Following that, assemble the hose-to-drip-line adapter and firmly insert one end of the 1/2 inch poly tubing into the opening on the side of the adapter that does not have a thread. To ensure that the poly tubing will stay in place, I always try to push it into the hole by about a half-inch.
Note:I warm up the end of the poly tubing (to make it more malleable) with a hair drier or heat gun before inserting it into the hole if it’s freezing outside.
Adding Poly Tubing:
You must first choose the direction in which your 1/2 inch main-line poly tubing will be running. Add a coupling to divide your line into two distinct directions (only if necessary; on my plan, I didn’t need to do this). Every time your main line turns 90 degrees, use your elbows. To add a coupling, first cut the poly tubing where you want it to turn, then firmly put the coupling into place.
Remember to allow extra poly tubing to insert it into the coupling’s hole.
I ran my poly tubing straight up the wall and down the patio’s underside in order to reach my hanging plants. You can see here where I cut the poly tubing’s end.
I’ll attach a 1/2 inch Elbow because I’m only running my line to the left.
In order to run my line along the top of the ceiling, I lastly pushed in the 1/2 inch poly tubing.
Securing Poly Tubing to the Wall:
I then nailed the pick up talons to the wall as necessary to attach the poly tubing to the wall and ceiling.
When you can see in the image below, I strung 1/2-inch main line poly tubing along the patio ceiling, where all of my hanging plants were suspended, and used pick-up talons to anchor it to the wall as necessary.
I cut off the extra tubing after I got as far as I wanted my poly tubing to go.
Adding the 1/4 inch drip tubing:
Next, use the 1/4 inch hole punch to make a hole directly above each hanging plant.
Remember to warm up the tip of the 1/4-inch drip tubing using a blow dryer or heat gun if it’s cold, just like you can with 1/2-inch poly tubing.
Put the other end of the barbed drip coupling into the 1/2 inch main line poly tubing hole that you just made.
To create a solid seal, make sure the barbed drip coupling is fully inserted.
The 1/2 inch main line poly tubing should now hang down from the 1/4 inch drip tubing.
Cut off the extra tubing now, leaving between 1-1/2 and 2 feet hanging. You are now prepared to include the bubblers.
Adding the Bubblers:
Next, wrap one of the chains from which your plant hangs a few times with your 1/4 inch tubing.
Last but not least, attach the free end of your 1/4 inch tubing to the tiny spout protruding from the bubbler’s side.
Adjusting your bubblers:
Spin on your water first, then turn the top of your bubbler clockwise or counterclockwise to change the amount of water that comes out.
A side note: If you don’t use a pot that holds the water, your plants will probably drip from the bottom. If it drips, check that nothing susceptible to water damage is above your pot.
Additionally, I gave it a clean aesthetic by spray painting everything white to match the wood trim and ceiling.
To make drip irrigation for houseplants:
- Make a 1/8-inch-diameter hole in the plastic water bottle’s lid.
- Put water in the bottle.
- The bottle’s lid must be properly screwed on.
- Make a little hole in the houseplant’s soil.
- Place the water bottle in the opening upside down.
