Why Do My Zinnias Have Brown Spots

Bacterial Leaf Spot: The causal agent of bacterial leaf spot in zinnias is Xanthomonas campestris pv. zinniae, and the signs of infection are purplish spots that often remain tiny but take on an angular shape. Spots might start to halo in yellow. Following times of leaf wetness, spray plants once a week with a copper fungicide to lower the likelihood of disease because copper fungicides are also effective against many bacterial infections. On flowers, little brown spots can grow until they cover the entire petal. There may be heavy spotting, and the petals may turn dark and wither. It is also possible for seedlings to damp off. Symptoms of this condition and those of bacterial leaf spot are extremely similar.

  • Start with seed free of pathogens. The germination rate of seeds can be decreased by soaking them in hot water at 125F for 20 minutes. Additionally, seeds can be treated for 30 minutes with 1 percent to 2.5 percent lactic acid or for 20 minutes with 12 percent peroxide.
  • Use resilient species or cultivars, like Z. angustifolia.

How frequently should you water zinnias?
