English ivy, also known as common ivy or Hedera helix, is a climbing evergreen plant that thrives in cold and low-light environments. You’ve probably seen it growing up ancient building walls before (1).
The plant is popular among gardeners because it stays green all year and forms a lovely ground cover.
The plant is native to Europe, but it has since spread throughout the United States and the rest of the world. English ivy grows well in dark forest clearings, as well as on cliffs and slopes with fertile, damp soil (1, 2).
Aside from being attractive, English ivy may also provide some health benefits. It’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, and it’s been used as a herbal remedy to treat (3):
Does English ivy stay green in winter?
English ivy (Hedera helix) maintains its dark green hue throughout the winter, and the vines can form a dense groundcover. However, be cautious where you plant this ivy because it can climb trees and push out other species.
Growth habit
The glossy, dark green leaves alternate along the stem. The leaf shape varies, but it is often three-lobed with a heart-shaped base. Mature leaves can be spade-shaped and without lobes. It can be used as a dense groundcover (in its juvenile stage) or as a climbing vine (adult stage). Dense foliage prevents other plants from growing because it blocks sunlight. By loosening the bark and trapping moisture against the trunk, heavy vines inflict harm and death to mature trees, creating an ideal environment for fungal disease and decay. In wind, snow, and freezing conditions, heavy vines can bring down trees. The disease bacterial leaf scorch, which affects maples, oaks, and elms, is spread by English ivy.
Conditions that favor growth
Although it prefers semi-shady, moist soil, it can be found in a variety of settings, including woodlands, fields, forest borders, roadsides, and coastal locations. It also grows on building facades, causing damage.

Does English ivy turn red in winter?
No plant, including English Ivy, enjoys weather changes or temperature extremes. In some situations, the cool air of winter or fall can cause pigmentation, especially if the soil is also cold. In this situation, the leaves may not be totally red, but they may take on a reddish hue.
Strong heat can also cause problems by dehydrating the plant and causing pigmentation. It might also pose problems if the soil does not drain well.
What ivy keeps its leaves in winter?

Does ivy last all year round?

Why is English ivy a problem?
Have you seen this video? “Are you seeing “English Ivy Kills Trees” signage all over the Upstate? If that’s the case, I have two things to say. First and first, I am not responsible for the guerrilla battle to remove this plant pest, but I am relieved to see that someone else is grabbing the bull by the horns.
Now is an especially opportune time to get rid of unwanted English ivy from your yard. Because the weather is still cool, our soil is moist from winter rains, making it easier to take the vine from the ground now than in the coming months. Plus, it’s more pleasant to work outside while the weather isn’t yet scorching and the summer’s pesky insects haven’t arrived.
Because it requires little care, is largely pest-free, and is highly durable, English ivy (Hedera helix) is still widely farmed as a ground cover. Unfortunately, it is sometimes let to grow unchecked and subsequently seeds or spreads into wooded areas. a permanent fixture on the “It is now widespread in eighteen states on the Eastern Seaboard, including all states between New Jersey and Georgia, as well as the neighboring states of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee, according to the Plant Conservation Alliance’s “Least Wanted” list (www.nps.gov/plants/alien/factmain.htm).
By engulfing branches and obstructing sunlight from reaching the tree’s leaves, the vine weakens and kills the tree, preventing it from producing the food (photosynthesis) that fuels its development and assures its survival. Trees can eventually become entirely suffocated or die as a result of increasing deterioration.
The vine also works as a moisture trap, keeping the bark damp and rendering afflicted trees more vulnerable to a range of problems, including insect damage.
Worse, English ivy poses a threat to entire ecosystems. It creates dense and vast monocultures on the ground, displacing natural species. While it is frequently planted as an erosion deterrent, some experts argue that its shallow, matted root system may actually increase the risk of slope failure. Furthermore, bacterial leaf scorch (Xylella fastidiosa), a plant pathogen that can affect elms, oaks, maples, and other native trees, is a recognized reservoir of the invasive vine.
Finally, here’s a salvo: Many undesirable wildlife species, such as rodents, mice, slugs, snails, and mosquitoes, find a comfortable home under English ivy.
When Tim and I initially arrived to Marshall Forest six years ago, the first thing we did was clear ivy from the trees and ground in the forest part of our property, which descends down in a series of terraces to the Reedy River.
Making two cuts through the vines, one just above the ground and the other at around chest height, or at least 3 feet above the first, is the best technique to remove ivy from trees. Then, using a hand weeder (or screw driver) and brutal force, strip the region between the two cuts, causing the least amount of damage to the bark while ensuring that even the tiniest vine is severed. The ivy above the cut will dry and die in a month or so, but it will take years for the tree to fall.
Wear long sleeves and gloves when pulling ground ivy because you can come across hidden dangers like brambles or poison ivy. The procedure, on the other hand, is pretty simple and straightforward. Grab a handful of ivy with your non-dominate hand and pull it toward you while using a light-weight hand mattock to dislodge its roots from the ground. For several years, keep an eye on newly cleared areas, especially in the spring when new growth is probable.
The return of native plants to our wooded area was slow at first, but when dormant tubers and corms recovered with more moisture and sunlight, the quantity of bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis), mayapples (Podophyllum peltatum), and sweet Betsy trilliums (T. cunneatum) increased as well.
Where the slope needed strengthening, I put natives, particularly ferns.
English ivy can be replaced with a variety of plants. Consider the following indigenous, depending on the conditions: Green and gold (Chrysogonum virginianum), Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides), cinnamon fern (Osmunda cinnamomea), switch grass (Panicum virgatum), Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia), or galax (Pachysandra procumbens) (Galax urceolata). Consider bugleweed (Ajuga reptans), monkey grass (Liriope muscari), or dwarf mondo grass if you don’t mind non-native plants (Ophiopogon japonicas).
Does English ivy change color?
Ivies are a popular plant with a large range of variations. Ivy leaves come in a variety of forms, sizes, and hues. Because of its easy growth patterns, many gardeners like cultivating ivy plants indoors. For an intriguing experiment, find an indoor place for your ivy plant and then attempt varied amounts of sun exposure. The leaf of an ivy plant will change color in response to the quantity of light it receives when you limit the amount of light it receives.
Is my ivy dead or dormant?
What is the best way to know if a plant is dead? While this may appear to be a simple question to answer, determining whether or not a plant is genuinely dead can be tricky at times. Plants lack vital indicators such as a heartbeat or breathing in and out, which would allow us to determine whether they are genuinely dead or alive. You’ll have to rely on more subtle cues instead.
Don’t be alarmed if your plant has lost all of its leaves or if the leaves have all turned brown. If you fear your plant is dead but aren’t sure, the quickest way to know is to look at the stems. If the plant is still alive, the stems should be bendable and firm, with a green cast on the interior.
If the stem is mushy or fragile, look for the same symptoms in the roots. The roots should be flexible but solid as well. The plant is dead if both the stems and roots are brittle or mushy, and you’ll have to start over.
