Why Are My Hydrangea Leaves Turning Brown

  • Drought, excessive wind, and too much sun can cause the leaves and blooms of hydrangeas to turn brown. The best conditions for hydrangea growth are protection from wind, wet soil, and dappled sunlight. The hydrangea blooms and leaves wilt and become brown because there is insufficient moisture around the roots.
  • When hydrangeas are planted in small pots, the leaves and blossoms become brown because the roots can’t properly absorb moisture from the soil in the smaller pots. Because of their large root systems, hydrangeas need constant watering to keep their leaves and petals from turning brown.
  • The hydrangea’s leaf edges get brown and crispy when fertilizer is applied excessively or too frequently. Applying a delayed release fertilizer at the beginning of spring will help prevent the bronzing of the leaf margins since hydrangea roots are extremely sensitive to excess fertilizer.
  • The flower buds and newly developing foliage development of hydrangeas can become dark and mushy in the Spring due to a late frost. The young growth is delicate and more susceptible to damage from frost. Cut back any hydrangea flower buds that are brown and mushy because they won’t bloom.
  • Hydrangea leaf spot fungus, which results in brown patches on the leaves, is typically brought on by overwatering. A hydrangea with dark spots and fewer flowers has too much moisture on its leaves, which encourages the growth of a fungus.

How do you handle hydrangea leaves that have turned brown?

Whether the hydrangea is in a pot or the ground, thoroughly rinse the soil with water. Most of the salts in the soil should be eliminated as a result. Once the soil is just beginning to dry out on the surface, wait a day or two before watering the hydrangea again. After that, water the plant normally. Make sure the water drains out the bottom of the container where the hydrangea is being cultivated if necessary. This will ensure that the salts are regularly washed out (this applies to houseplants, too). After root-burn, wait until the plant looks healthy and shows signs of having a strong root system before fertilizing it again.

Why do the leaves on my hydrangeas appear burnt?

There are numerous varieties of hydrangeas, thus the reason they are browning and the solution aren’t always the same for all plants. Here are some explanations for why different hydrangeas soon turn brown, along with some images of typical (sad!) dried blossoms.

1. Heat from the midday to late afternoon sun is the main cause of the browning of mophead hydrangea flowers like Endless Summer and Nikko Blue. Mophead cultivars will quickly turn brown if they are planted in full sun or an area where they receive intense sunlight at noon. However, the flowers on those plants will continue to bloom into the fall if they are situated where the early morning, late afternoon, and evening sun shines directly on them.

2. If planted in full or midday sun, lacecap hydrangeas also turn brown very rapidly. In general, lacecaps tend to fade more quickly than other hydrangea varieties, even if certain cultivars, like Twist n’ Shout, produce fresh blossoms later in the fall. So put these in morning or evening sun and take use of them while they are still around.

3. White blossoming The hydrangea paniculata kinds develop and maintain their beauty the best in direct sunlight. Variety names like “Grandiflora,” “Limelight,” and “Pinky Winky” will turn pink as they get older, but as long as they receive adequate water during hot weather, the flowers won’t brown out.

4. If hydrangeas wilt excessively in warmer weather, they will all turn brown. In the summer heat, water these shrubs deeply every few days (hand watering is insufficiently deep); also, mulch the area surrounding plants to help soil retain moisture longer.

5. Even though daily watering of hydrangeas can prevent browning, it can still happen. When watering, try to avoid getting the leaves and flowers wet since this encourages the growth of the fungus known as leaf-spot, which will turn the leaves and flowers brown.

What to do if the blossoms on your hydrangeas are brown? Take off those toasted blossoms. Where to cut can be seen in the image below. The appearance of the plant is improved, and for reblooming kinds, it helps to encourage the development of new blooms.

Brown mophead flowers are a sign that the plant is receiving too much sunlight or that the flowers have repeatedly withered due to inadequate watering.

Even under shade, too much sun can turn lacecaps brown, and they may not live as long as other types of flowers.

The paniculata kinds of hydrangea thrive in direct sunlight, although they can turn brown if left dry between waterings or if they receive daily irrigation. In hot weather, newly planted H. paniculata may require watering every three to four days, but mature plants can go longer. Less frequently, deep water.

Why are the edges of my hydrangea leaves brown?

Typically, underwatering, sunburn, or overwatering are the causes of browning leaves.

The soil possibly grew too dry for an extended period of time between waterings if the leaf tips are turning brown and hard. The plant may lose leaves as a result of this. This does not necessarily imply that you are regularly underwatering because the browning may have only occurred once. If you see brown stains in the middle of the leaves, it may be because the leaves are receiving too much direct sunshine. Some plants are readily burned by direct sunlight and are sensitive to it. If this is the case, try shifting your plant to a spot where it won’t be exposed to the sun’s glare.

– If you move your plants from indoors to outdoors in the summer without acclimating them to direct sunshine, this is usually what happens.

What does scorched hydrangea leaf look like?

Hydrangea leaf scorch is a typical physiological issue. Yellowing leaves or erratic, dry, brown spots are typical symptoms. Browning of the leaf margins and tips is also possible. Leaves with severe damage may fall off the plant.

We’ve experienced our fair share of brown, decaying leaves as we’ve learned how to properly care for various home plants over the years. We weren’t sure at first whether to take them out or leave them. Here is what we’ve discovered works the best.

Do you need to remove the dead leaves? Yes. Your indoor plants should have brown and withering leaves removed as quickly as possible, but only if they are more than 50% damaged. By removing these leaves, the plant looks better and the healthy foliage that is left can receive more nutrients.

Even though it might appear straightforward, there’s more to it than merely cutting those leaves off. To keep your plant healthy, you must assess how much of the leaf is dying and then carefully remove the damaged areas.

How is leaf scorch treated?

  • Leaf scorch might look as burnt areas or spots on the leaf’s edge.
  • The most prevalent cause of leaf scorch is improper irrigation.
  • Leaf spots and marginal burning can be caused by using too much fertilizer.
  • Burned tree leaves may fall off too soon.

Many trees, shrubs, flowers, and vegetables grow dry, brown leaf edges during the hot summer days. Leaf spots could also be caused by damage to the tissue in the main veins. In extreme circumstances, entire leaves will die after turning brown or black. Although many other types of trees may also be affected by the illness, some trees, like aspens, are particularly prone to it. Additionally, evergreens can experience leaf scorch, which causes the needle tips to develop a pale brown or pinkish color. If the problem continues, the needles may lose their shape and turn brown or develop brown bands.

Both of these disorders, known as leaf scorch, are brought on by a tree or shrub’s inability to absorb enough water to meet its requirements during the arid summer months. A plant’s fine feeder roots absorb water, which is then carried to the leaves by the vascular system. The leaf tissue farthest from the major veins will begin to dry out quickest if it cannot absorb enough water. Because of this, leaf margins burn first (Figure 1).

Insufficient Roots. Usually, the issue is that the plant’s root system is insufficient to suit its needs. This could be brought on by a variety of factors, including: 1.) poor root growth due to pavement restrictions, as seen with the maple tree in Figure 2; 2.) root loss from tilling or construction; 3.) the application of a soil sterilant nearby; 4.) drought stress; 5.) a loss of roots due to dehydration during a dry winter and spring; 6.) excessive irrigation or fertilizer application; and 7.) an injury or infection on the trunk or branches severe enough to impair movement.

  • Too much moisture. A plant cannot develop new, water-absorbing roots without oxygen when it is overwatered. Therefore, root development is prevented by wet soils, and scorch will follow. Leaf scorch will almost certainly develop if there is insufficient soil moisture in the winter and spring and excessive summer watering.
  • Overuse of fertilizer By “burning” the roots, fertilizer overuse can result in leaf scorch. Leaf spots or marginal leaf burns could be the visible signs of this damage. Depending on how much of the root system is harmed by fertilizer, the damage may appear on a single area of the plant, a single branch of a tree or shrub, or the entire plant. Because fertilizers contain salts, soils with salt concentrations higher than the plant will also result in leaf scorch. Fertilizer spikes, which distribute concentrated salts at precise locations, can cause leaf scorch and burn roots.

Related Stress Symptoms

Depending on how severe the stress is, heat stress can have a variety of effects, from wilt to discolored leaves to severe desiccation and cell death. Heat stress causes plants to shut down essential growth processes and make it difficult for them to get enough water up into their leaves. As a result, this kind of stress is thought to be connected to drought stress. Young plants may collapse due to damage from heat injury near the soil line. Plants that are surrounded by rock mulch or that are on the south or west sides of fences or buildings may experience the impacts of concentrated, reflected heat. Black plastic mulch has the potential to raise the soil’s temperature above what plants can tolerate, which can stop growth processes and severely harm roots, leading to leaf scorch.

The falling of leaves or twigs in response to stress is known as cladoptosis (or Kladoptosis). At the base of leaves or twigs, a separation layer forms when ethylene gas is activated by drought or other stressors. In order to protect the life of the entire plant, the plant uses tissue shedding as a defensive mechanism. Before falling, the leaves may become yellow, simulating the autumnal season. Under stress, many deciduous species will lose their leaves, but aspens, cottonwoods, and willows are the ones most frequently affected. Leaves might fall off due to overwatering, underwatering, extreme heat, or root injury. Premature leaf drop can also be brought on by girdling roots, which frequently arise from inadequate planting depth.

Prevention

There is no remedy for leaf scorch once it has occurred. Although the dried leaf parts won’t grow back green, with correct water management, the plant may recover.

The first step in preventing sunburn is to water in the winter. When there is no snow cover, give the roots a good soak once a month to help avoid root die-back from dehydration. Mature trees have roots that reach out several times their height, and this entire region requires water. In order for the water to seep in before the evening freeze, watering in the winter requires picking a day when the air temperature is above freezing. Surface water that freezes will suffocate the roots and exacerbate the issue.

Water plants during the growing season sparingly and deeply. When trees are present in or close to lawns, this can be challenging, but a deep and sparing watering schedule will help your lawn as well by promoting the growth of deep roots. Although they can cohabit, trees normally require less regular irrigation than lawns do. Keep in mind that roots require oxygen, therefore the soil has to have some time to dry out in between waterings.

Last but not least, if scorch develops, resist the impulse to keep adding water. Just adhere to the intense and irregular schedule. In some years, some burn is possible if the weather is really hot and windy. Avoid panicking and overwatering your trees, which would be cruel.
