When To Plant Wave Petunias

  • Plantings of Wave Petunias can be made almost anywhere that is sunny. They do exceptionally well in gardens and look great in window boxes, large containers, and hanging baskets.

How to keep your Wave Petunias safe:

  • Once the low temperature at night stays above 40 degrees, waves can be planted outside.
  • If you wish to cover them with a sheet when temps fall below 40 degrees, you can plant them early.
  • Store in a bright area.
  • Keep in mind that plants in the sun will dry out more quickly.
  • Sun through a window is inferior than sun from outside.
  • If left unattended, windows can intensify the sunlight and “fry the plants.”
  • Bring inside once more at night.
  • If plants do not receive enough sunlight, they will substantially yellow out.
  • Don’t water your plants excessively. Plants will perish as a result of root rot.
  • The best time to water is in the morning. The leaves shouldn’t be wet at night.
  • Check the soil’s moisture level before watering your plants because overwatering and underwatering have similar symptoms.
  • Dry out the soil a little bit between waterings.

Remember the following when planting Wave Petunias:

  • After the final spring frost, when the nighttime temperature reliably rises above 40 degrees, plant Wave Petunias.
  • Plant in full sunlight (minimum of 6 hours per day).
  • The ability of a plant to withstand heat increases with age. If possible, plant your Wave Petunias as early as possible to give them time to develop sturdy root systems before the summer heat arrives.
  • Keep the plant at the same depth it was in the pot or pack at first.
  • Garden beds with Space Wave Petunias spaced 12 to 24 inches apart.
  • Put three plants in a container, hanging basket, or patio planter measuring 10 to 12 inches for rich, full displays. For an appealing, balanced presentation, larger containers will need more plants.

Care:

  • In between waterings, don’t let your Wave Petunias dry out. If at all possible, water your plants in the morning so that the leaves have time to dry before dusk.
  • Heavy “feeders” are wave petunias. Every 10 to 14 days, use a liquid fertilizer.
  • Wave petunias require little upkeep. The plants will naturally let the dried-up, faded blossoms fall off.

Are Wave petunias replanted each year?

We’ve been asked a lot of questions throughout the years regarding our plants. Here are some responses to some often asked questions about petunia distribution.

Do spreading petunias need deadheading?

Generally speaking, no! Petunias for spreading are relatively low maintenance and don’t require deadheading. Throughout the summer, cutting back your Wave petunias can improve plant health and encourage new growth.

Do they come back every year?

No, Wave petunias will only grow for one growing season since, at least for the majority of the United States, they are annuals. Nevertheless, these plants can produce gorgeous blooms all summer long and will develop to an astounding size.

How long do they last?

Wave petunias typically bloom well into the fall. This depends on whether they contracted a sickness, received medical attention during the summer heat, and how soon it starts to get cold where you live.

Can you put Wave petunias in the ground?

The wave petunia combines the petunia’s behavior with that of a trailing vine plant. The flowers are distinctive to the original petunia and come in a variety of shades, including white, pink, red, purple, and yellow. These bloom continuously throughout the growing season and don’t need to be picked like a typical petunia.

There are various forms of wave petunias, including trailing, mounding, and spreading types. They grow well when planted directly in the ground and are suitable for hanging baskets and pots. The types that trail will spread out by 2 to 3 feet. Plan accordingly as your application grows.

Full sun is preferred for growing wave petunias. Although they can handle some sun, they struggle in the shadow. As long as you give them enough water and fertilizer, heat won’t be an issue. You can use your fingertips to feel the soil. If it is dry, it need treatment.

How cold should it be for petunias?

Temperatures between 61 to 80F during the day and 55 to 65F at night are ideal for petunia growth.

Even though Wave petunias can withstand temperatures as low as 35F, they are quickly killed by temperatures below freezing and anything below 40F.

If petunias have been progressively acclimating as autumn temperatures have set in, they may be able to survive a little frost or a coating of snow.

Petunias can be planted in the spring.

Petunia Planting Time. Petunias should be planted in the spring after the risk of frost has passed. Petunias can be planted at any time of the day, but you should water the plant right away to keep it hydrated and shield it from the heat and direct sunshine.

Don’t overpack your basket

As previously indicated, Wave petunias grow quickly. When the plants are young, you don’t want to make the error of overstuffing your Wave petunia basket. Wave petunias can still outcompete other plants in a hanging basket even though they aren’t quite as vigorous as Supertunias.

You could get away with planting only one Wave petunia plant per hanging basket, but many people will plant three to really achieve a good show (stick with odd numbers). This will primarily depend on the size of your basket, but for a typical 12-basket arrangement, 3 plants should be more than plenty.

Be careful not to crowd any of the plants when planting Wave petunias in a hanging basket with another plant.

Plant the hanging basket early

Wave petunias are excellent growers, so even plantings made later will succeed. However, the earlier you can safely put them outside, the better—as with any annuals! You can do this to get out of the house and see some blossoms before everyone else.

Fertilize throughout the summer

Even though your hanging basket’s potting soil already contains slow-release fertilizer, we nevertheless advise fertilizing it all summer long.

Depending on how much fertilizer the potting soil contained, how the plants are doing, and how much sun the hanging basket is getting, some growers advise fertilizing hanging baskets every third watering.

Keep in the sun

Make sure your Wave petunia gets at least six hours of sunlight, while we’re on the subject. With the right care, wave petunias can withstand the sweltering afternoon sun. As a general, petunias enjoy the sun, so make sure they are receiving it.

The Wave petunia may not bloom as abundantly or develop stunted growth if not given adequate sun.

Cut back the Wave petunia for fresh growth

The fact that Wave petunias don’t require deadheading is a big advantage. However, we discover that pruning Wave petunias will increase growth and subsequent blooms.

If you see that the Wave petunia in your hanging basket is straggly or is displacing other plants in the basket, feel free to trim it back.

Keep the hanging basket watered but don’t overwater

While Wave petunias enjoy the sun, when grown in a hanging basket, they will be more dependent on you for water. Throughout the summer, be careful to keep the basket well-watered, especially on particularly hot days.

You might need to water the hanging basket once or more per day during the summer heat.

Check to see if the soil’s top inch or so is damp to determine whether it needs some water. Alternately, you can raise the basket from below to gauge its weight. If watering is required, a Wave petunia hanging basket will be substantially lighter.

Are Wave petunias deadheaded?

It won’t take much time or effort to care for wave petunias. These plants appear to be expanding daily in their desire to develop and prosper.

They should be planted in wet, well-drained soil in full sun. Never let the soil become waterlogged; keep it damp.

When you first plant them, feed them with an all-purpose fertilizer. After that, feed them every two weeks until the middle of the summer.

Do wave petunias need deadheading? This is the pure brilliance of these plants, which accounts for their widespread use in gardens. Waves never require deadheading, in contrast to other petunia plants that require continual cutting and maintenance throughout the growing season. Without you needing to cut even one flower, they will keep growing and blooming.

What distinguishes Wave petunias from normal petunias?

Wave petunias bloom extremely frequently and have a distinctive trailing growth habit. They are excellent summer performers and drape over the sides of containers and raised beds. A typical petunia grows erect or in a bush. While it might spread a little, it won’t fall as dramatically as a Wave petunia. An older hybrid than Waves, Cascade petunias are named after the Cascade mountain range rather than after how they grow. A shrub type petunia is called a cascade petunia.

What degree of heat can wave petunias withstand?

57 to 65°F at night (14 to 18C) 61 to 75F on days (16 to 24C) However, keep in mind that crop timing (time to flower) is connected to daily average temperature when grown under optimum daylength. Wave petunias may endure temperatures as low as 35F (2C).

Are Wave petunias in need of pruning?

Wave petunias frequently flourish all season long without requiring pruning. In the middle of the summer, if the plants start to appear sad, lanky, and ragged, it’s okay to trim them back to about half their original length. After pruning, water and fertilize the plants right away to promote strong new growth. To prevent spreading illness to your plants, always remember to disinfect your pruning tool blades before using them.

How are Wave petunias kept in bloom all summer long?

It all boils down to how healthy your plant is. A Wave petunia can reach its full potential if it is given the right care. This denotes abundant and robust blooming.

The opposite is also accurate. Your Wave petunia plant might require a little more care if you discover that it didn’t get off to the ideal start or didn’t get the early attention it required.

Your Wave petunias might be able to recover, though, if you concentrate on some of the locations listed below.

Make sure they are getting plenty of sunlight

Petunias in general, including wave petunias, adore the sun. They will require at least six hours of sunlight, with a full day of sunlight being ideal.

Lack of exposure to sunshine may be the cause if you planted your Wave petunias in a shaded area and the plants aren’t flowering as you’d like them to.

Begonias are a common choice if you’re seeking for a plant that will still bloom even with less sunshine.

Wave petunias are frequently planted in hanging baskets by growers. One of the most often used plant species by gardeners for hanging plant arrangements. Simply relocate the container to a location where it will receive more sunlight if you are growing them in a hanging basket or pot.

Keep them wateredbut don’t overwater them

On the other hand, you might notice that your Wave petunias don’t bloom as much if they receive too much sunlight and insufficient water.

Make sure the plant is adequately watered because it needs sunlight and water to survive.

Checking the soil’s moisture in the top inch or so is a smart technique to make sure. It’s probably fine if the soil near the surface is at least slightly damp.

If you’re growing Wave petunias in a hanging basket, you can lift the basket to feel how much water it needs by doing so. If it is adequately watered, it should feel noticeably heavy, and if it is dehydrated, visibly light.

If overwatered, wave petunias are susceptible to root rot and other illnesses, so take careful to water them just enough to keep them healthy. Your Wave petunias will recover in this way and produce an abundance of blooms.

Fertilize the plants when needed

A water-soluble fertilizer should be added when necessary while watering. Wave petunias require nutrients, just like other plants, thus it’s critical to maintain a healthy fertilization level.

Follow the directions on any fertilizers you use, and consider the season. During the summer, when you might be watering every day, you might only need to water once or twice a week, but this frequency will probably change in the spring and fall.

If you neglect to fertilize the plants, Wave petunias are less understanding than Supertunias. You may tell they need more nutrients if you notice the vines starting to turn yellow.

Give them space

Make sure you give the space that spreaders like wave petunias need! It is advised that you plant them at least a foot apart because their vines may get up to 4 feet long.

When wave petunias are grown in containers or hanging baskets with restricted root space, they might not be able to reach their full potential and produce as many blooms.

Trim the plant to promote growth

Last but not least, pruning back your Wave petunias is a fantastic strategy to encourage the development of new flowers. Cutting back a plant when you want it to grow more may seem counterintuitive, yet it is frequently necessary when dealing with a straggly plant.

Treat it for budworms

It’s likely that despite your best efforts, the Wave petunias are still in bloom. The budworm might be to blame.

Budworms are an insect pest that wreak havoc on a variety of garden plants, particularly petunias.

If your Wave petunia plant is being affected by budworms, you’ll probably notice holes in the blossoms. These seem to be a problem in Pennsylvania in the late summer.

Budworm can be handled in a variety of ways. Thurocide has proven to be efficient in eliminating budworms and reviving Wave petunia blooms.

To answer the first portion of your question, petunias can live for two or three years, but they typically behave like annuals because they can’t withstand the harsh winter weather. See more below on that.

It’s challenging to accurately assign a timeline to each particular blossom in the second part. Despite the fact that they don’t have a long lifespan, the plant produces so many of them that you might not even notice.
