When to control

When working on ivy, make sure there are no birds nesting nearby, as it is illegal to damage or destroy a wild bird’s nest while it is in use or being built under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981. The nesting season for birds is commonly thought to stretch from March to August (though it may last longer for certain species or multiple broods so always check if in doubt).

Control is rarely essential because ivy is not directly detrimental to trees and is beneficial to wildlife. Control will be required where it is undesired, such as when it obscures attractive bark or adds weight to an ailing tree. First, see if this can be accomplished without the use of chemicals, such as by digging out or cutting through the stems at ground level. Chemical controls may be required if these procedures are not viable.

The RHS thinks that the first line of defense against pests, diseases, and weeds should be proper cultivation practices, cultivar selection, garden hygiene, and supporting or introducing natural enemies. If chemical controls are utilized, they should be applied sparingly and with great precision.

On trees

The stems should be trimmed back to the ground as much as possible, and the woody stump scooped out. If removal is impossible due to proximity to the tree’s roots, cutting the stems to ground level on a regular basis may weaken the ivy over time but is unlikely to destroy it.

As an unwanted ground cover

All stems and woody roots should be dug up. On thick soils or in densely vegetated areas, this may be problematic. Clearing all top growth before applying weed-control fabric and a 10-15cm (4-6in) deep layer of bark mulch is an alternate control strategy where the site is not needed for planting. Allow at least two growing seasons to pass before removing.

Glyphosate and triclopyr: Ivy that is growing vertically can be killed by severing the stem close to the soil level and treating the stump with a glyphosate- or triclopyr-based stump and rootkiller (e.g. Roundup Tree Stump & Rootkiller, SBM Job done Tough Tree Stump Killer (soluble sachet only), Doff Tree Stump & Tough Weedkiller, and Westl (Vitax SBK Brushwood Killer).

Glyphosate: Ivy is difficult to eradicate with weedkiller sprays, in part because of its glossy, moisture-resistant leaf surface. In this case, harsh glyphosate formulations (e.g. Roundup Ultra, SBM Job Done Tough Weedkiller (soluble sachet only), or Ecofective Rootblast Super Strength Weedkiller) or Roundup Gel for spot treatment are the best options. Cover neighboring plants with polythene and keep it in place until the spray has dried to stop spray getting into touch with the foliage or green stems of other plants. Prior to treatment, bruising the leaves with trampling or the back of a rake may aid in weedkiller uptake. Treatment must usually be repeated in order to achieve effective control.

If the spray droplet particles contact the leaf orimmature, green bark, glyphosate can cause significant harm to adjacent, attractive plants. On windy days, glyphosate should not be used. To reduce drift, coarse sprays with large spray droplets should be employed rather than delicate mist applications.

Glyphosate can be applied to fence rows, turfgrasses and pastures as a spot treatment, and ornamentals, fruit and nut trees as a guided treatment. Glyphosate can be used in conjunction with vine pruning in circumstances when poison ivy has grown into the canopy of large trees, up walls, or other vertical structures. The poison ivy plants are trimmed 2 to 3 feet above the soil surface in this way. The poison ivy above the cut will be killed by this method. Concentrated glyphosate can be used to treat the remaining vine. The chopped section of this stem can be treated with a glyphosate concentrate containing at least 41% glyphosate. Painting the fresh cut with full strength glyphosate solution or a 50 percent dilution in water is recommended. This treatment should take place within 48 hours of the glyphosate vine being cut. If any regrowth appears, it should be treated again with a 5% or 10% treatment solution.

Again, a 41 percent glyphosate solution is recommended for treatment — approximately 6 to 12 oz of 41 percent glyphosate solution per gallon of water. Once the foliage has fully developed, spray it till runoff starts. If poison ivy grows on trees, there is no need to be concerned if it is treated on huge trees with old, course brown bark, as the tree should not be harmed. If the tree’s bark contains green tissue, which is normal on deciduous trees that have been planted for one to two years, do not spray glyphosate on the tree’s bark.

,4-D

2,4-D is available as a stand-alone product or in combinations with herbicides including MCPP, dicamba, and triclopyr. Poison ivy is only moderately controlled with 2,4-D. Poison ivy control will be better with 2,4-D in conjunction with dicamba and triclopyr than with 2,4-D alone. However, herbicides that contain 2,4-D as one of the components in the mixture will usually provide greater control than dicamba (Banvel) or triclopyr (many tradenames). Poison ivy is treated with 2,4-D and 2,4-D mixes after the leaves have fully expanded. New growth flushes will necessitate more treatments.

Most turfgrasses and other grasses are unaffected by 2,4-D or 2,4-D combinations; however, many broadleaf plants (e.g., ornamentals, fruit trees, muscadines, grapes, cotton, tobacco, and many vegetables) are particularly susceptible to 2,4-D, and spray drift can severely harm these plants. Drift harm from 2,4-D can be reduced by using coarse sprays and staying at least a few feet away from vulnerable plants. Amine salts or esters are used to make 2,4-D products. Especially at high air temperatures (> 80° F.), esterformulations of 2,4-D are susceptible to vapor drift. Volatilization or vapordrift of 2,4-D ester herbicides can cause damage to sensitive plants far away from the original treatment site. During the hottest months of the year, ester compositions should be avoided. For use on weedy growth or cut stump treatments, follow the product’s specified guidelines.

Triclopyr

Triclopyr is a highly effective postemergence herbicide for poison ivy and a variety of other woody vines. For usage in commercial agriculture, forestry, and noncropland regions, this herbicide is supplied under a variety of brand names. The majority of these items aren’t available at lawn and garden stores or other retail outlets. Orthomarkets, on the other hand, sells triclopyr under the brand name Brush-B-Gon in a variety of retail shops. Brush-B-Gon is the favored triclopyr formulation for most homes.

Triclopyr, like 2,4-D, should be administered to poison ivy when the leaves are fully developed on a warm, bright day. Spraydroplet drift from triclopyrcan can harm desirable broadleaf plants, thus it should be avoided on windy days. For usage on actively growing weedy growth, follow the product’s specified guidelines. Triclopyr solutions, unlike glyphosate, should not be sprayed on mature tree bark. Some tree species’ bark can absorb triclopyr, which can cause serious harm.

Triclopyr (Brush-B-Gon) is safe to use around the house, on fences, and in non-garden areas. It can be used near ornamentals, but avoid spraying when the wind is blowing.
