About Zinnias
Since zinnias are annuals, they will only produce blooms and seeds for one season before dying. The original plant will not reappear the following year. Types of Zinnias
Zinnia elegans, the most widely grown zinnia species, has been developed to produce a large number of distinctive variants.
Single, semidouble, or double zinnia blooms are the three most common varieties. The number of petal rows and whether or not the flower’s center is visible serve to distinguish between these forms:
- A single row of petals and the center are both visible on single-flowered zinnias.
- Petal rows abound on double-flowered zinnias, and their centers are hidden.
- Between the two are semidouble-flowered zinnias, which have several rows of petals but discernible cores.
In addition to these shapes, zinnia flowers also occur in “beehive,” “button,” and “cactus” forms. Additionally, the plants themselves come in various heights: taller types function best as a garden bed’s background, while shorter varieties are useful as a border. When to Plant Zinnias

How to Plant Zinnias
- Depending on the kind, place plants 4 to 24 inches apart. (Many common kinds are planted 2 feet between rows and 6 inches apart within the row.) For information about each variety, consult the seed packet’s back.
- Plant zinnia seeds no deeper than 1/4 inch.
- The majority of zinnia cultivars will produce seedlings in just 4 to 7 days, but it may take up to two months or more for blooms to appear (depending on planting site and climate).
- To promote air circulation, thin seedlings when they are three inches tall, spacing them 6 to 18 inches apart. As a result, powdery mildew is less likely to grow.
- To promote development and blossoms, keep the soil’s moisture level moderate and apply a mild fertilizer.
- Deadhead zinnias once they have finished blooming to facilitate the development of new blossoms.
- Since zinnias are annuals, they will perish with the first fall hard cold. Let the final blooms of the season fully mature before dispersing their seeds if you want them to reseed.

How can you prevent frost damage to zinnias?
Harvest leafy greens and soft veggies. Peppers and mature (shiny) green tomatoes will keep ripening indoors.
Just before dark, use flipped buckets, flower pots, gallon milk cartons with the tops cut off (inverted), burlap, or an old sheet to cover frost-sensitive plants that must stay outside. Heat is absorbed throughout the day and released at night in clear gallon, half-gallon, or three-liter beverage containers that have been filled with water and some dark food coloring. Use to encircle sensitive plants behind frost covers and to protect them from the elements.
If you have space inside, you can wash off the foliage and containers of fragile annuals in pots, window boxes, and hanging planters to enjoy them longer inside, but don’t expect all of them to adapt well to indoor circumstances from outside ones. Keep them away from your houseplants in a cool area in case they contain bugs that were not easily seen outside.
Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, several late-season radishes, and greens including arugula, chard, collard, endive, kale, scallions, and spinach are among the vegetables that thrive in light frosts. Mulching these plants with a lot of dark-colored material will help them retain heat and prevent the ground from freezing for a while.
The greatest time to harvest root crops like beets, carrots, parsnips, and turnips is after a few light frosts, but you may still harvest your crops throughout the winter if you cover them with mulch that is deep enough to prevent the soil from freezing solid (where mice are not likely to move in). Garlic and shallots are not a problem; they can easily overwinter in most climates without protection.
Other plants, such as perennials with strong roots, may lose their foliage during a frost or cold, but they will reappear the following spring.

How much cold can zinnias withstand?
Warm-season annuals, such as zinnias, should only be planted outside after your region’s final date of frost. The plants, which are normally summer or early fall bloomers, can occasionally withstand temperatures in the 40 to 50 F range at night. If nighttime temperatures drop between 32 and 45 degrees Fahrenheit, it is essential to cover newly planted specimens with plastic or fleece to preserve their survival. Know Your Frost Dates
Priorities first! Always keep in mind the first and latest frost dates that often occur in your area.
The first day of the year that a frost occurs is regarded as the first frost date as the fall weather begins to cool. The first freeze date of the year will come as the weather cools further, typically a week or two later (this is what kills most annual plants). The first freeze day and first frost date in Missoula are both in the middle of October.

Will zinnias die with a mild frost?

Take it up
Moving plants away from potential danger is the simplest cold-protection strategy. Potted plants and seedlings in flats both benefit from this. Moving plants onto a porch with a roof, into a garage or shed, or under a deck frequently provides sufficient shelter.
Rely on Water
Just before sunset, water the soil to raise the temperature of the surrounding air overnight as the water evaporates. Water-filled buckets or gallon jugs should be left in the sun all day. Move them close to threatened plants at night. Air temperatures will be moderated by the water, and if it freezes, heat will be released. Plants Should Be CoveredPlants should be covered with sheets, towels, blankets, cardboard, or a tarp to protect them from everything but the harshest freezing (28F for five hours). Inverting baskets, coolers, or any other container with a firm bottom over plants is also an option. Before it gets dark, cover plants to keep warm air in. Coverings shouldn’t ideally contact the foliage. If windy conditions are anticipated, anchor cloth coverings.
When the temperature rises and the frost has melted in the morning, remove coverings. Under dense covers, heat from the sun can accumulate and cause plant death.
Blankets that collapse
Row covers, or gardening blankets, should always be accessible. These covers are created in various thicknesses from plastic or synthetic fibers. Lay row covers directly on the plants, or suspend them over a bed with pegs to form a tunnel.
Activate lights
An incandescent light bulb produces enough heat to raise the temperature of the air around it just enough to keep a plant from freezing. For this method to operate, bulbs must be close to plants (within a distance of 2-3 feet). (Fluorescent bulbs can’t produce enough heat to complete this task.)
Defend specific plants
Set up hot caps
At planting time, stiff plastic containers with venting holes are placed over the individual seedlings. Hot caps function similarly to cloches (small greenhouses), but the daily task of applying and removing the covering is eliminated by venting holes. Use plastic two-liter bottles or gallon jugs with the bottoms cut off and the lids removed to simulate a hot cap (but saved). In the evenings when the weather turns chilly, replace the lids.
A Wall O’Water tepee, which encircles individual plants with a sleeve of water-filled tubes, is a variation on the hot cap concept. During the day, the water absorbs the heat of the sun. The water gently freezes at night, releasing the sun’s stored radiant heat and preventing the air within the tepee from becoming frosty.
