Over 75 species of flowering plants in the genus Hydrangea (/hadrendi/), sometimes known as Hortensia or hydrangea, are indigenous to Asia and the Americas. Both the smooth and oakleaf varieties are native to damp woodlands with a variety of hardwood trees, and they both do well in soils that retain moisture and are rich in organic matter (naturally, that would be decomposing leaf and twig litter found on the forest floor). However, the inflorescence form (creamy white cones of flowers on H. quercifolia that age to red and brown, and creamy white spherical dome or ball-shaped that age to silvery-tan on H. arborescens) and foliage pattern of these shrubs differ in appearance (thick, large oakleaf-shaped foliage on H. quercifolia, and thin, flat green leavesthat are prone to wilting in summer heaton H. arborescens). Its suckering habit also lends itself to massing and use as a summer hedge.

Both lacecaps and mopheads are hardy, sun- and shade-tolerant plants, some of which thrive in coastal environments. In fact, hydrangea mopheads have become a native species on some islands in the Hauraki Gulf, particularly in the bays on Kawau Island that face south.

Along with Hydrangea serrata, one of Glyn’s favorites, other well-liked Asian hydrangeas include Hydrangea paniculata, renowned for its large, snow-white flowerheads, simple maintenance, and cold tolerance. This latter species, which naturally grows in Japan and Korea’s forested and mountainous regions, is less resistant of heat, wind, and drought than Hydrangea macrophylla.

Hydrangea aspera subsp. villosa is a big shrub that can reach heights of over 3 meters and is occasionally referred to as the “tree hydrangea.” It produces stunning lacecap flowerheads with mauve or blue centers and outside edges that are either white or pink.

The deciduous climbing Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris, which inhabits the same regions as Hydrangea serrata, is a less frequent Asian species. Early summer brings lacecap blossoms to this self-clinging vine.

Due to their extreme cold hardiness, the two North American varieties Hydrangea arborescens and Hydrangea quercifolia are highly common in areas with frequent frosts. The majority of Hydrangea arborescens varieties are drought tolerant, produce huge white flowerheads, and are content in sun or shade. The different varieties of this drought-tolerant species grow well in shade or sunlight, and the creamy white blooms of oak-leaved Hydrangea quercifolia are cone-shaped (more so in cooler regions). Glyn and other experts, however, challenge the value of this method, contending that it is much preferable to cooperate with nature as opposed to fighting it by picking cultivars that will provide the greatest color for your soil.

Do hydrangeas grow naturally in Georgia?
