How should I purchase tulips?
Could it be that spring is finally here now that the weather has finally warmed up and the snow is slowly beginning to melt? Having flowers in the house is one of my favorite ways to make it seem like spring even when the weather is still a little cool. Tulips are a great choice, especially at this time of year when you can get them almost anywhere! Can you say steal of a deal? They frequently go on sale for $3 per bundle, although they generally cost $5-6 or more for a bundle of 5 stems. I enjoy gathering several bundles and filling a vase with them for our island. They don’t last very long, usually only a week, but I think it is a terrific price for a week’s worth of enjoyment for less than $30!
Normally, I do a lot to support local florists, but I have to admit that sometimes while I’m out and about purchasing groceries for the week, I just buy tulips at the grocery store. So, whether you get them from your favorite grocery store or local florist, I thought I’d provide some advice on how to choose the FRESHEST tulips and how to best care for them so that you may enjoy them for the entire week and not just a few days.
The following is a list of items to look out for:
Examine the stems; they need to be pleasant and crisp and simple to snap. They SHOULD NOT have a floppy, limp feeling. When you cut them and put them in water, their crooked stems will usually straighten out within a day as long as they are FIRM.
This is quite basic, but search for bloom bundles that are still tightly closed and have not yet opened. Even green bundles that are so tightly wound are occasionally picked up by me.
You should seek out bundles with leaves that are a healthy shade of green rather than yellow.
Make sure the stems’ bottoms are healthy, not squishy or moldy, or anything else by taking a brief look at them.
One of the BEST indications to watch for is this (in my opinion). Measure the distance along the stem from the bloom to the topmost leaf. Many people are unaware that tulips continue to grow after being cut and placed in water; therefore, they are considered to be fresh tulips if there is a very short distance between the bloom and the first leaf. However, even if there is a smaller or unopened bloom, but there is a long distance between the bloom and the first leaf, the bundle isn’t considered to be very fresh.
A side note: Don’t be afraid to inquire about other bundles if there aren’t many out on show or if they might not be at their best. It’s not unheard of for a back cooler to contain additional product that has just not yet been consumed, so it never hurts to inquire! The worst thing they can say is no.
You should be able to select lovely, healthy tulip bundles using those suggestions. They really don’t require anything else; you can take them home and be sure you’ll have a lovely vase of flowers, which is one of the things I enjoy about them. You can mix them with other flowers and greens, though. Anyway, there are a few things you can do to make sure they live longer now that you have them at home.
The most important factor is having CLEAN water. Bacteria in the water is one factor that limits the longevity of flowers. Make sure your vase is completely clean (use bleach if necessary) and free of any leftover nasty materials from the last time it was used. I am aware that there is an old wives’ story about placing a penny in the water with your tulips, but I do not advise it because you will also need clean water! Throwing a coin into your water encourages the spread of bacteria because they are frequently handled by many hands and are typically not very clean. Make sure you follow the directions on how much water to use in relation to the flower food if your tulips came with a package of flower food. Because flower food contains carbohydrates, putting too much of it in your water will also encourage the growth of germs. It’s okay if they didn’t include flower food. Normally, I just use regular tap water. Make sure the water is clear of any “debris” like broken leaves, petals, and the like because they will encourage the spread of bacteria. You should remove the flowers, wash the vase once more, and add fresh water if the water becomes cloudy as the days pass. The tulips will need to be recut because they will have been sitting without water.
Now that your vase is clean and filled with fresh water, it’s time to add the tulips. The stems may benefit from a light rinsing because they can contain a fair quantity of sand. You will then use a clean, sharp knife to cut them. Both a serrated knife and scissors should be avoided because they won’t produce a clean cut and may even break the stems, making it impossible for the plant to produce any liquid. Many people recommend cutting your stems at an angle since it improves the surface area that can absorb water, but this is not a requirement, so don’t worry too much about it.
Last but not least, you need to make sure the arrangement is in a decent atmosphere. You should keep it out of the direct sunlight, heat-emitting appliances, and vents. This will stop the blooms from drying out or becoming overheated.
