On the other hand, unpleasant pests are attracted to ivy and vine plants. Beatles, spiders, aphids, and weevils are just a few of the creatures that live in an ivy mat or vine wall. Each climate zone has its unique plant species, as well as the insects that live on them. Cockroach feces also carry an odorant (aggregation pheromone) that attracts cockroaches to a particular location. Scrubbing cockroach dung with hot, soapy water will reduce the amount of aggregation pheromone present, which will attract cockroaches to the region.
- Remove water from the equation. The most critical aspect in cockroach survival is water. During instances of drought, they frequently come indoors in search of hydration. Eliminate water sources by following these steps:
- Pipe condensation (under sinks, in wall gaps) and pet drinking dishes can also be sources of moisture.
- Places outside where water can accumulate, such as cans, tires, and tree holes, should be removed.
- Remove Food Sources. Cockroaches don’t require a lot of food to survive, especially if there’s water nearby, but food availability can cause populations to explode quickly.
- Garbage should be appropriately stored and disposed of. Garbage can lids should be sealed, and the surroundings should be kept clean. Where food is found, surrounding the garbage can, and around the refrigerator, the biggest concentration of cockroaches in a residence is usually found.
- Wipe down counter tops frequently and instantly wash dishes after each use. To avoid food buildup, empty sink strainers.
- Keep crumbs and other food waste away from kitchen equipment including toaster ovens, microwaves, stoves, and refrigerators, as well as the surfaces around them.
- After opening, reseal all food (including pet food). Store it in the refrigerator or in a firmly sealed container.
- Vacuum or sweep the locations where people eat on a regular basis. Cockroach egg cases that aren’t killed by insecticides can also be removed by vacuuming.
- Harborages must be eliminated (shelter, refuge, etc.).
- Cockroaches require a location to reside in addition to food and moisture for survival. Cockroaches love dark, warm, and wet environments. Stacks of newspaper or cardboard, mounds of clothing, or cracks and fissures in structures are all common places to find little niches.
- Immediately discard any corrugated cardboard boxes that are no longer needed. In corrugated cardboard boxes, cockroaches reproduce in large numbers.
- Remove the mulch off the home. Large outdoor cockroaches breed well on pine straw mulch, but not so well in gravel or bare soil.
- Trim shrubbery and ornamentals back and away from the house. Outdoor cockroaches love ivy as a breeding ground.
- Fill in any holes, cracks, or fissures. Cockroaches can enter your home in a variety of ways from the outside. Adult cockroaches can fit into crevices as small as 1/16 inch and prefer 3/8 inch openings. Examine the area surrounding windows and doors, vents, plumbing and electrical lines, as well as the sewer and drain pipes.
- Dwellings divided by a common wall, such as apartments, are particularly challenging to manage. An infestation can spread from one unit to the next via a common wall’s plumbing. As a result, cockroaches from one apartment can readily spread to another, infesting a “clean” environment. Caulk gaps in common walls and around plumbing to help avoid this.
What kind of bugs live in ivy?

If the infestation is severe, you may want to consider getting rid of the plant entirely. If you catch aphids early enough, you should be able to keep the infestation under control and eradicate them before any serious damage is done.
Mealybugs
Mealybugs are tiny insects. They have a light hue and are frequently associated with scales. Female bugs are covered in a white wax-like substance that resembles cotton in appearance and texture. The wax on mealybugs prevents pesticides from working, making these bugs extremely difficult to control.
These insects like the lower surface of leaves as well as the leaf axils. These bugs create honeydew, similar to aphids, which permits moldy fungus to thrive on ivy leaves.
Mealybug prevention and control: To prevent and control the existence of mealybugs, use the following methods:
- Pick them from the plant by hand. This procedure is simple and successful if your infestation is new and/or light. If the infestation is severe, however, it is not suggested.
- Neem oil, imidacloprid, pyrethrins, cyfluthrin, permethrin, or acetamiprid can be sprayed on them.
If you have a more serious infestation, you may want to get rid of your ivy plant if it’s difficult to control. However, if you take the time to learn about aphid indications and habits, you might be able to detect them before they cause serious damage.
Spider Mites
Spider mites are classified as arachnids rather than insects. Because they are so little, visible plant damage is frequently the first indicator of an infestation. Spiderwebs are usually visible when an infestation is severe. Spider mites injure plants by devouring their sap, resulting in speckled leaves and a faded appearance to your ivy.
It’s critical to keep an eye on mites because if they go unchecked for too long, the leaves will turn yellow and your ivy will die. It’s worth noting that mites are more common in indoor houseplants than they are in outdoor plants, thus outdoor plants are at a lower danger.
Take use of the following strategies to effectively control and remove the presence of spider mites:
- To break up spiderwebs and flush out mites, saturate ivy with water and spray it all over.
- Spray with pesticide-coated soap, a sulfur-containing insecticide, or neem oil extract once a week for many weeks.
If you’re growing your ivy indoors and you’re having trouble with mites, try moving it outside during the summer to lessen the number of mites.
Fungus Nats
Nat larvae prefer to eat fungus found in plant soil. Roots are also a favorite food of some fungus nats. The leaves of your ivy plant may fall off if you have a severe infection. Nats are a problem when growing ivy inside, especially if you’re using potting soil with a lot of organic content. Overwatering the plants is the most common cause of this. As a result, taking the time to evenly water your ivy will help to keep your ivy free of nats.

The remedy to this problem is relatively easy in terms of prevention and elimination. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings if your plant can handle it. The larvae will naturally die off if your ivy is kept in dry circumstances.
Whiteflies
Whiteflies are not true flies, but are more closely related to the aphids and mealybugs mentioned before. They resemble white moths in appearance. Their wings are held at an angle and cover the body like a roof as they sleep. Whiteflies are similar to aphids in that they produce honeydew, which promotes the growth of moldy fungus. The afflicted plant’s growth may eventually be inhibited, and the leaves will turn yellow and die.
Removal and prevention: Getting rid of whiteflies is a straightforward process. Simply spray the ivy with insecticidal soap, paying special attention to the lower surface of the plant leaves. Planting imidacloprid plant spikes in the soil will also help to keep the files at bay.
When whiteflies are startled, they flutter around for a while before returning to their original position. As a result, they’re easy to identify, allowing you to catch the infestation before it gets out of hand.
Scale
Scales are insects that live on houseplants in a variety of kinds. They are divided into two types: soft scales and armored scales. Both groups generate a waxy seal over the top of their bodies, however it is only necessary for the soft scale body, not the armored scale. The wax on the armored scale can be removed in order to identify and find the insect underneath it.
The appearance of scales varies greatly according on gender, age, and species. They can be found on the undersides of leaves and the surfaces of stems. They can, however, be found on the upper surface of leaves as well.
They also cause damage to the plant by devouring the sap. Scale, like the insects mentioned above, emit honeydew, which causes mold on the plant and its stems. These organisms, on the other hand, do not exude honeydew.
Scale prevention and removal: The following procedures can be used to prevent and/or remove scale:
- Remove the plant by handpicking or scraping it off with your fingernail (this works well if the infestation is early or not very heavy).
- Use insecticidal soap, pyrethrins, permethrin, cyfluthrin, imidacloprid, or acetamiprid to wash the plant.
Why does my ivy have bugs?
When planted in the garden, ivy plants are susceptible to ordinary houseplant pests as well as slugs and snails. The slimy pests thrive in the ivy’s foliage because of the damp soil and dark location. Snails and slugs can be hand-picked, or beer traps can be set out to attract and drown the pests.
Do snakes hide in ivy?
Snakes are an unavoidable part of life in Georgia. Snakes are long-time Georgia residents with established roots in Atlanta area communities, as indicated in the book “Snakes of the Southeast” by J. Whitfield “Whit” Gibbons, Professor Emeritus of Ecology at the University of Georgia/SREL, and Mike Dorcas.
“I don’t believe there is a single location in Atlanta that has more snakes than another. It all boils down to the environment “Southeastern Reptile Rescue’s Jason Clark stated.
People should address what attracts snakes to their property, such as food sources and nesting areas, according to Clark.

Ground cover is an appealing alternative to grass for those who want to save money on lawn maintenance while still adding texture and interest to their yard. Snakes, on the other hand, prefer heavy ground cover, such as ivy.
“Of the Atlanta-area houses we’ve been asked to tour, the ones with a lot of ivy or other low-growing ground cover appear to have a good snake population,” Clark said.
Snakes, according to Clark, enjoy hiding. He advises removing “snake shelters” including low bushes, leaf heaps, and ground cover like ivy and monkey grass.
Walter Reeves, the Georgia Gardner, said in response to a reader who asked advise on how to keep snakes out of his yard: “Snakes are best controlled by removing their favorite settings. Snakes may easily find food near a watercourse and hide behind low ground cover such as ivy. You’ll have snakes for the foreseeable future because you have both.”
Do ticks like English ivy?
I finally pulled out all of the English ivy (Hedera helix) in my yard this fall, something I’d been meaning to do for 20 years. Hordes of Asian tiger mosquitoes pushed me into action (they hide in it), but there were other reasons as well, and I thought I’d provide the full list in case others are on the fence about this invasive, destructive, non-native weed. If you’re still not convinced after just a few reasons, scroll down to the bottom for eradication advice (videos, etc.). If you don’t have any ivy but despise it, please read the part on how to help spread the news there are hundreds of millions of English ivy fans, and we only need to reach a small percentage of them.
- Mosquitoes breed in this area. On hot, dry days, this is a great site for mosquitos to prevent desiccation. When you employ a mosquito-control company, they will concentrate on the English ivy. Mammals and birds (seen below) are attracted to dense cover on the ground, houses, and trees, providing blood for local mosquitoes. Ivy can also hide puddles and water-filled debris, providing a breeding ground for mosquito larvae (I found a water-filled Wiffle ball under mine). Please note that any dense ground cover has all of these characteristics, but English ivy appears to be at the top of the list in terms of mosquito attraction (per many mosquito biologists, pesticide companies, etc.).
- Ticks thrive in this environment. Ticks, like mosquitoes, dehydrate quickly in the sun, therefore they prefer to hide in deep vegetation until they detect a mammal. Again, this is true of any vegetation, but English ivy is especially good at hosting ticks because of its thickness. Ticks are also attracted to rodents, who like English ivy.
- Slugs and snails live here. They prefer wet shade, but will inevitably venture into your food garden to perform sluggy things.
- It is a rat haven. It serves as a cover as well as a ladder for climbing up buildings and trees.
- Raccoons are attracted to the area. They like mature (reproductive) sections of trees that are high up in the trees. Raccoons are native and cute, but they make a lot of noise at night. Furthermore, if they are present in your yard, they will attack your trashcans and compost pile. Have faith in me.
- It’s a haven for voles. Voles nibble on the bark of trees under the cover (photos). Voles are too afraid to walk out in the open without the ivy.
- There are snakes in this area. People cleaning English ivy appear to come across snakes on a regular basis, sometimes in large numbers and sometimes dangerous (e.g., copperheads). I like snakes a lot, but if you have pets or children who like to run around in the ivy, you may have a different opinion. Snakes, by the way, are in your ivy to eat the rodents, birds, toads, salamanders, and insects that like to hide in the thickets. Slugs are even eaten by some snakes (don’t judge).
- House sparrows are attracted to it. Passer domesticus, sometimes known as the English sparrow, is a European bird that, like ivy, is invasive. They can endure and enjoy the deadly fruit because they developed alongside the ivy, and they will swarm to the vines in enormous numbers. They will also build their nests on ivy-covered trees and structures. For example, 970 sparrow eggs were found in the ivy adorning the exterior of a church in Providence. House sparrows are aggressive and compete with native birds for food and breeding grounds, displacing them. Other birds have been known to be killed by them. Chickens are most likely infected by house sparrows.
- English starlings are attracted to it. English ivy fruit can also be detoxified by this species. House sparrows are gregarious, noisy, and invasive, but these are far more so (see this pp 246-7 of this book).
Is English ivy good?
English ivy is a perennial plant with some surprising health benefits. It might help to filter the air as a houseplant.
Some research suggests that it may have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties when consumed. It also appears to be effective in decreasing cough associated with colds and viral infections.
However, some people may experience allergic reactions, and nothing is known regarding its safety when taken as a supplement.
Overall, further human study is needed to learn more about the medicinal properties of English ivy.
Does ivy attract termites?
Every now and then, we come across a structure or a home that is practically completely engulfed with ivy. For a long time, these structures have been a familiar sight in many parts of the United States. The phrase “ivy league” actually alludes to the ivy vines that wrap around University buildings in the northeastern United States. English ivy is the name given to this type of ivy. Ivy does not only grow to enormous proportions on buildings in New England, but it is also used to refer to a number of universities noted for their intellectual excellence. English ivy has been designated as resilient and long-lasting as evergreen trees by the United States Department of Agriculture. English ivy can reach a height of 100 feet in any direction, and many other ivy species have similar growth patterns. Although the aesthetics of ivy-covered structures are debatable, ivy may certainly inflict structural and environmental damage. Ivy may easily evade cultivation and overtake other types of flora, killing them in the process. Ivy can also grow in between building gaps and openings, causing structural issues. Many people are aware of the negative repercussions of ivy growth, but many are less aware of the vine’s ability to attract termites to structures.
It’s difficult to imagine a causal link between ivy growth and termite damage to structures and homes. The fact that termites do not eat ivy adds to the skepticism around this association. Ivy vines, on the other hand, can operate as a link between termites on the ground and the wood in a house. It is generally suggested that homeowners leave a twelve-inch gap between ground soil and their home’s wood. This is enough space to keep termites away from the wooden parts of your house. Termites, unfortunately, have little trouble navigating lengthy strands of ivy to reach a source of wood on a home.
Ivy also keeps a lot of water, which helps to keep wooden paneling on the outside of a house moist. This attracts termites even more because they like waterlogged wood and need a lot of water to survive. Ivy vines can also hide termite-caused structural damage to a home or building, in addition to these two issues. To avoid major structural damage, termite damage must be detected early in an infestation. Given this, ivy simply increases the likelihood that a home may become uninhabitable as a result of long-term termite infestations that went unreported behind a thicket of ivy vines.
