Why Are My Hellebore Drooping

Hellebores are evergreen members of the buttercup family and are also referred to as the Christmas or Lenten rose. These plants are hardy in Zones 4 to 9, flowering in late winter or early spring. Hellebore’s natural habitat includes Greece, Turkey, and Russia. The range of flower colors has expanded thanks to hybridization and now includes white, green, pink, maroon, and spotted flowers. Most types are easy to reseed. As the plants reproduce themselves, new color blooms will arise because the plants are already hybrids.

Hellebore plants grow to a height of 1 1/2 to 2 feet, and because of this, the flowers are close to the ground and droop at an angle of 45 degrees for a prolonged bloom cycle. As a defense against rain, sleet, and snow, flowers droop. Insect pollination is not favored during the winter and early spring weather conditions. The few plants that are in bloom are taken advantage of by certain early bees or flower flies. Once the blooms have been pollinated, the plant will create seed pods. As the weather warms, the seed pods will expand quickly and burst open, scattering hefty black seeds all over the ground. Undeveloped embryos found in these seeds develop in the warm, damp leaf litter found beneath the parent plant. The seeds will begin to sprout as the temperature drops, usually in late December or early January. The first flowers will start to bloom two to four years later.

Evergreen perennials known as hellebores favor light to heavy shade. The lovely foliage has broad, glossy, dark green leaves. Hellebores should be planted in organically rich, well-drained soil. Filtered light is preferred by plants. They will receive shade throughout the sweltering summer months if planted behind deciduous shade trees that receive some early sun. Hellebores are heavy feeders, and the spring and summer are when they require the most nutrition. The plants will bloom fully if timed-release fertilizers are applied in the spring and late summer.

The majority of species flower between December and April and remain in bloom for a month or more. Mass plantings are appropriate since the foliage continues to be lovely into the summer. For woodland gardens, these plants are perfect. The ideal soil is rich and wet. There aren’t many insect or disease issues with hellebores. Although they can be annoying, aphids are not a serious issue. Botrytis is a widespread grey mold fungus that can be readily controlled by adequate spacing. Poor air circulation and moist circumstances can cause outbreaks. Hellebores are exceptionally drought and cold resistant once they are established.

Cut the flower flowers with about an inch of stalk remaining, and then float them in a shallow dish of water to enjoy them. They can persist for weeks before gradually changing to entirely other hues.

Hellebore varieties include:

The sturdy Corsican Hellebore, H. argutifolius, grows 2-3′ tall and wide, either upright or spreading, with blue-green, finely split leaves and pale green cup-shaped blooms. From winter through spring, clusters of two light green flowers are carried by leafy stems. The best varieties are “Pacific Frost” or “Janet Starnes.”

Christmas rose, or H. niger, is a common plant in cottage gardens. From Christmas until spring, this lovely plant, which is 1′ tall and wide, is in bloom. Seven to nine lobes make up the dark green leaves. With time, white clusters of delicate blossoms take on a reddish hue. There are currently new double pink hybrids on the market. Compared to other hellebores, these plants require greater shade. Of all the species, this one is probably the most tolerant of cold. The most popular strain is “Potter’s Wheel,” a particularly large flowering strain with up to five blossoms per plant.

The most well-known hellebore, H. orientalis (Lenten Rose), grows in clumps that are 2 to 3 feet tall and broad. Basal leaves lack apparent stems and feature 5–11 highly serrated leaves. In late winter to early April, it blooms. Flowers are 2-4 wide and come in a variety of hues, including cream, pink, green, and purple. Depending on the hybrid, many flowers have deep purple spots on them. This plant quickly self-sows and can be transplanted.

How can hellebores be kept from drooping?

Have six years passed since I published my first blog entry on how to gather hellebores? Time flies. In order to ensure that everyone is getting the most out of their priceless hellebores, I thought it would be a good idea to dust off an old tutorial as the Northeastern region is about to enter another harvest season for hellebores. They truly make spring bouquets such a delight to have!

How to Harvest Hellebores

Around 2012, hellebores rose to popularity in floral design, and they have remained so ever since, especially among farmer florists who are looking for a robust bloom for their early-spring creative work. We’re all still in need of some color in our life, and hellebores are one of the first flowers to blossom each spring, frequently even before the snow has melted. Their delectable hues and patterns contrast nicely with their endearing nodding heads. Oh, how enticing it is to cut and place in a vase! But it pays to wait and avoid cutting these gorgeous garden flowers too soon!

Back in 2004, when I moved into my first house in Philadelphia, I first fell in love with hellebores as a decorative plant for my small shade garden. But soon I was cutting them to bring inside for enjoyment. Who wants to adorn them outside in the chilly weather, after all? In 2019, my collection of hellebore plants has grown to well over 200 plants (and counting!) and likely includes nearly as many types.

I’ll let you in on a little secret before you ask me which varieties are ideal for cutting: buy your hellebore plants in the spring while they are actively blooming in their containers at the nursery so you can see how long the flower stems are and if their heads face up or down. Even a designated cultivar of hellebore, which is infamous for crossbreeding, may exhibit various characteristics from plant to plant. Therefore, I believe it is better to consider your purchase before making these overpriced pretties. If I had to pick just one kind, I’d say the Brandywine series, as I actually have quite a few of those plants.

Currently, as a flower grower, I usually get inquiries on how to create hellebores “final in the vase They are used by so many designers, but they all quickly fail. There are some techniques available for “post-harvest remedies that could aid in preventing wilting. Others employ a chemical rapid hydrating solution, others shove a pin up the stem, and still others immerse them in boiling water. Some folks also combine all three. According to my observations, there is just one surefire method to obtain long-lasting hellebores.

Harvest hellebores when they are mature.

I’m done now. It’s that easy. When harvested at their mature stage, hellebores won’t wilt.

The prominent petals of a hellebore “bloom” are actually something called sepals rather than true petals. They protect the flower portion, which is located in the center of the showy sepals and consists of a group of delicately textured stamens and a few tiny, inconsequential petals (in the photo above, the ruffled green at the center are the petals). The stamens and petals fall off after fertilization, and a seed pod begins to develop in the center of the sepals.

Using hellebores that already have their seed pods produced is the best way to ensure that they last in floral arrangements. The hellebore will be more robust the more developed the seed pod is. This is because the sepals resist withering by becoming stiff and waxy as the seed pod grows. A mature hellebore can actually survive beautifully for a day or longer without water. They work well for hair flowers and boutonnieres.

Can you tell which hellebore is almost ready for harvest and which one isn’t?

Another tip I’ve picked up over the years is to use a sharp knife to cut my hellebore stems rather than scissors or snips. In contrast to snips, the knife creates a clean cut that does not crush the cells in the delicate hellebore stem. To assist open up additional water-absorbing tissue, I’ll also cut an inch-long split up the middle of a stem if the bottom of the stem is very thick. If the seed pods are fully grown, this step is not necessary, but occasionally, when I’m pressed for time to gather some blooms that are a little on the immature side for a specific wedding or event, I’ll go the extra mile, just to be safe.

Why did my hellebores fail?

Microsphaeropsis hellebori is the fungus that causes black spot, often known as leaf spot. Though considerably more prevalent than the black death, it can be just as catastrophic if left unchecked.

Your hellebores most likely have this fungus illness if their leaves have dark brown or black blotches on them.

The pattern of the lesions allows you to differentiate between black spot and black death. Lesions brought on by black spot are spherical, whilst those brought on by black death are often striped and blotchy.

Infected leaves become covered as the disease spreads, and the dead parts may eventually die off and fall out, leaving holes in the foliage. If it gets near the stem, the plant can fall over unexpectedly.

The stems’ bases may also be attacked by the fungus, which would make them rot before flowering.

Conditions that are warm and moist make this fungus worse. The spores can spread across your garden by wind and rain, causing your hellebores to die completely. While H. niger is extremely vulnerable, H. argutifolius (Corsican hellebore) is less likely to contract the disease.

The illness must be stopped from spreading, else it will continue unchecked. Any infected foliage should be removed and destroyed as soon as possible; do not add it to your compost pile as the fungus will continue to generate spores and spread.

Additionally, remove any leaves and other plant materials from the ground that may be polluted.

Sterilize your gardening equipment once you’ve removed diseased plants. You can clean your shears with bleach or 70% alcohol.

By trimming the leaves in the autumn and removing any damaged stems or foliage, you can aid in the prevention of this infection. Make it a habit to regularly remove any debris from around the plants because it can act as an infection reservoir.

The alternative is fungicides. None have been created expressly to combat black spot, however the majority of fungicides will act on a variety of fungal illnesses.

Additionally, myclobutanil works well against a number of fungi-related illnesses, including black spot.

It can be purchased as Captan from Bonide. You must dilute this powder product in accordance with the directions on the packaging and reapply as necessary every 10 to 14 days.
