Hedera helix ‘Baltica,’ Hedera helix ‘Pittsburgh,’ Hedera helix ‘Star,’ and Hedera hibernica ‘Hibernica’ are all Class C noxious weeds on the Washington State Noxious Weed List and have been proved to be the most invasive in the Pacific Northwest (see below for pictures). Hedera hibernica is also known as Atlantic or Irish Ivy, however it is remarkably similar to English Ivy, and most people refer to it as English Ivy. In King County, these invasive ivy varieties are on the non-regulated noxious weed list. These species are not needed to be controlled by property owners.
Wherever practicable, the King County Noxious Weed Board advocates management of English Ivy and, if control is not possible, containment of spread. Planting English Ivy is also discouraged, and non-invasive alternatives are encouraged to lessen the plant’s harmful impacts in King County.
What is the difference between ivy and English ivy?
“In both leaves and petioles, Irish ivy, Hedera hibernica, is often larger than English ivy, Hedera helix. The Irish ivy leaf is wider than it is long, with a large terminal lobe, and bright greenish veins rather than white veins. In addition, English ivy has a musty odor, but Irish ivy has a sweeter odor.
“The distinction is substantial for a botanist. Irish ivy is a tetraploid with 96 chromosomes, whereas English ivy is a diploid with 48 chromosomes.
” Both species feature microscopic white leaf hairs, however the form of the hairs differs. The leaf hairs (known as trichomes) on English ivy are bristly and radiate in all directions, but those on Irish ivy lie flat on the leaf surface. With a magnifying glass, these leaf hairs can be seen. When the two species do cross pollinate on rare occasions, the resulting plants are sterile and cannot reproduce by seed.”
If an ivy is crawling far and wide across the ground, over and under tiny shrubs, it is most certainly Irish ivy and should be controlled by all means possible, in my experience.
Although English ivy can spread quickly, much of what we call English ivy is actually Hedera hibernica.
Is Hedera helix the same as English ivy?

How do you identify Hedera helix?
The majority of juvenile leaves are dull green, lobed, and have noticeable light veins, and they reproduce by developing roots at stem nodes. Mature leaves are glossy green and unlobed, and the plant reproduces by producing umbrella-shaped clusters of greenish flowers, which are followed by black, berry-like fruits. Ivy weighs trees down, making them more prone to falling.
Growth habit
The glossy, dark green leaves alternate along the stem. The leaf shape varies, but it is often three-lobed with a heart-shaped base. Mature leaves can be spade-shaped and without lobes. It can be used as a dense groundcover (in its juvenile stage) or as a climbing vine (adult stage). Dense foliage prevents other plants from growing because it blocks sunlight. By loosening the bark and trapping moisture against the trunk, heavy vines inflict harm and death to mature trees, creating an ideal environment for fungal disease and decay. In wind, snow, and freezing conditions, heavy vines can bring down trees. The disease bacterial leaf scorch, which affects maples, oaks, and elms, is spread by English ivy.
Conditions that favor growth
Although it prefers semi-shady, moist soil, it can be found in a variety of settings, including woodlands, fields, forest borders, roadsides, and coastal locations. It also grows on building facades, causing damage.

What is English ivy leaf?
The leaf of the common ivy plant, also known as English ivy or Hedera helix, is known as ivy leaf.
It’s a green climbing plant that grows on the sides of trees, houses, and fences, and it’s widely used as a decorative plant in gardens and on the sides of houses and fences.
You may be surprised to learn that ivy leaf has been used as a herbal remedy for hundreds of years.

In the Darjeeling hills, Hedera helix (Linn) is a common ivy of the Araliaceae family. It’s an evergreen woody climber that scales the walls and drapes a canopy of leaves over them. It’s also used as a decorative plant. It is used to treat benign warts in folkloric medicine. Inflammation is a natural defense mechanism. Inflammation, on the other hand, can be hazardous in situations like life-threatening hypersensitivity reactions to bug stings, medicines, and poisons, as well as chronic disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis, lung fibrosis, and cancer. Chronic inflammation is thought to be an important element in the evolution of neoplastic processes, as it has been shown to speed up cancer progression. Antioxidant, antispasmodic, and antiallergic activities have all been documented for Hedera helix extract. It has been reported on the effects of dry extracts on the respiratory functions of children with chronic bronchial asthma, as well as their antitumor properties. In the current study, Hedera helix was examined for its antiinflammatory qualities using 2 percent formalin to induce inflammation in the hopes of finding novel herbal sources for the treatment of inflammation and cancer. Diclofenac was used as the reference drug in anti-inflammatory trials. Hedera helix extract has also been studied for its antiarthritic properties.
The study used Swiss Albino mice (6-8 weeks old) of both sexes. The experimental and control groups were made up of animals of similar age and weight. All animal studies were conducted in accordance with the Animal Ethics Committee’s recommendations (Reg number. 840/ac/04/CPCSEA).
Plant leaves were collected and identified at the Botany Department of St. Joseph’s College, Darjeeling, for the manufacture of Hedera extract. Water was used to wash the leaves. 10 g of the leaves were taken and mashed to a paste in a mortar and pestle after soaking away excess water. A total of 15 millilitres of 100% alcohol was added and stored at 4° for 12 hours. The extract was then filtered using Whatman filter paper no. 1; the filtrate was then filtered using a Millipore filter, and the final solution was kept at 4° for further use.
The mice were placed into five groups, each with eight animals (Group A, B, C, D and E). Group A mice were utilized as controls 20 minutes before inflammation was induced, and each animal in Group A received only phosphate buffered saline (PBS) intraperitoneally (i.p.) (3 ml/kg). Ethanol Hedera extract 2.5-7.5 ml/kg wt (25 l, 50 l, and 75 l each animal) was given i.p. to Group B, C, and D test mice, respectively. As a reference medicine, Group E animals were given 100 mg/kg diclofenac. Because diclofenac is a nonsteriodal antiinflammatory medication, it was chosen. In experimental animal models, diclofenac has been shown to reduce inflammation caused by a variety of phlogistic agents. For its antiinflammatory and analgesic properties, diclofenac is often used in the treatment or management of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. By reducing prostaglandin synthesis and/or production, diclofenac lowers inflammation, edema, and arthritic pain. In vitro, the medication reduces chemotaxis, superoxide harmful radical formation, oxygen-derived free radical generation, and neutral protease production by affecting polymorphonuclear leukocyte activities.
The oedematogenic agent was freshly made 2 percent formalin. Each animal was injected with 20 l of formalin directly on the subplantar region of the left hind paw by exmire microsyringe 20 minutes after receiving PBS in control animals and varied doses of plant extract and reference medication in experimental animals (ITO Corporation, Tokyo, Japan). Because it closely resembles human arthritis, formalin-induced paw oedema is one of the most suitable test techniques for screening chronic antiinflammatory drugs. Formalin has a biphasic nociceptive action because it operates as an early neurogenic component followed by a tissue-mediated response. Hedera extract’s antiinflammatory reaction to formalin-induced paw oedema implies that it could be effective in the treatment of inflammation-related disorders including arthritis.
Increases in paw thickness in control and experimental animals are Pc=PtPo and PT=PtPo, respectively, and percent inhibition=(/Pc)100, where Pt is paw thickness at time t, Po is initial paw thickness, Pc is control animal increase in paw thickness, and PT is treatment animal increase in paw thickness.
Inflammation of the pedals was visible 5-8 minutes after formalin injection. Vernier callipers were used to measure the thickness of the paws before and after formalin treatment. After formalin injection, the thickness of the paw was measured at 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180 minutes. Student’s t test was used to statistically analyze the data, and P values less than 0.001 were considered significant. The mean and standard deviation were used to represent all of the data.
In treatment animals, paw thickness grew until 90 minutes after induction and then steadily declined, but in control animals, paw thickness increased consistently. The paw thickness in diclofenac and 75 l Hedera extract treated animals returned to approximately normal size within 180 minutes (
Is Hedera ivy invasive?
The non-native English ivy (Hedera helix) is an invasive evergreen climbing vine that covers and kills trees. This ivy chokes out other plants as a ground cover, creating a “ivy desert” where nothing else can grow.
What does creeping ivy look like?
With strong veins and broad rounded margins, the leaves are round to kidney-shaped. Long petioles hold these leaves above the canopy (leaf stems). Ground ivy is even more difficult to eradicate since its spreading stolons root vigorously at the node.
What does ivy vines look like?
- Three leaflets are always present at the end of a long stem of poison ivy. Although immature plants may only show three leaves per stem, Virginia creeper has five leaves per stalk. Early in the spring, boxelder may only have three leaves, but by the end of the season, it will have five to seven, along with “helicopter” seeds.
- The leaves of poison ivy have a characteristic leaflet design. Each leaf stalk has one large leaflet at the end, with two smaller leaflets opposite one another on extremely short stalks below it. The two opposite leaflets are sometimes fashioned like mittens.
- Leaflets of poison ivy can be smooth, rounded, or spiky. In the early season, they are green, but in the fall, they turn a vivid crimson color. Poison ivy leaves are usually waxy and lustrous, however they can become dull after rain.
