A: Although there are some positive aspects of tulip poplars, there are also enough negative aspects that they are not one of my top picks for a landscape tree.
On the bright side, tulip poplars, sometimes known as tulip trees, are gorgeous to behold in blossom, a native species that bees find attractive, and they grow well as timber trees.
On the negative side, they grow quickly and become too large for a typical yard. In less than ten years, tulip poplars can grow up to 20 feet tall and nearly that broad, eventually reaching 70 to 80 feet tall and 50 feet wide.
The fact that they grow quickly and have weak wood, which makes them more likely to break off branches during storms than many other tree species, is a significant problem in my opinion.
They are also prone to aphid infestations, which don’t harm the trees but do release a misty liquid waste known as “aphid rain,” which can be quite a pain if you’re trying to sit or walk underneath.
Practically speaking, I’ve heard owners of them frequently lament the “messiness” caused by the enormous petals that fall after bloom and once more when the numerous big leaves fall in the fall. As the tree becomes bigger, there are also more leaves falling.
Due to the size of their roots, tulip poplars can make it difficult to cultivate a lawn or other plants next to them.
Tulip poplars, in my opinion, are beautiful to look at in wooded areas and other expansive, natural settings, but there are many other better large-tree landscape options unless you have a large yard and are comfortable with the roots, dropping petals and leaves, possibility of aphids, and limb-dropping in ice storms.

How can I tell if it’s winter on my tulip poplar?
It is simple to recognise the tuliptree (Liriodendron tulipifera) by its leaves, blooms, fruits, and seeds, but more difficult when you are just given access to twigs and bark.
When winter is still young, the tree will be covered in erect, drying fruits with flower-like shapes. The base of each one is where a seed cluster of samaras is connected “bloom.
The fruits dry out over time, and the samaras either fall to the ground below or blow away from the tree. They have a rounded ski-like appearance with a bulge near the toe.
The reddish-brown twigs have alternate leaf buds and one huge terminal bud that resembles a duck’s bill. They are less than half an inch thick and reddish-brown in colour. Your main indicator that it’s a tuliptree is this shape. I’ve read that until the threat of frost has passed, this bud protects the developing leaves, which subsequently spread out like wings. Also take note of the stipule scar that encircles the twig in place of the leaf.
In Schenley Park, I have observed both deep-red and reddish-dark-gray terminal buds. In the top image, dark grey is visible; in the one below, deep red:
Another matter is identifying the tree based on its bark. The trunk’s form provides the best hint. These trees grow so quickly that they have no lower branches and are extremely straight. Because they cannot tolerate shadow, tuliptrees direct all of their energy during their surge towards the sun towards the trunk. They leave a large upside-down smile on the bark where the lower branches used to be after dropping them along the route. This is apparent on young trees whose bark has lighter-colored, flat-topped ridges, as shown here:
Even if the smiles are harder to discern and the ridges appear less flat-topped on elder trees, you can still see horizontal line breaks in the bark:
Young tuliptrees have crowns that resemble candle flames when they reach the top of the canopy, much as they do when their leaves turn yellow in the fall. In late November, they shed their leaves first from the bottom, leaving a few fluttering ones at the top “Candles are extinguishing.
They may have earned the nickname “yellow-poplar” because to their fluttering yellow leaves. However, the tuliptree is not a poplar. It belongs to the magnolia family and will bloom in the spring with lovely flowers.
Are tulip trees and tulip poplars the same thing?
