Even at minimum wage, manual options include a number of ways to hand-pulling, chopping, or excavating that, while generally environmentally safe and successful, cost between $2000 and $8000 per acre (i.e. 300 to 1300 hours or more of hand removal work per acre).
Cut the Ivy First for Best Results:
(This is a tutorial for removing English ivy; you should not use the same procedure to remove poison ivy because cutting it will distribute the poison ivy sap and could result in a dangerous reaction.)
Because ivy has a waxy leaf that is particularly resistant to herbicides, it’s better to score or cut it before spraying it with herbicide or vinegar. The leaves of the ivy can be trimmed off with a string trimmer. This will open up the wound and make it easier for the plant to absorb the pesticide.
You can use a lawnmower on flat surfaces to speed up the mowing process, as long as there are no risks underneath the ivy (like rocks, large limbs, or dips in the ground.)
Handling Ivy Growing on Trees:
Ivy growing on trees requires a few extra stages. Using loppers or pruning shears, cut the ivy around the tree trunk. Then pluck the ivy several feet away from the trunk of the tree. Inspect the larger roots at the base of the trunk and search for ivy growing over the roots. If you see any, clip it off so the ivy doesn’t strangle the tree roots.
Pulling the vines off the tree can damage the bark, so resist the desire. The greenery of the ivy will turn brown and eventually fall off when it dies.
Herbicide vs. Vinegar to Kill English Ivy:
You’ll need to use a herbicide to destroy English ivy after you’ve clipped the ivy.
You have the option of picking your poison (so to speak.) To get rid of the English ivy in our yard, I used herbacides that are specifically formulated to destroy ivy. Glyphosate, triclopyr, imazapyr, or a combination of the three should be included in the herbicide. If you get any on nearby plants or trees, this path is a little more forgiving. If you choose to go natural, mix one gallon of white vinegar with a teaspoon of dish soap; however, take careful not to get this mixture on any plants or trees you want to retain.
Removing the Ivy:
The ivy should start to die after a week or so, and its grip on the earth should diminish. Remove the ivy strands from the ground with a garden rake. If any roots resist raking, dig them out with a hoe. Because the earth is softer after a rainy day, this process will be much easier.
Tips for Removing Ivy Forever:
This could be a multi-year battle depending on the amount of ivy in your yard. However, the amount of ivy grows less and less each year. There are a few things you can do to make this battle go more smoothly:
- On a sunny day, cut and spray the ivy. Also, pick a day when there is no chance of rain for at least 24 hours.
- Follow up with raking in a few weeks (don’t just spray and leave the roots).
- Remove the ivy from the ground. The ivy should then be placed in trash bags or let to dry on a pallet, cardboard, tarp, or anything other than the earth.

How deep do English ivy roots go?
Both juvenile and adult stems can be found on individual English ivy plants. The ground cover is often formed during the juvenile phase. When vertical support (e.g., trees, shrubs, buildings, utility poles) is available, juvenile English ivy begins to climb, and vertical stems convert to the adult phase.
English ivy is a ground cover that grows 6 to 8 inches (10-20 cm) tall. When stems start ascending, they usually reach a height of 90 feet (30 meters), but they can occasionally climb higher, reaching the crowns of 300-foot (90-meter) conifers. English ivy uses root-like structures that secrete a sticky material to climb. According to one English book, English ivy adheres to substrates by countless tiny roots. Low-growing plants have narrow branches, but ascending and older trailingbranches can be 4 to 12 inches (10-30 cm) in diameter and have wrinkled bark. Leaves are normally 4 inches (10 cm) long and 2.5 to 5 inches (6.4-13 cm) wide in the juvenile phase and 3 to 5 lobed in the adult phase. On adult stems, flowers are arranged in umbels. Each umbel has 8 to 20 blooms and grows in clusters of 3 to 6. The English ivy fruit is a berry that is around 5 to 9 mm long and 6 to 9 mm wide, with an average weight of 281.5 mg. Its fruit contains 2 to 5 seeds with a diameter of 5.7 3.7 mm.
Belowground:
According to information from a Southeast exotic pest website, English ivy does not have a large underground root system. The roots of English ivy are often shallow, according to a California invasive plant article and a paper suggesting landscaping species for use in chaparral plant groups to lessen fire hazards. The root level of English ivy in Washington, DC ranged from 1 to 4.13 inches (3.0 -10.5 cm) below the soil surface. A research from Spain evaluated the rooting depth of numerous vines, including English ivy, and discovered that the average rooting depth was statistically identical across all species (P133).

The oldest English ivy vines were 50 years old at one site along the Rhine River in France, while the oldest vines at another site were at least 66 years old. A 433-year-old English ivy stem has been discovered.
It had a diameter of more than 20 inches (60 cm), although it’s unknown where it happened (Schenk 1893 cited in ).
How big are ivy roots?
English ivy roots typically grow 2-5 inches below the soil’s surface and can spread up to 10 feet from their initial planting location. They have the ability to grow through asphalt, brick, and concrete.
English Ivy also develops a network of surface runners that are 1/2 to 1 inch in diameter and 2 feet long, with roots at each junction, requiring you to dig down over 3 feet to completely remove them.

When to control
When working on ivy, make sure there are no birds nesting nearby, as it is illegal to damage or destroy a wild bird’s nest while it is in use or being built under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981. The nesting season for birds is commonly thought to stretch from March to August (though it may last longer for certain species or multiple broods so always check if in doubt).
Consider whether this may be accomplished without the use of chemicals, for as by digging out or cutting the stem off at ground level. Chemical controls may be required if these procedures are not viable.
The RHS thinks that the first line of defense against pests, diseases, and weeds should be proper cultivation practices, cultivar selection, garden hygiene, and supporting or introducing natural enemies. If chemical controls are utilized, they should be applied sparingly and with great precision.
Cultural control
Use non-chemical procedures whenever possible. The stems should be chopped all the way down to the ground, and the woody stump should be pulled away.
If removal is impossible due to proximity to foundations, cutting the stems to ground level on a regular basis may weaken the ivy over time but is unlikely to destroy it.

Weedkiller control
- Severing the stem and treating the stump with a proprietary glyphosate-based stump and rootkiller (e.g. Roundup Tree Stump & Rootkiller, SBM Job done) will kill ivy. - Although top growth can be treated with glyphosate or triclopyr, ivy is difficult to control with weedkiller sprays due to its glossy leaves. It’s possible that you’ll need to apply it again. The foliage can be removed off the wall once it has been dead.
Aerial roots are difficult to remove with a hard brush or paint scraper, although dead foliage and stems are reasonably easy to remove from walls.

What can you do with ivy roots?

If you want to get rid of ivy on a tree, don’t just take it off. Because the roots are firmly hooked into the bark, taking the plant out will also remove some of the bark, causing the tree to suffer damage.
Instead, cut an inch (2.5 cm) or two out of the ivy stem and remove it starting at the tree’s base. Apply a full strength non-selective herbicide to the cuts on the still attached stem. Rep the procedure every few feet (1 m.) up the ivy’s stem as high as you can. It’s possible that you’ll have to do this a few times before the English ivy is completely eradicated. You can remove the stems from the tree once the ivy has perished since the roots will break away rather than cling to the tree.
Chemical management should be utilized only as a last resort because organic methods are more environmentally friendly.
