“Liliac,” a five-piece family rock/metal band from Los Angeles, has taken the world by storm. The meaning of the band’s name is “vampire bat in Romanian, the language of the parents of the siblings; Florin even asserts that he was born not far from the Dracula Castle.
The Cristea children sacrifice most of their weekends in addition to attending home school in an effort to devote as much time as possible to their music. To free up valuable practice time, Melody, Samuel, and Abigail all graduated at the age of 16 early as well.

The hard rock/metal group Liliac is made up of three brothers and two sisters. Their father Floren Cristea, also known as Chriss Floren, an accomplished music producer, had the idea for the group. He has written and produced songs for numerous American and European television programs and motion pictures, including Parental Control, MTV’s “True Life,” 10 on Top, Morning Hot Mix, A&E’s “Jackson’s Family Dynasty,” Lifetime’s “Bond of Silence,” and many others. At a young age, Chriss Floren noticed that his children had a musical talent. He then spent time coaching them to become better musicians and motivating them to follow their aspirations.
The lead guitarist is Samuel Cristea, who is 19 years old. The drummer is Abigail Cristea, 18, the vocalist and bassist is Melody Cristea, 16, the rhythm guitarist is Ethan Cristea, 11, and the keyboardist is Justin Cristea, 10.
Has it been generally smooth overall? If not, what obstacles did you encounter along the way?
The journey hasn’t always been easy. We relocated from Oregon to California in 2008 because we needed to file for bankruptcy. Our mother began working as a caregiver while our dad began working in his home studio. We essentially started from scratch. Dad used to instruct us and drive us to Santa Monica to perform when he wasn’t working. As we were studying, it wasn’t always simple for us to figure out how to obtain our performing permits and work permits, as well as what kind of equipment we needed. We experienced various frustrations, such as when our wagon—which is used to transport our equipment—would break down or when the batteries ran out and we were unable to play any longer. Every weekend, we have to load all of our gear into our van and put it all up before we can start playing. Additionally, we have received complaints from Santa Monica residents, and the police have responded by telling us to turn it down. Every Friday, the entire band practices for three hours in a studio that we rent, during which time we develop and perfect new songs. We would record our music in our father’s studio, which he owns and operates as a music producer. He records, mixes, and finds the proper tone for our music, all of which greatly assist us. We have become much stronger as a result of going through difficult circumstances, and we continue to develop and improve. We attend lessons once a week and put in endless hours of practice.
