The first step in preventing powdery mildew on peony is to purchase or transplant only healthy, disease-free stock. According to the University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program, the growing location should provide the peony with full sun, well-drained soil, and plenty of air circulation.
As soon as diseased leaves appear, remove and destroy them. To prevent powdery mildew the following season, trim unhealthy peonies back to the ground and clear the area of all debris in the fall. Trees should not be cut down completely since they won’t grow back.
Avoid overfertilizing peonies since it promotes weak new growth. To increase distance and airflow, divide peonies that are overgrown or congested in the fall.
Do I need to prune back peonies that have powdery mildew?
The good news is that peony powdery mildew is more of a cosmetic issue than a health issue. However, extreme occurrences of this chalky fungus might impair a plant’s immunological response. If so, it’s better to get rid of the vegetation right away, before the leaves dry out and start to fall to the ground.
How is powdery mildew on peony treated?
Depending on the nature and severity of the issue, powdery mildew can be challenging to treat once it manifests. Therefore, prevention is crucial. It is usually sufficient to stay away from susceptible cultivars, place plants in full sun, provide good air circulation, and maintain plants properly (i.e., with water, fertilizer, etc.). Watering early in the day could also be beneficial.
Despite taking the best possible safeguards, powdery mildew is still a possibility. Fungicides can be helpful when used early on, but stronger infections may require the use of horticultural oil or neem oil. You can alternatively make your own solution by combining a gallon (4 L) of water with a tablespoon (15 ml) each of baking soda, horticultural oil (or canola), and liquid dish soap (without bleach). During the summer, mist your peonies every 10 to 14 days. Spraying the solution shouldn’t be done on hot, sunny days, and you should always test it on a tiny section of the plant before applying it to the entire thing.
Should you remove powdery mildew-covered leaves?
I was struck once more. I was caught aback when I discovered the dreaded white fuzzy layers of fungus on some of my squash leaves. It was like receiving a blind punch to the belly.

These few and largely cosmetic spots might go unnoticed by a novice gardener, but beware—if allowed to grow unchecked, they will spread like wildfire, uncontrolled and uncontrollable, until it is too late. Your crop will be lost because the entire plant will have to be removed.
Different fungus species that can infect grapes, cucumbers, melons, squash, and cucumbers are collectively referred to as powdery mildew. The drawback of this illness is that once your plant contracts it, there is no cure; however, it may be controlled, and in my personal experience, it must be done as soon as you see those awful white patches.
How to Prevent Powdery Mildew
The secret to this terrible illness is prevention, but don’t worry, powdery mildew will affect every grower. After this, we’ll begin to manage it.
I prefer to combine 1 tsp of baking soda with 1 quart of water to make a solution to stop it. Then, once a week, I spray this on the foliage of my zucchini and squash plants. As soon as the leaves begin to emerge, it must be done. By increasing the PH levels, this treatment makes the atmosphere unfriendly for plants.
How to Control Powdery Mildew
The trick is to control it quickly after infection before it becomes uncontrollable. Here is the three-step procedure I employ to manage powdery mildew.
It’s crucial to remove each stem at the plant’s base since the powdery mildew will spread to the leaves and stems. You don’t want to leave homes for an even worse catastrophe because squash plant stems are hollow and a perfect place for bugs to live. Ensure you always chop them off at the base. I’ll tell you what, those squash bugs are not enjoyable to deal with!
Be sure to inspect each leaf from top to bottom as well. While some leaves may appear fine from the top, turning them over reveals a thick layer of powder mildew.
Use your best judgment if your entire plant is covered in powdery mildew since you can’t remove all of the leaves. The leaves with the most powdery mildew should be removed.
After you’ve clipped your leaves, get rid of the sickly plants. Because the fungus might remain latent throughout the winter and infect your plants again the following year, don’t compost them.
Step 2. Prune Your Plants to Encourage Air Flow
Examine your plant carefully to determine whether it requires pruning. Cut some stems from your plant if it is dense and condensed to promote ventilation, which should aid in halting the growth of powdery mildew.
Step 3: Spray Your Plants with a Milk and Dish Wash Solution Weekly
This is crucial. I put a solution of milk and organic dish soap on my affected plants once a week.
I add 1 tbls. of this dish soap along with 1 part whole milk to 9 parts water. For me, it functions incredibly well. I make sure to spray it over all of the plant’s affected foliage, top and bottom, as well as the remaining leaves. The milk delays the spread of the mildew rather than killing it.
I use a mix of these 3 easy techniques to manage powdery mildew. Once infected, it is crucial to keep an eye on your plants and to continue caring for them during the entire growing season with trimming and a milk/dish soap solution. Pull the plant if it becomes too out of control and consider preventive for the following year.
When do peonies become pruned back?
Fall is the time to trim the plants to the ground after they begin to turn yellow or brown. The best time to prune the plants is in the early fall or after the first frost. Cutting peonies in the fall aids in eradicating foliar diseases and lowering infection the following season. Simply remove and discard all of the growth at the soil level.
What happens if peonies aren’t pruned back?
In the winter, you don’t really need to do anything to or for your herbaceous bush peony plants. However, if you discover that you neglected to remove the stems in the fall, you still have time to do so.
Herbaceous (bush) peony, such as the intersectional Itoh peonies, eventually lose their leaves and stems when the plants hibernate for the winter. Put the stems and leaves in the trash after disposal. Peony stems and leaves shouldn’t be composted since they can harbor botrytis, a fungal disease, especially in moist environments. Each peony plant’s surrounding area should be cleaned up.
Most places don’t require mulching peonies. If you mulch your herbaceous bush peony plants, make sure to take it off in the early spring to avoid burying the roots too far. Years of mulching or applying bark dust around bush peony will eventually cause the roots to be buried too deeply, which could lead to fewer spring blooms. Just an inch or two of soil should remain above the roots of herbaceous bush peony after you remove that.
Additionally, it is normal for a mature peony’s crown to gradually heave up through the ground and display some exposed “eyes” in the winter. Don’t worry, peony plants enjoy the harsh winters.
Tree peony leaves must be removed from the ground and branches when they start to degrade. A tree peony’s branches are left hanging, barren and naked for the winter, rather of being chopped down in the fall. Don’t worry too much if you or a helper cuts a tree peony down to the ground and you panic or feel dejected. It’s likely that the roots have grown deeply enough to support spring branch growth. It might grow into a magnificent, revitalized tree peony in two or three years. I’ve seen it happen, so I know. In contrast to bush peony, tree peonies prefer more soil on top of the roots. Try adding a few inches of soil around the base of the trunk of a tree peony if it has lost its vigor. Yes, it is exactly the reverse of what is suggested for bush peony.
You can go outside again after the snow melts and it’s nice out to work on any “lost” stems.
Why does powdery mildew appear on peonies?
I’ve had peonies for a long time. Some of them were white, as though covered with mold, when I pruned them back this fall. Will the plant be affected the next year? Should I take any action in response to it? Do you understand what led to it?

Peony cultivars vary in their susceptibility to powdery mildew, just like other susceptible plants. It is better to switch out a plant entirely or with a resistant type of peonies if you have one that is consistently deformed.
High humidity, moderate temperatures, and rainy weather are all factors that encourage the growth of powdery mildew. In the shade, when they receive overhead watering, and in areas with poor air circulation, such as those that are overgrown or crowded with other plants, plants are more susceptible to damage.
Prevention is key because once your peonies are infected, there is no spray that can treat them. The issue can be greatly avoided by choosing resistant cultivars and properly situating them in full light with sufficient air circulation.
Disease prevention can be aided by good cleanliness. The conclusion of the growing season is always the greatest time to remove sick plant foliage from the garden. If you see any sick plant portions, you might want to prune them out. But before you cut, consider how the plant’s appearance will be impacted by the pruning.
There are fungicides available to attempt and stop powdery mildew. However, the spraying needs to be done early in the growing season, before powdery mildew is visible, and it needs to be done again every 10 to 14 days. You can also try making your own fungicide by combining 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 tablespoon horticultural or canola oil, and 1 tablespoon liquid dish soap in 1 gallon of water. Personally, I wouldn’t waste my time using fungicides to stop powdery mildew.
Botrytis is a different, more harmful disease that occasionally infects peony and causes young stems to droop and die as well as buds to become black. When it is below 70 degrees in the early spring, onset occurs. If this illness is discovered, it must be treated right once because it will damage peony plants. As soon as you notice unhealthy plant parts, remove them. To prevent the illness from spreading to more stems or other plants, make sure to clean your pruners between cuts with alcohol or Lysol disinfectant.
Winter weather does powdery mildew survive?
A family of closely similar fungi called the Erysiphaceae are the culprits behind powdery mildew.

- To absorb nutrients, specialized structures pierce the tissue of the plant.
- Long chains of spores are produced, rising up in a vertical column perpendicular to the surface of the leaf. The wind disperses these spores once they break off.
- Cool, humid nights that encourage spore development and warm (70 to 80 F), dry days that enable spore dispersal are ideal for powdery mildew fungi to flourish.
- Some of the fungi attack the woody plants’ buds.
- A chasmothecia is a black, spherical, rigid, resting structure that is produced by powdery mildew fungi. These shelters keep spores contained and safe from the elements. Later, when the weather conditions are favorable, spores are discharged.
- Some powdery mildew fungi can survive the winter on leaves that don’t turn brown. This might imply that the fungus lives on greenhouse plants in Minnesota.
- Additionally, fresh spores that survived the winter on plants in southern states may be brought into the state by the wind.
Will the soil still have powdery mildew?
Although powdery mildew can be found in almost every growth zone, it prefers environments with lengthy stretches of warm, dry weather. Similar to how PM can go very out of control in our garden here on the temperate Central Coast of California if left unchecked! However, powdery mildew enjoys a little dampness as well, just like any other fungus would. The fungi are encouraged to grow by the moisture in humid air (or nighttime dew), and the spores are disseminated by the warm, dry air throughout the day.
Although they can survive or overwinter in soil, compost, mulch, or other plant waste, powdery mildew spores primarily thrive on plants. Wind, insects, water splashing, or direct contact with diseased plants are some of the ways that the spores are transferred from plant to plant (or are first brought into your garden). Powdery mildew is also more likely to grow in crowded areas, places with poor airflow, and in shade.
Light grey or white, dusty-looking patches or blotches are the hallmarks of powdery mildew. They are typically rounded, fluffy, and occasionally somewhat elevated. The telltale dots will initially be visible on the tips of plant leaves. If you look closely (or as the illness worsens), you could notice mildew on stems, the undersides of leaves, on blooms, and occasionally even on the actual fruit or vegetable. The plant looks as though it has been sprinkled with flour or powdered sugar when it has a severe case of powdery mildew. Eventually, the diseased leaves could dry out and turn yellow.
Once you are familiar with powdery mildew, identifying it is not too difficult. However, it could be mistaken for other fungi-related illnesses, like downy mildew (which causes darker spots on leaves instead). Even more, sometimes natural patterns on plant leaves might resemble mildew as well! Take a look at the illustration of our zucchini plant below, for instance. Some melons, squash, and zucchini plants naturally have white spots or variegation on their leaves, depending on the variety.
The main distinction is that a naturally occurring leaf pattern will be flat (not fuzzy or dusty) and appear more uniform, most likely “mirrored across both sides of leaf veins. Mildew spots, on the other hand, typically appear on the top and bottom sides of leaves and are much more sporadic in their distribution. In contrast to the natural leaf pattern, PM can be removed with a damp cloth or paper towel (or at least made to momentarily appear to do so).
The good news is that plants seldom die from powdery mildew. But that doesn’t imply you should ignore it just because it won’t kill you. A few little spots won’t initially do any damage to the host plant, but they can transfer spores to other plants or remain in the soil of your garden. The fungus feeds on and steals nutrients from the plant as the condition worsens, leaving it stunted or less productive.
Photosynthesis can be hampered when powdery mildew covers a substantial section of leaves. For the plant, this is essentially a slow famine. Since the plant will be producing fewer sugars as a result of a change in photosynthesis, crop flavor may also be affected. Last but not least, infections with powdery mildew stress plants, and stressed plants are more vulnerable to other illnesses or pest damage.
In general, people are not harmed by powdery mildew. It is therefore neither harmful nor poisonous. However, some people are allergic to mildews and mold and are therefore advised to proceed with caution. We have undoubtedly consumed our fair share of crops with a few mildew patches as mildew is pretty prevalent in our garden (I hate the idea of wasting food). We simply thoroughly wash the produce before eating it, but we do not eat any pieces that are seriously diseased.
