The ideal approach to decorate your sunny porch or patio with plants that tolerate the heat is with trailing plants. Dichondra Silver Falls is incredibly heat- and drought-resistant and can reach lengths of up to 4 feet. Its silky smooth, shining silver leaf in your hanging baskets or container gardens will have a chill, calming appearance that you’ll appreciate. One of our favorites from Kaw Valley, you can rely on this hardy annual to survive even after several weeks of sweltering core-of-the-earth temps!
Sweet Potato Vine is another of our favorite trailing annuals. They have lovely foliage that can cover at least three to six feet! They are not only resistant to heat and drought, but they are also simple to grow and require little upkeep. You can use these lush vines as a spiller in your favorite container or as a beautiful addition to your landscaping in the areas of your yard that receive plenty of sunlight. They grow more quickly as the temperature rises! If there are deer or rabbits in your neighborhood, you should use Liquid Fence or Deer Off to prevent them from enjoying their favorite morning spread. Because of the neon-chartreuse foliage carpet of the Sweet Potato Vine ‘Marguerite,’ also known as the ’60-Mile-Per-Hour’ landscaping plant, people have been known to rubber-neck while driving past it. If you choose to plant it, make sure the planters are very large to fully appreciate the appearance. Sun-loving petunias are a necessity for your summer garden. Petunias are not only heat tolerant, but their vivid flowers also provide your yard the ideal amount of color. The petunia series “Petchoa, SuperCals” is one of our favorites. A rare cross between a petunia and a calibrachoa is known as a petchoa. These plants produce petunia-sized flowers and calibrachoa (also known as “Million Bells”), which has many blossoms. The nicest part is that, unlike Calibrachoas, they don’t care as much about the ph of the soil and will grow well in flower beds or pots with any good soil. These annuals are excellent summer performers and even self-cleaning! Petchoa’s: SuperCal Neon Rose and Violet stand out for its well-branched, enormous, mounding habit, and electric-colored blooms. Once you’ve tried them, you won’t be able to resist not growing them every year. They look fantastic alone or as part of a large mound of heat-tolerant, low-maintenance beauty. Simply fertilize frequently (every one to two weeks) and use Spinosad as a spray to stop budworm from eating all the blossoms.
The “King” of all petunias in the history of the plant kingdom, Supertunia Vista Bubblegum, must be mentioned while talking about petunias. Without a doubt, “Vista Bubblegum” is the best petunia and maybe the best performing annual on the market. It is by far the most vigorous and heavily covered in flowers throughout the season, and it also benefits from being self-cleaning (no deadheading is required). They can withstand intense heat well, and butterflies are attracted to their bubblegum pink blossoms. All other spreading petunias will underperform and outgrow the Proven Winners “Supertunias” in the “Vista” series. With “Vista Bubblegum” in your big hanging baskets or as a spiller in your big container gardens, you’ll enjoy a beautiful, pink light across your patio. A fantastic plant for beds and the landscape as well. For Memorial Day, my sister and I plant “Vista Bubblegum” close to our parents’ grave because not only did they like cultivating the greatest petunias in cold-frames to keep them sturdy, well-branched, and hardy, but also because they only require weekly watering due to their drought tolerance. Knowing that these guys are delighted to be adorning the final resting place of our devoted, hard-working parents, we appreciate being greeted by the lovely mounds of vibrant pink we can see from the entryway. At our greenhouse in Overland Park, we have a particularly impressive collection of this superflower.
Petunias grown in pots benefit from potting soil that drains well, such as our KVG Potting Soil, and need watering only when the top few inches of soil are dry. Spray a generous amount of Captain Jack’s Deadbug Brew once a week beginning in late May, or as soon as you notice tiny holes in your buds or flowers, if you’ve experienced problems with your blooms or buds being nibbled away. At any of our garden centers, you may purchase ready-to-use spray bottles and a wide variety of supertunias. With generous applications of KVG The Good Stuff fertilizer, about every other week, you can maintain these plants healthy all summer long. Even better, incorporate a few of our time-release granules into the ground prior to planting. By doing this, you can put off fertilizing until after it has been consumed, which is about early September. Petunias are heavy feeders, and if you use a brand like ours, it will be much less probable for it to burn and it won’t be as phosphorus-rich as the most popular national brand, which also leaches excess phosphorous into our groundwater. Our time-release and water-soluble fertilizers were created to be the healthiest for our plants and free of the ridiculously excessive amounts of phosphorus seen in green boxed shit. Filling those bare sunny spaces in your yard with bushy plants is a terrific idea. The magnificent, bushy plant known as “Angelonia, BIG Indigo” is also called as “Summer Snapdragon” and has dark green foliage and heavenly-scented, dark purple flower spikes with a white eye. You can place them in the warmest area of your yard with no worries because they thrive in intense heat. They will function nicely in partial shade as well. By planting them in well-draining soil and watering them when necessary, you can enjoy their stunning, continuous flower spires together with the bees and hummingbirds.
Another one of our faves from Proven Winners is Evolvulus “Blue My Mind.” It boasts stunning, unadulterated deep sky-blue blossoms and enjoys heat! These plants can withstand heat and drought once they are established. These mounded plants are perfect for window boxes, container gardens, and hanging baskets because of their silvery foliage and continuous flowers.
