Who is the Daffodil Queen for 2021?
Even COVID is powerless to stop the Daffodil Festival. Last year, when the state shut down, we had to essentially cancel plans at the last minute. This year, the cherished princesses are back in all their splendor. At the Washington State Spring Fair earlier this month, they had a great time meeting guests. On April 26, the Daffodil Royal Court gathered at Farm 12 in Puyallup for the Queen’s Coronation celebration.
Each of the 23 princesses entered the stage carrying a bouquet of daffodils as she was introduced, gave a one-minute speech, and responded to an unexpected question. They all looked stunning in their yellow dresses and matching yellow face masks.
It was time for the five judges to select the new queen after the 2019 Daffodil Queen Katie Gilbert gave her final speech. This was not an easy task given how poised and well spoken each princess was that evening. The judges, according to Coronation emcee Jamie Gregory, “The hardest duty in the house is yours.
As anticipation grew, Puyallup High School student Katie Rose Abegglen was named the 2021 Daffodil Queen. As she received the crown, robe, and scepter used by Daffodil Queens for decades, the audience cheered and applauded.

Guadalupe Perez-Dolores of Sumner High School was selected by her fellow princesses as Miss Congeniality, and the Tacoma Yacht Club Shipmates will award her with a $1,000 prize.
The audience immediately filled to capacity with family members and supporters of the princesses, so it was necessary to limit the number of people who could attend the ceremony in person. However, everything was aired on Facebook, making Coronation accessible to many who may not have previously known about it.
In this year’s 88th edition of the Pierce County Daffodil Festival, 23 outstanding young women were chosen to represent Pierce County as goodwill ambassadors as well as princesses for the year 2021 behind computer screens. Each princess applicant presented a one-minute speech on this year’s Daffodil topic after a 10-minute panel interview via Zoom “Go after your star.
All of the young princesses are 3.2 GPA or higher high school seniors who participate in a variety of extracurricular activities. They will add a long list of volunteer work, activities, and public appearances to their schedules that will help Pierce County and the area they serve.

Ouellette believes that COVID won’t prevent the queen and court from visiting villages this year in order to meet people and share their unique charm and talents.

What is the path to daffodil princesshood?
We appreciate your desire to join the Daffodilian community. A $50 non-refundable initiation and administrative charge is required of applicants. Attendance at Daffodil Festival events, such as Princess Selections, Daffodil Festival Activities, Out of Town Parades, and General Membership Meetings, is encouraged for all Members. The Board of Directors must approve and the membership dues must be paid before membership is given.
What time does Sumner, Washington’s Daffodil Parade start?
The following is the parade schedule, per the organization’s website:

- at 2:30 p.m. Sumner
- Orting at five o’clock.
A pleasant spot to watch event will be held in Sumner in conjunction with the Daffodil Festival and Parade. For its first-ever “Street of Eats” event, the city is blocking off the downtown area to traffic and lining it up with 10 food trucks and a beer garden.
Prior to the parade’s arrival at 2:30 p.m., the “Street of Eats” event will begin at 12:00.

The actions of daffodil princesses
Twenty-three senior women from participating Pierce County High Schools make up the Daffodil Royal Court. The Princesses learn many priceless lessons and experiences during their year with the Festival, enhancing their public speaking abilities, tact, and composure as well as their self-confidence through the interactions they have with their local community.
The Daffodil Princesses continue to work throughout the summer as they attend numerous out-of-town parades as Pierce County Council-designated Official Ambassadors of Pierce County.

Through its purpose of enhancing our local communities, the Daffodil Festival has celebrated over 89 years in the wonderful state of Washington, fostering the spirit and growth of Pierce County. On Parade Day, the Grand Floral Street Parade typically passes through Tacoma, Puyallup, Sumner, and Orting in Pierce County. Since 1934, the Daffodil Parade has passed through our wonderful neighborhood every year with the exception of the years of war (1943, 1944, and 1945), as well as 2020 because of the global pandemic. As part of a collaboration with the Washington State Spring Fair last year, the Daffodil Festival launched its first-ever “stationary parade” to guarantee the security of our neighborhood’s residents and cherished parade participants. On April 9, 2022, we intend to reinstate the customary 4-City Grand Floral Parade.
Where is the Daffodil Parade in Tacoma?
The Procession starts at the TYC, which is close to the Point Defiance Ferry Terminal, and travels south along Tacoma’s waterfront to the Thea Foss Waterway. There are many lovely places to stay on dry land and watch the parade on the water.
Are the daffodils in Skagit Valley in bloom?
The annual Daffodil Festival, which takes place in March, is now officially hosted by the town of La Conner since 2015. Daffodils bloom in Skagit County fields one month before the more well-known tulips. Tulip crops are rotated annually, whereas daffodil crops are grown on a three-year cycle. The daffodil fields you will see in bloom have been there for three years.
In terms of flower festivals in the Pacific Northwest, the La Conner Daffodil Festival is a relative newcomer. In Pierce County, the long-running Daffodil Parade first took place in 1934. In 1984, the renowned Skagit Valley Tulip Festival got its start. Each year, April is when both of these activities take place. However, if you take a trip up to the Skagit Valley in northern Washington in March, you can view some of the beautiful yellow narcissus blossoms, sometimes known as daffodils, that cover over 500 acres (about 100 more than tulips!).
Don’t forget to get a bouquet of flowers from the local Kiwanis in La Conner. Dutch Master (the most popular variety in the world), Flower Carpet, and Standard Value are the three main narcissus kinds that flourish in Skagit Valley. Crop rotation for daffodils occurs every three years (in contrast to an every-year rotation for tulips). Daffodil plants are three years old, which is why you see them every year.
