On weekdays, early morning and late afternoon are the least crowded times. The weekend is busy. A: Can we ride our bikes on the fields, and are there any bike trails nearby?
Yes! Nearly every road has a shoulder to ride on and is beautiful and flat among the tulip fields. For routes, consult the Skagit County Bike Map.
A: The roads leading up to the fields will have signage prohibiting parking. Please use a parking area for safety reasons.
A: Dogs and other animals are not permitted in the fields or show gardens. The newest Tulip Garden is an exception. Dogs on leashes that behave nicely are welcome in Garden Rosalyn.
A: From Seattle, take I-5 North, and from Vancouver, BC, take I-5 South. Use the Tulip Festival map to choose your exit based on where you want to go and which fields you want to see. From I-5, you will be traveling west.
I’m a Canadian.
Can we re-enter the border with cut flowers? How about lightbulbs?
A: You are welcome to place cut tulip flowers along the border. However, because they are in the ground, bulbs cannot be purchased during the tulip festival, but they can be delivered to Canada in the fall.
What are Show Gardens, exactly? A: You really must go to both RoozenGaarde and Tulip Town! The grounds have more than a million spring bulbs planted. Both have an admission fee; however, Tulip Town tickets cannot be used at RoozenGaarde and vice versa. The gardens are off-limits to pets.
Since the early 1900s, tulips from the Skagit Valley have been grown here. Currently, the Washington Bulb Co., Inc/RoozenGaarde grows “field tulips.” The timing of the field tulips’ blooming is dependent on the weather in April. Visit our Facebook sites, phone the Tulip Festival office at 360.428.5959, or the BLOOM MAP to check on the status of the bloom. You will require a fresh map every year because tulip crops rotate.
A: The two gardens, RoozenGaarde and Tulip Town, offer free parking. Bradshaw Road has parking for Tulip Town. Beaver Marsh Road’s RoozenGaarde. On busy days, both feature overflow parking; flaggers will direct you. A few of the tulip fields are serviced by official, paid parking run by RoozenGaarde. Your official pay lot ticket stub is good for one entry to RoozenGaarde, and parking in designated lots is included with paid RoozenGaarde admission (display your ticket stub). Parking and admission must take place on the same day. Please take note that lots near the fields may close if it rains too much.
Some landowners impose parking fees. You cannot purchase entrance or additional parking with the money you pay.
Can I bring my drone to the festival of tulips? A: No, drones are not permitted in the fields or gardens.

Do I have to give RoozenGaarde credit if I publish images of the exhibition fields or garden? Yes, please sign and send the Tulip Festival Photo Release Form to the Roozengaarde (Washington Bulb Co.) office.

MOUNT VERON, Washington The Skagit Valley is once again covered with stunning fields of vibrant tulips and daffodils, signaling the arrival of spring in western Washington.
After the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival went virtual in 2020 due to the COVID-19 epidemic, this is the second year that guests are let back onto the fields for the festival.

It is tulip season! The popular annual Skagit Valley Tulip Festival in Washington will take place again in 2022, and tulip hotspots RoozenGaarde and Tulip Town will again welcome guests to see their stunning fields. Rosalyn Garden is a recent arrival on the tulip scene. The daffodils are in full bloom, and the tulips are coming. Online tickets are currently available. The celebration is held every day of April, seven days a week.
What you need to know about the 2022 tulip festival
This year, tickets for RoozenGaarde, Tulip Town, and Garden Rosalyn can be purchased in person or in advance online. However, farms are urging guests to purchase tickets in advance. As they discovered the previous year, it greatly aids in traffic management. Choose a day and time for your online ticket, and once you enter, you are free to remain as long as you wish.
The state has removed the mask requirement this year, but dogs and drones are still not permitted on farms.
The cost of admission to RoozenGaarde and Tulip Town remains basically unchanged from the previous year. Tickets for RoozenGaarde are $15 per person; children under 2 are admitted free. Ages 12 and above pay $16.29 for Tulip Town tickets; those aged 611 pay $7.60; and those under 5 are admitted free. Tickets for Garden Roslayn cost $13 per person. In addition to the admission fee, parking is available.
If the weather permits, a trolley trip is included with Tulip Town admission. Three acres of flowerbeds, a café with a beer and wine garden, and a sizable field for kite flying are also available (bring your own or buy one on-site).
In contrast, RoozenGaarde offers a five-acre display garden, 20 acres of daffodils, and 25 acres of tulips.
Tulip gardens grown in artistic shapes may be seen at Garden Roslayn, along with a duck pond home to various waterfowl.
Dressing for the weather
The tulips are always lovely, rain or shine. But bear in mind that this festival is an outdoor event, these are working farms, and ticket sales are final. Tickets are understandably non-refundable; otherwise, image the returns nightmare the farmers would experience. This year, however, you have up to 48 hours before your scheduled entry time to change the day and time of your visit.
Parents in the Northwest are aware that farms and spring may both bring mud. both jointly? You should pack all the necessary supplies and a ton of dry clothing.
You won’t see this anywhere else in the country
According to Washington State University’s Skagit County Extension, the Skagit Valley is home to three-quarters of the country’s commercial tulip farms. Skagit County grows more tulips and daffodils than any other county in the nation, on an area of more than 1,000 acres. There are a lot of flowers there.
Regardless of the numbers, the flower fields are stunning. You could drive 60 miles north from the Seattle region to Mount Vernon, which is floral nirvana, or you could take a flight to the Netherlands.
The best time to go
The fields are a brilliant yellow with daffodils before the tulips. Around the beginning of April, tulips start to bloom, and mid-April is usually when they reach their height. Mother Nature will ultimately determine that, so for updates, check the festival’s bloom status information.
Before midday on a weekday, reserve a ticket if you prefer less crowded times. The days with the worst weather are the ones that are least busy.
Tough times for tulip farmers
Every April, the festival draws about 300,000 people to Skagit Valley. The entire festival was abruptly postponed until 2020.
According to Brent Roozen, his farm generates between 80 and 90 percent of its annual revenue during the spring bloom. He is a third-generation tulip producer; his grandfather, William Roozen, founded RoozenGaarde after leaving Holland in 1947.
In order to comply with pandemic laws for the 2021 season, the farms reopened to the public with mask requirements, sanitizing stations, and a constrained capacity. The border with Canada was still only open for essential transit, but Americans who like seeing tulips got to enjoy the stunning scenery.
The Skagit Valley was then ravaged by unprecedented flooding in November. Two acres of field tulips were lost in Tulip Town, two miles to the west of RoozenGaarde.
According to Kristen Keltz, CEO of Spinach Bus Ventures, which manages Tulip Town, “Mother Nature packed a hit for us.”
This year, it will still be a fantastic experience. Just a tiny bit diverse from earlier years.
You may relax knowing that your festival ticket purchase this year will benefit small, family-run companies in Washington when you do. You’ll return home with a ton of Instagrammable pictures no matter what.
Snack time
Both farms have food available for purchase in case the troops go hungry. A concession stand serving burgers, hot dogs, kettle corn, and fudge is located at Roozengaarde.
Hot dogs, soups, local ice cream, speciality espresso drinks, and a beer and wine garden are available in Tulip Town’s cafe.
If amenities are important to you, keep in mind that the farms only have port-a-potties with hand-washing stations.
In-town dining
For grab-and-go deli products in town, we prefer the Skagit Valley Food Co-op (202 S. First St., Mount Vernon). You can get incredibly cheap burgers at The Chuckwagon Drive-In (800 N. Fourth St., Mount Vernon) while also enjoying the model train that runs through the dining area.

Flower strip also known as Bulb region or Lisse tulip fields
The Holland provinces, more specifically the region between the cities of Leiden and Haarlem, is home to the most well-known tulip fields close to Amsterdam. The Flower strip or Bulb region is the name of this 20-mile (32-km) section (Bollenstreek in Dutch). But to get your fill of aromatic flowers, you don’t even have to enter the park. Some of the Netherlands’ most exquisite flower fields can be seen near the Keukenhof Gardens. Additionally, there are a number of engaging ways to explore the flower strip because of its popularity. You can explore the tulip fields near Keukenhof Gardens on your own by choosing from the following options:
- There are many walking paths that wind through the vivid scenery. Locate them here.
- Alternately, you could rent a bike at the entrance to the Keukenhof Gardens (trailers, tandems, and children’s cycles are all available). View the various bicycle routes that take you by some of the Netherlands’ most exquisite flower fields. It is advised to reserve a bike in advance for all rentals.

Tulip picking garden
Real tulip picking farms can be found close to Keukenhof Gardens. In addition to the picking opportunity, they provide the ideal setting for family portraits in the midst of a Dutch tulip field. Such farms that accept guests during tulip season include The Tulip Barn, De Tulperij, Annemieke’s Picking Garden, Tulip Store Show Garden, and Pluktuin Noordwijkerhout.
Where to stay near the Lisse tulip fields
Now, let’s talk about where to stay close to the Flower Strip and the Keukenhof Gardens: It’s surprising how few hotels there are in and around Lisse. But fear not, there are many wonderful options. Our favorite is by far this one: Among the bulb fields is the meticulously renovated barn known as De Groene Bollenschuur.
The Keukenhof Gardens are nearby, and this delightful tiny house and this lovely bed and breakfast are in an ideal location to explore the nearby tulip fields.
We suggest staying at Noordwijk, a charming beach town close to the flower fields, if you’re seeking for a hotel nearby. The Vesper hotel, which also provides bike rental, is the place we’ve been eyeing for a while.
Places to visit nearby
You might spend a day in Haarlem or Leiden in addition to visiting the flower fields. Public transportation makes it simple to get to these cities and the nearby flower fields.
A must-visit if you have a car is the Gouda cheese market, which is held from April to September but may be a little further away. Conveniently, the event’s date falls during tulip season.
Head of Holland
The northernmost region of the North Holland Province is home to the so-called Kop van Holland.
This is a wonderful choice if you want to avoid the crowds and tour the Netherlands’ tulip fields. You may find a wide variety of spring flowers at the so-called Head of Holland in the province of North Holland. The nicest part is that you can keep these Dutch tulips all to yourself. The two tulip hotspots in this area are as follows:
- from Schagen to Den Helder along the west coast of the province. Particularly in and around the communities of Julianadorp and Anna Paulowna. One of the routes we took was that one. We hired bicycles and rode them from Schagen to Callantsoog through Schagerbrug and De Stolpen. It was a beautiful day, and the area around the village of De Stolpen in particular had some pretty outstanding scenery. Early April meant that not all flower fields were still in bloom, but the kids enjoyed some beach time at Callantsoog before we returned to our starting point.
- between Andijk, Enkhuizen, and Bovenkarpsel on the east coast.
When visiting one of the tulip-picking farms in this area, be sure to bring your picture-perfect basket. Just plunge in… figuratively speaking. The vibrant color palettes of Floratuin and Pluktuin Bakkum are difficult to resist.

The Anna Paulowna Flower Days are a local highlight (Hollands Kroon). Flowers can be found in the town’s mosaics, adorned streets, and bridges. Here is where you may find more details.

Where to stay in the Head of Holland
There aren’t many hotels in this area of the Netherlands because it’s peaceful and rural. But no worries, we’ve chosen the top choices close to the tulip fields:
Spend your nights in Stolpen at this lovely vacation home. There are local bike rentals. The house is surrounded by tulips and the sea and has been tastefully adorned.
We heartily suggest the Blooming Hotel, where we stayed. It’s ideally situated in the middle of nature and close to the bulb fields. The hotel has bikes for rent starting at 11:00. While it’s wonderful to discover the breathtaking scenery close to the hotel, seeing the tulip fields requires traveling to Schagen, where you can rent bikes.
You could visit along with a day excursion to Volendam, Edam, or the Alkmaar cheese market. Alternately, extend your journey by two days by taking the boat from Den Helder to the Wadden Isle of Texel, where you may explore the untouched landscapes of the Dunes of Texel National Park.
Noordoostpolder
The rural area surrounding Emmeloord in Flevoland is another lesser-known location for tulip fields in the Netherlands. This Dutch province was once an inland sea before it was recovered. This geographically interesting region is still below sea level. Additionally, it is sprinkled with tulip fields, which results in a brilliantly vibrant carpet. In the spring, there aren’t many other tourists at Noordoostpolder, unless they’re Dutch people on a day excursion. You may get more details and a driving itinerary through the area here.
In Marknesse, there is a tulip farm called The Tulip Experience Field where you are free to take as many photos of the lovely Dutch tulips as you like. But Hanneke’s Pluktuin also has a lot of color to brighten the wintertime. This in itself is a good enough enough to pack a picnic blanket and your favorite whirling dress.
The Tulip Festival is a popular local event. Visitors can go along a designated tulip path on foot, by bicycle, or by car, passing some of the Netherlands’ most beautiful tulip fields. More information is available here.
The Noordoostpolder Tulip Festival will occur in 2022 from April 16 until May 8.
Where to stay near the Noordoostpolder tulip fields
Again, Noordoostpolder is a somewhat rural place, therefore there aren’t many hotels there. Nevertheless, we came across this hidden treasure, the Boetiek Hotel Kampen, close to the excitement. Additionally, we were drawn to this magnificent Airbnb, which is a lavish house boat.
Just over an hour separates Noordoostpolder and Amsterdam. To explore the area, a car will undoubtedly be necessary. While you’re there, you might as well combine your trip to the lovely flower fields with a detour to gorgeous Giethoorn so you can spend the remainder of the day boating along the mesmerizing canals there.
