The largest flower show in the world, the Keukenhof, is only 15 minutes from Leiden and 30 minutes from Amsterdam. It is known for its abundance of tulips. The largest flower auction in the world, FloraHolland, is at Aalsmeer, which is only 30 minutes by vehicle from Amsterdam.

Every tradition has its origins, and frequently those origins are completely accidental. Consider the 38th annual Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival in Woodburn, which is the biggest tulip festival in Oregon. The Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival might not exist if it weren’t for a neighbor’s suggestion in 1985 that the Iverson family allow visitors access to their fields.

According to the farm’s owner, Barb Iverson, “My parents, Ross and Dorothy, bought the farm in 1950 and then had six children because they needed help on the farm.
In 1974, the family began cultivating tulips after a farmer in Canby who had been growing the blooms under contract chose to put away his gardening tools. The family purchased the bulbs in 1980 and began cultivating them for the wholesale bulb industry after the contractor they had been working with retired.
It was difficult, so in 1983 we established the Wooden Shoe Bulb Company in an effort to aid in the sale of bulbs to the retail sector, according to Barb. We attended numerous garden exhibits, but we didn’t make many sales. After two years, we began to question whether this was a good idea. But then we reasoned that Easter would soon arrive and the fields would be in flower.
So they bought an ad in the neighborhood paper, opened the fields for the Easter weekend, and followed their neighbor’s advise to do so. And now, 35 years later, Wooden Shoe Tulip Fest is one of the three biggest tulip festivals in the Pacific Northwest and the biggest in the state.
“The entire family participates in the celebration,” remarked Barb. “The six founding family members and their spouses provide assistance in a variety of capacities, from parking to banking. As they grew up, each of the 24 members of the following generation worked for Wooden Shoe, and some of them continue to do so as adults.
We want to give back and support others because, as Barb noted, doing so benefits the entire community. “For parking, we ask organizations like Kiwanis, Rotary, FFA, and school clubs to help park in exchange for a donation. We invite local farmers and farm loop participants to come out and sell their food or even bring out animals like the Marquam Hill Ranch alpacas or the “cowlebrities” from TMK Creamery.
This year, there will be a weekend-only miniature farmer’s market with locally produced goods. Additionally, they take part in the community’s “adopt-a-road” program, picking up over 5 miles of roadside litter. They also organize a number of flower fundraisers for the March of Dimes, Easter Seals, Lions Clubs, garden clubs, hospitals, and other organizations, offering them excellent wholesale prices to support their causes.
At Wooden Shoe, community also includes guests. And they come from all around the world.
We have been posting maps for people to mark where they are from for the past several years, said Barb. “Last spring, all 50 states had a pin in them after just four days of the festival. On our world map, we typically have pins in 130 different nations. It’s simply incredible. Many different languages can be heard as you stroll through the field, and many visitors will even dress in the traditional garb from their own nation. Here on our family farm, there is a chance to interact with individuals from all over the world, which is amazing in and of itself.

In Norfolk, there are primarily two locations where one can discover tulip fields. The Belmont Nurseries in King’s Lynn is the first and most well-known. Before the annual crop, during April and May, more than 60 million tulips are shown here. The second location is a tiny field in East Winch. Finding this is a little difficult because, unlike the Belmont Nurseries, there are no signs directing you to the field in East Winch (we found it for a fortunate case while passing from there).

Be aware that this field probably belongs to a nearby flower shop, therefore even if you are free to move around on it, you should show respect for the flowers by not walking on them and by only using the designated side spaces between the rows.
