poison ivy plants to eradicate them. Wear a long-sleeved shirt and long pants at all times. Wear gloves to protect your hands. Separate the garments from the rest of the family’s laundry. Consider using plastic bags, the long variety that newspapers and bread loaves come in, instead of disposable gloves. Put each hand into a bag and use rubber bands to bind the bags to your arms. Remove the bags by flipping them inside out once you’ve completed cutting. The bags will now be tainted with urushiol, the oil that causes the sensitive skin reaction, so be careful to throw them away.
Use a herbicide containing glyphosate, triclopyr, or a 3-way herbicide containing 2,4-D amine, dicamba, and mecoprop to chemically eliminate poison oak and poison ivy. For products containing these active components, see Table 1. Be cautious with these herbicides because they can destroy desired plants. If poison ivy or poison oak is growing among plants you want to save, trim it back and just spray or paint the herbicide on the freshly cut stems or stumps. Poison ivy and poison oak can be sprayed or painted without being trimmed down if there are no suitable plants nearby. When using herbicides, always read and follow the advice on the label.
Glyphosate, 2,4-D amine, dicamba, mecoprop, and triclopyr are herbicides that are translocated from the leaves and cut stems to the rest of the plant, killing the shoots and roots. It’s possible that you’ll need to apply more than once. It could take one to several weeks to determine whether you have successfully removed the plant, depending on weather and other circumstances, so be patient.
When you spray herbicides at the correct moment, they function better. Poison ivy and poison oak are particularly vulnerable to 2,4-D amine and dicamba treatments in late spring and early summer, when the plants are actively growing. Triclopyr is most effective once the leaves have fully expanded in the spring and before the color of the foliage changes in the fall. Glyphosate, combined to a 2 percent solution, provides the best control when sprayed 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after full bloom (early summer).
For poison ivy treatment in lawns, many of the 3-way herbicides can be used on tall fescue, bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, St. Augustinegrass, and centipedegrass. Read the label to ensure that each turfgrass species is safe to use, as well as the amount of product to use per gallon of spray. It is possible to submit more than one application. Although some products are not approved for use on residential lawns, triclopyr can be safely sprayed on tall fescue and zoysiagrass lawns. The products are listed in Table 1.
If weed control treatments containing triclopyr or 2,4-D are used on lawns, do not use the clippings as mulch in vegetable gardens or around ornamentals, since this may cause plant harm or death.
There are also treatments that contain a combination of 2,4-D, dicamba, and triclopyr, which should provide better control of poison ivy in lawns and other places where desirable plants are not present.
Care must be given when applying herbicides to beds designated for future ornamental planting because different herbicides may harm the plants to be installed. In comparison to the 3-way herbicides (a few weeks) and triclopyr (a few days), glyphosate has significantly less soil action (a few days) for planned beds (several months). Glyphosate is the safest choice for spray application in existing flower and shrub beds, as long as non-target plants are avoided. Applications of glyphosate are considerably less likely to penetrate through the soil, be absorbed by roots, and harm existing woody ornamental shrubs. For a list of brands and goods, see Table 1.
Allowing any of these materials to come into contact with the foliage, stems, or trunks of desirable plants must be avoided. Many herbicides can penetrate the bark and into the plant’s food and water transport system (the phloem and xylem parts), causing serious plant harm or death if the bark is thin.
Pollinating insects, such as honey bees and bumblebees, can be negatively affected by pesticide use. Unless absolutely required, avoid using spray pesticides (including insecticides and fungicides), as well as soil-applied, systemic insecticides. If spraying is necessary, do so late at night to minimize the direct influence on pollinating insects. For the control of insect pests and diseases, always consider less hazardous alternative sprays first. Sprays containing insecticidal soap, horticultural oil, neem oil extract, spinosad, Bacillus thuringiensis (B.t.), or botanical oils, for example, can help control a variety of tiny insect pests and mites that harm garden and landscape plants. Many insect pests are repelled by neem oil extract or botanical oil sprays, which may help to decrease plant damage. Pre-plant soil improvement, adequate plant spacing, crop rotation, mulching, providing lime and fertilizer depending on soil test results, and avoiding over-head irrigation and frequent watering of established plants are all cultural approaches to prevent or reduce the prevalence of plant diseases. There are also less toxic spray fungicides including sulfur or copper soap, as well as Bacillus subtilis-based biological control sprays for plant diseases. How do you kill English ivy without chemicals?
- Ivy groundcover can be mowed to ground level many times a year to inhibit the proliferation of the vine.
- Pull out any English ivy with a pair of thick gardening gloves, making sure to get all of the roots. To aid with any resistant roots, a trowel can be used instead of hand-pulling.
- For removing English ivy, some people use white vinegar instead of pesticides. Fill a sprayer or spray container halfway with vinegar and carefully bathe the vine, being careful not to splash any neighboring foliage. Check treated areas for dead or dying ivy after a week or so.
Because new plants can sprout from cut/broken stems, throw away the removed ivy as soon as possible after removal. It will root in your compost pile if you compost it!
To prevent the English ivy from returning, cover the removed area with a heavy layer of mulch (usually 6 to 8 inches).
