Do your geranium plants have white-colored leaves? This is most likely caused by a condition known as powdery mildew.
On the upper surface of the leaves and stems, a powdery gray to white covering can be noticed. The condition worsens, causing the leaves to become yellow and drop off.
Dealing with Powdery Mildew in Geranium plants
- If you can, grow kinds that are resistant to disease.
- Cut off diseased leaves and gently dispose of dead leaves.
- 60 percent water and 40 percent milk are combined. This concoction effectively stops the spread of Powdery Mildew. For optimal results, spray twice a month.
- To effectively fight the illness, use fungicides with sulfur or copper as active ingredients.
When the leaves are white, what does that mean?
Along the trails of western Pennsylvania in July and August, I discovered something I had never seen before: sporadic occurrences of leaves turning white.
The stems and tips of the leaves, which had previously been green, are now white. The below-ground plant had developed to the point where some of the stems were entirely white.
Chlorosis, as the ailment is known, refers to the plant’s inability to produce enough chlorophyll to appear green. Chlorophyll is a symptom of plant distress because it depends on sunshine to provide sustenance for the plant. Yet why?
Chlorosis has numerous causes. The list from Wikipedia is provided below with my [notes]:
- an absence of a certain mineral, such as iron, magnesium, or zinc, in the soil
- lack of proteins or nitrogen
- a soil pH at which roots are unable to absorb some minerals
- bad drainage (waterlogged roots) [In this instance, unlikely.]
- Compacted or damaged roots [Not likely in this situation.]
- Occasionally, herbicides and pesticides, in particular those that target weeds, might also produce chlorosis in the crop being treated. [Not likely in this instance given the geography.]
- sulphur dioxide exposure [Possible in Pittsburgh, but unlikely in this circumstance.]
- Ozone harm to vulnerable plants [In this instance, unlikely.]
- any number of bacterial diseases, such as Pseudomonas syringae pv. tagetis, which completely chlorinates Asteraceae.
It’s interesting to note that the plants I took pictures of are members of the Asteraceae family, and one of them is completely chlorotic.
Was the 2017 growth season particularly unfavorable for the aforementioned bacteria? Or does chlorosis occur annually and I’ve just been blind to it?

How can I prevent the white-turning of my leaves?
If the lead is older, wash the oxidization from it and the damaged tiles using diluted dishwashing solutions and a gentle brush. Rinse, and once the lead has dried, treat it with patination oil. Is it possible to rescue overwatered geraniums?
Any type of plant, even geraniums, can develop stem and root rot as a result of overwatering. When geraniums develop rot, which shows up as black, withered stems and roots, they can occasionally be rescued. The plant may not be recoverable if discovered too late, but if it is more green than black, it has a good chance of doing so. Regularly inspect your geraniums; if you notice any dark leaves, this may be a sign of stem rot or another fungal issue.
Remove the dead sections of the geranium plant from the ground or pot, cure the stem or root rot, and then let the soil rest and air dry until it is just a little damp. Remove the soil from the geranium’s root ball with a brush, and then throw it away. Get a new container with drainage holes because it is ideal to let the plant recover in a fresh environment. For a geranium plant to be healthy, proper drainage is crucial.
Dust the roots of the geranium with a quality fungicidal powder before replanting. Replant it in the new pot with fresh potting soil that drains nicely after that. At first, keep your healing geranium in a shaded spot and water it only when the soil seems dry. Move it into the sun or replant it in your garden as it begins to produce leaves once more.
Can sunburned plants recover?
Plant sunscald damage is simple to avoid, but there is no treatment available. Once a leaf is broken, there is nothing you can do but nurture the plant until new, stronger leaves can be produced. In order to encourage the growth of sun-resistant leaves and guard against plant sunburn damage, slower acclimatization to harsh sun, also known as hardening off, is essential.
Use a sunshade to limit the UV exposure for plants that are already ill. As they get more resilient, gradually increase the amount of time they spend each day without the sunshade. Your plant should be prepared for the sun after roughly two weeks of this approach. As plants struggle to recuperate, be sure to properly water and feed them with sunscald; they’ll need all the help they can get.
Does powdery mildew naturally disappear?
Due to their close bond with plants, the fungi that produce powdery mildew are uncommon in that they require their hosts to be alive.
It is believed that this is the cause of their not killing their host. To survive, they require the plant’s nutrients.
Additionally, they produce more severe disease in warm, dry weather, in contrast to the majority of fungi.
A minor condition could resolve on its own. But without the gardener’s involvement and a little more TLC, a serious illness might be the end for your prized plants.
What Is Powdery Mildew?
The illness brought on by hundreds of species of fungi belonging to the order Erysiphales is known as powdery mildew.
This name refers to the talcum-like powder that you may see on the leaves of diseased plants, which ranges in color from white to grayish. This powder is made up of mycelia and spores (fungal threads).
In the early 2000s, new DNA sequence data led to a significant revision of the taxonomy of fungi in this order, therefore it’s possible to come across both the current and the historical names for the fungi known to cause a certain plant’s illness.
These infections replicate sexually and asexually, like many fungi do. There are several scientific names for each of these stages because they all have rather diverse appearances from one another.
While fruiting bodies from the sexual stage are crucial for overwintering, spores from the asexual stage propagate the disease. Previously known as cleistothecia, these fruiting bodies are now known as chasmothecia.
Podosphaera, which affects roses, and Golovinomyces, which harms cucurbits, are two examples of common varieties. Wherever cucurbits are cultivated, powdery mildew is frequent, hence vertical planting is frequently advised to increase airflow.
How These Fungi Attack Their Host
The majority of fungal species produce fungal threads that develop on the surface of leaves, but these particular fungi produce structures that dwell inside plant cells and suck resources from those cells. Haustoria are the name for these root-like structures.
The majority of powdery mildews are particular to their hosts as a result of this specialized connection. Like many other infections that harm a wide range of species, these fungus won’t target any plants in the region (Anthracnose and white mold come to mind).
In other words, just because the adjacent field of barley has visible evidence of powdery mildew, doesn’t always mean your roses will, too. On the other hand, the same species of fungi may infect both zucchini and cucumbers.
What appearance do overwatered geraniums have?
Having too much moisture or overwatering is one of the most frequent reasons of yellowing leaves. Geraniums typically have yellow leaves at the bottom when they are overwatered. They could also get water patches that appear pale. If so, you should cease watering right away so that the plants can dry off. Remember that geraniums do not like excessive amounts of water and are drought-tolerant plants.
Geranium yellow leaves can also occur when the water or air are too cold. Since geraniums prefer warm climates, they struggle in cool climates. Geraniums with yellow leaves can be caused by prolonged cold weather, particularly cold, wet weather, or by cold snaps in the spring.
Additionally, a nutrient deficit could be the reason why the geranium leaves turn more yellow than green. Every third watering or once a month, geranium plants should be treated with a comprehensive, water-soluble fertilizer (ideally one with micronutrients). Geraniums’ yellow leaves can be avoided using fertilizer, and the plant will grow larger and produce more blooms as a result.
A geranium with yellow leaves sporadically indicates the presence of a disease. Verticillium, for instance, is a fungus that can result in stunted growth, withering, and brilliant yellow leaves.
What about the yellow-edged geranium leaves? Dehydration or a lack of water are frequently blamed for geranium leaves that have yellow margins or yellow tips. Geraniums require some water even though they can withstand drought. In these situations, you can use your fingers to feel the soil to gauge how dry the plants may be and water accordingly. Trimming the yellowing growth off might also be beneficial.
You can see that geraniums with yellow leaves often only require a little tender loving care in order to recover. If you provide a geranium with what it need, the leaves won’t turn yellow.
How are geranium leaves kept green?
The plants might not be getting enough nutrients. One or two times per month, apply a 20-20-20. Before adding water, sprinkle some Epsom salt around each pot. This may facilitate the plants’ uptake of nitrogen and promote the growth of chlorophyll.

It does not spread as quickly in cooler, wetter locations, and it is also hindered by temperatures above 90F. (32C). Additionally, plants in shaded places are typically more impacted than those in broad sunlight.
How to Identify Powdery Mildew
- Plants with powdery mildew infection resemble they have been flour-dusted.
- On leaves, stems, and even on fruit, powdery mildew normally begins as round, powdery white patches.
- The upper portion of the leaves are typically covered in powdery mildew, although it can also develop on the undersides.
- The most vulnerable foliage is the young foliage. The leaves dry out and turn yellow.
- Some leaves may twist, shatter, or become deformed as a result of the fungus.
- The majority of the leaves or other damaged parts will be covered with the white patches caused by powdery mildew.
- The growing tips, buds, and leaves will also develop defects. Typically, these signs show up at the end of the growth season.

How to Prevent Powdery Mildew
The best method of eradicating powdery mildew, as with many other diseases and pests, is proactive prevention.
- For your garden, pick plants that can withstand powdery mildew. Cucurbits (melons, cucumbers, squash, etc.) have many mildew-resistant varieties that are available from major seed providers.
- Plant where there is more sunlight because powdery mildew tends to grow more frequently in shaded regions.
- To improve air circulation around your plants and lower relative humidity, selectively prune crowded spots.
- Spores on leaves can be removed with the use of overhead irrigation. It’s best not to rely on this as a preventive measure, though, as moist foliage can frequently lead to the development of other common diseases.
Homemade Prevention
Powdery mildew can be effectively treated using sulfur, lime-sulfur, neem oil, and potassium bicarbonate, among other organic fungicides. When given before infection or as soon as disease symptoms appear, these are most beneficial.
- Many gardeners have demonstrated that baking soda works well to treat powdery mildew. Add 1 quart of water to 1 teaspoon of baking soda. Thoroughly mist plants because the solution only kills fungus that comes into touch with it.
- A further efficient home treatment is milk spray. Spray roses with milk that has been diluted with water (usually 1:10) at the first indication of infection or as a preventative step.
Fungicides
There are several fungicides that are highly efficient with low toxicity, no residue, and long duration, especially for rose plants. Triadimefon is one case in point. It can be sprayed 1000–1200 WP of 15–% wettable powder once every 10 days for a total of 23 times. However, you should ask your neighborhood nursery about fungicides that are legal there.
How to Control Powdery Mildew
Concentrate on preventing the illness from spreading to other plants because it is very difficult to eradicate it if plants are severely afflicted. Remove and destroy any fruit, stems, or foliage that has been contaminated. You can either burn them or dump them in the trash. Any plant that has been affected should not be composted because the illness might still be carried by the wind and linger in the composted materials.
Avoid touching healthy leaves with pruning shears after removing sick areas. Pruners should first be cleaned with rubbing alcohol.
