Can hydrangeas be planted beneath a tree?
One of my favorite flowers, hydrangeas really steal the stage. We’ve planted a variety of hydrangea varieties over the years, including Oakleaf, Harmony, Snowflake, Limelight, and macrophylla lacecap and mophead varieties.
If at all feasible, place hydrangeas where they will get morning sun and afternoon shade. Avoid planting hydrangeas directly underneath trees where they will have to compete for water and nutrients, unless the shrubs are planted in a raised bed that rests above the root system of trees. The shrubs thrive in soil that has good drainage and a lot of organic matter. Hydrangeas need a lot of water to bloom.
I first planted our mopheads in a raised space beneath a big oak tree beside the driveway many years ago. At that time, the tree’s canopy extended well above the plants, letting in a lot of light. The region is now mostly shaded as a result of the tree’s growth and canopy spread over time. Although those shrubs produce few blooms, they provide lovely, lush green foliage. On the other side, hydrangeas frequently produce an abundance of flowers when grown in full afternoon shade, but their foliage dries up and burns.
In the backyard’s raised planting area, we added more macrophylla hydrangeas. There are also a few sizable trees in that bed, but because of the ideal sun exposure, they are in full bloom.

I like to plant practically all shrubs and trees in the fall, but hydrangeas can be planted in the early spring if they are cared for properly. Each shrub should have plenty of time to establish itself before the summer’s heat and dryness hit. Plant them early in the morning or late in the day to prevent heat stress whether they are planted in the spring or the fall. Plants should always be regularly watered until they are established.
Dig a planting hole that is at least twice as broad as the root ball and roughly the same depth for planting hydrangeas. The hydrangea should be planted level with the ground or just above it. Feed the plants with a slow-release fertilizer made for blooming shrubs, following the label’s instructions. At least three times per week, deeply moisten the skin. In order to keep the soil cool and moist and to stop weeds from growing, cover the planting area with an organic mulch layer.
Does cedar prevent plants from growing?
QUESTION: Due to the high winds in December of last year, we lost a number of the cedar trees in our yard. There is no proof in the literature that leachate or the volatile substances emitted by cedar leaf are poisonous to plants. However, it is generally known that cedars, particularly Thuja species, have created chemical weapons to combat various pests and infections. Researchers have discovered that the heartwood of our native Western red cedar, Thuja plicata, contains thujaplicin, a water-soluble tropolone with anti-tumor potential in addition to its ability to inhibit a variety of bacteria and fungi. The fact that cedar wood resists rot is probably due to this anti-microbial activity. However, there is no proof that this chemical damages the tissues of plants.
Thujone is another chemical weapon in Cedar’s arsenal. Both Thuja leaf and other non-Thuja species contain this essential oil. Thujone and other foliar terpenes are most recognized for their capacity to repel clothing moths, but they can also deter, impede, or even kill Argentine ants, cockroaches, termites, carpet beetles, and odorous house ants. These substances do not readily dissolve in water, but instead volatilize and disperse into the air. The substance’s insolubility aids non preventing leaching into aquatic environments.
In conclusion, despite what you may read and hear, there is no proof from science that woodchip or sawdust mulches can stunt plant growth.
Anytime significant amounts of sawdust are incorporated into the soil, additional nitrogen must be provided as well. These nitrogen concentrations are quite high. If fertilizer is to be applied around or beneath specific trees, shrubs, or plants, less could be utilized. When using a lot of wood mulch, it is usually a good idea to keep a constant eye on plant development. Small, light-green or yellowish leaves on slow-growing plants typically indicate a higher nitrogen requirement.
The weeds in our garden appear to be growing better than ever despite the corn meal gluten we recently used to prevent them. What is happening?
The ability of corn meal gluten to act as a pre-emergent herbicide in backyard gardens is widely known. It is a by-product of the wet milling procedure and is used in fish, dog, and livestock feed. It has corn protein, which makes up 60% of its weight and 10% of its nitrogen. However, the reviews on its efficacy have been unsatisfactory, particularly in this coastal region where it frequently rains. We must examine how maize meal gluten functions in order to fully comprehend why it doesn’t always effectively control weeds. Weeds are controlled by corn meal gluten, which prevents the production of roots during seed germination. The pesticide must be used before the weed seeds begin to sprout. Corn meal gluten will not be able to suppress any weed that has sprouted roots.
During the germination period, if the soil surface is still moist, the injured plants may recover and continue roots. For weed seedlings to die during the crucial phase when no root system has yet formed, a brief drying interval is required. In other words, moisture dilutes the gluten in maize meal to the point where it no longer prevents the formation and growth of roots. Weeds that are just starting to germinate benefit from fertilizer because corn meal gluten contains 10% nitrogen. Given how frequently it has rained this spring, it is understandable that your weeds appear to be flourishing more than ever.
