According to information from a Southeast exotic pest website, English ivy does not have a large underground root system. The roots of English ivy are often shallow, according to a California invasive plant article and a paper suggesting landscaping species for use in chaparral plant groups to lessen fire hazards. The root level of English ivy in Washington, DC ranged from 1 to 4.13 inches (3.0 -10.5 cm) below the soil surface. A 433-year-old English ivy stem has been discovered.
