When To Add Bone Meal To Hydrangeas

Using crushed bones as fertilizer may seem a little disgusting, but the plants benefit greatly from the fine, powdery stuff.

Bone meal is an excellent source of phosphorus, which is necessary for the development of strong roots. Plants don’t grow as well without strong roots. For this reason, I add it to the soil both when I plant and later, as the plants grow. They constantly establish new roots.

It is still possible to use too much fertilizer and harm the plants, even when using organic fertilizer (and make sure it is genuinely organic!) like bone meal and blood meal.

Part II of “The Myth of Phosphate. For the growth of its roots and flowers, roses require phosphate fertilizer.

She began by noticing that she could not discover any scientific data suggesting that roses needed more phosphorus than other plants. And in fact the phosphate levels of most soils are absolutely appropriate for roses and all plantssomething my soil studies and observations found all those years ago.

Numerous studies have shown that roses retain symbiotic connections with helpful fungi, just like the majority of terrestrial plants. If you add phosphate to your rose plants, you will diminish the ability of mycorrhizal fungi to colonize the rose roots.

That was an eye opener. Because studies demonstrate they have an effect on essential soil life, I’ve always advocated against systemic all-in-one fertilizers, fungicides, and insecticides, but here was a unique situation. Prof. Chalker continues by adding.

“Rose roots must work harder to draw water and nutrients from the soil in the absence of these fungal companions. Additionally, other soil organisms suffer harm as a result of the excess phosphate. Soil salinity rises with greater fertilizer inputs. Now that you’ve established an artificial system, the soil’s health is so compromised that you must keep adding fertilizer to keep your plants alive.

That final sentence is excellent news if you own stock in a firm that manufactures chemical fertilizers, but it’s bad news for your roses. These active soil organisms provide the organic elements that help your roses strengthen their own natural immune system by cooperating with them. According to Professor Chalker, we are obstructing that process by introducing artificial fertilizers.

“I think this is what has happened in many rose-filled settings. Homeowners with good intentions but poor judgment frequently over-apply phosphate and other fertilizers, insecticides, and fungicides to the point that the soil system is irreparably damaged. Rose enthusiasts add more of these compounds because without the beneficial soil organisms, roses are more vulnerable to nutrient deficits and opportunistic illnesses.

Another justification for treating roses like any other plant. Roses are, after all, plants as well.
