When Do Saguaro Cactus Flowers Bloom

Phenology is the study of periodic events in the life cycles of plants and animals, such as springtime bird migration or the time of year when saguaro cactus bloom and bear fruit. When saguaros reach a height of around 2.2 metres (7 feet), or when they are 30-65 years old, they attain reproductive maturity and produce their first flowers. The latter two weeks of April are when saguaro flowering starts, and the last week of May through the first week of June is when it reaches its height.

Winter rain, longer days, and warmer temperatures in the spring all contribute to the saguaro’s blooming. Late June or early July is usually when the fruit turns a deep red colour. In anticipation of the summer rains in July and August, they scatter countless numbers of tiny seeds.

Saguaro Flowers

Saguaro flowers are typically found close to the apex of the cactus’ stems and arms. They have a diameter of around 3 inches (8 cm) and are white in hue. They smell strongly, somewhat like ripe melons.

Flower pollination

The Mexican long-tongued bat and the lesser long-nosed bat pollinate the blooms at night. Bees and birds like the white-winged dove fertilise the flowers during the day.

Saguaro Fruit

The blossoms develop into brilliant crimson fruit after being fertilised. The fruit splits open to reveal luscious red pulp as it ripens. Up to 2000 tiny black seeds can be found in each berry.

Uses of the fruit

Many desert animals rely on ripe fruit as an excellent source of nutrition and moisture. Finches, woodpeckers, doves, bats, tortoises, javelinas, and coyotes are a few of these creatures. People consume saguaro fruit as well. Since they have inhabited the desert, Tohono O’odham Indians have been gathering the fruit.

Less than a day is spent in bloom on saguaro flowers. They start operating at night and are open all day the following day. They only have that brief period to entice an animal to pollinate them.

Do saguaro cacti flower annually?

Possibly while travelling through Tucson during the past few weeks, you observed that our beloved saguaros have adopted new hairstyles.

The bulbous green nubs on their heads are actually buds that will soon open into stunning saguaro flowers at this time of year, so don’t think they’re growing baby avocados at the top of their heads (you’ll still have to pay extra for guac, sorry).

Here are some details on these white dazzlers and why they are so significant to the Sonoran Desert that you might find interesting.

1. Early May to early June mark the peak flowering period.

But don’t be deceived by that period of time. According to this Arizona Daily Star story by Doug Kreutz, saguaro flowers can be found for more than half the year. This year, blooms have been observed as early as mid-April, while they weren’t seen until November last year.

2. They live a brief life.

According to John Wiens, a gardener at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, saguaro blooms normally bloom at dusk and remain open until about midday the following day. The bloom will be over by the time the flower begins to wilt in the afternoon.

3. A single saguaro can bloom up to 100 times in a single season.

4. They receive some assistance from their pals.

The pollination mechanism for the saguaro bloom depends on a variety of desert-dwelling creatures, such as bees, moths, hummingbirds, and white-winged doves. These animals pick up pollen as they consume nectar from the bloom, which is then carried to and deposited in other flowers.

5. But the bat is their lifelong best friend.

Because they co-evolved, smaller long-nosed bats and saguaro flowers are a marriage made in pollination heaven. As these lovely blooms blossom at night, this is the perfect moment for bats to utilise their brush-tipped tongues to collect copious amounts of honey from the flower. These blooms’ stark white visibility also makes them simple for bats to identify as they fly through the gloomy desert sky.

What month does Arizona’s cactus bloom?

Despite the fact that wetter years result in more flowers, they bloom nicely almost every year. In April, you can view the widest variety of spring-blooming plants. Early May sees the blooming of the numerous prickly pears, and mid-May to mid-June sees the blooming of the saguaros, continuing the cactus display.

Saguaro flowers are breathtaking, but not because of their exquisite blossoms. The enormous saguaro cactus in the Sonoran Desert produces one of the most exquisite flowers every spring. The nighttime blooming of the huge, white flowers with yellow centres is followed the next day by their closure. Birds, insects, and even bats pollinate them. We honour the Tohono O’odham People, who have a long-standing relationship with the saguaro through an annual fruit harvest, as the traditional owners of the lands that make up Saguaro National Park.

The park has experienced an increase in temperature of roughly 2°F over the previous century. Many people question whether the warmer weather is forcing flowers to blossom earlier than usual, which could throw the saguaros’ relationship with some pollinators out of whack.

Saguaro National Park launched a citizen science initiative in 2017 to investigate the phenology of saguaro flowers. Using a digital camera mounted on top of a 30 foot long “selfie stick,” our interns and volunteers venture out into the desert every day to capture the buds, blooms, and fruit of more than 50 saguaros. In order to better understand changes over time, we will correlate flowering dates with weather observations and historical data. We take great pride in the diversity of our volunteers, interns, and Next Gen rangers, who get support from the Friends of Saguaro National Park and the Western National Parks Association. They are all a part of the Latin Heritage Internship Program.

When does a cactus flower?

Cacti are often blooming plants. As a result, practically all cactus species have the ability to flower when they are grown and in the proper environment. How old your cactus plant is and how well you take care of it will determine whether or not it blooms. Some cacti plants flower when they are very young, but others won’t bloom until they are at least 30 years old.

Then, how frequently do cactus flowers bloom? Cacti plants typically bloom at least once each year, while wetter years could result in multiple flowering times. The majority of cacti species bloom in the spring when the climate is nearly ideal. In April, you may witness the widest variety of spring-flowering cacti species. Some species, like the prickly pears cactus, bloom brightly in early May, while others continue into May. Most saguaros bloom between mid-May and mid-June.

What is the name of the saguaro flower?

The Sonoran Desert, which is located in the American Southwest and north-west Mexico, is indicated by the saguaro cactus (Cereus giganteus). These old desert monarchs guard this tough environment noted for its extremes of temperature and precipitation as ancient sentinels. Long before the saguaros started to populate this warm, arid landscape some 10,000 years ago, there were people living in this area.

Height or size of the cactus species

Every form of cacti has its own rate of growth, and there have been more than 300 genera and 3000 species identified.

To determine how much growth the species produces annually, we would need to study it for a number of years.

For instance, compared to barrel varieties, columnar types like the saguaro cactus grow taller. Older Golden Barrel cacti (Echinocactus platyacanthus) can reach heights of 8.2 feet (2.5 metres) and 5 feet (1.5 metres), respectively.

A Saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigiantea) of a comparable age (about 100 years) can grow to a height of 15 to 16 feet (4.6 metres). The oldest Saguaro cactus ever measured, according to the National Park Service, rises more than 78 feet (24 metres) into the air.

The cactus can grow up to 8 inches (20 cm) per year, depending on its height and the growing environment (Drezner, 2003).

Regrettably, little research has been done on the age-size relationships of other cactus species. Since the Saguaro bloom is the state flower of Arizona and the cactus is protected, the Saguaro cactus is the subject of the majority of studies. The fact that the species is among the oldest and largest ever discovered on earth has also attracted a lot of attention.

Precipitation received

In addition to species, another element that affects cactus size is the amount of precipitation that cacti receive in their environment.

For instance, Pachycereus pringlei, which inhabits the western Sonoran coast and the Sonaran Desert’s driest regions like Baja California and receives little more than 3 inches of precipitation annually, develops exceedingly slowly.

In contrast, cacti from more humid habitats, such Opuntias or prickly pears from non-desert regions of South America, grow swiftly and have the potential to outgrow their surroundings.

Number of areoles

The quantity of areoles (plural: areola) also serves as a proxy for the age of the cactus.

A cluster of thorns (cactus-adapted leaves), blooms, and even a new branch or “arm” may sprout in an areola.

Less than a year old thorns are often reddish in colour. The population increases column by column, with younger people at the top than the bottom.

Number of arms

The quantity of thorny “arms” sprouting off the main stem of columnar cacti can also serve as a proxy for the cactus’ age.

A Saguaro, for instance, must be at least 70 years old before it starts to sprout arms. It takes a saguaro at least 100 years to have one arm that is completely grown. It is most likely older than 150 years if there are multiple arms and blossoms.

However, other cactus species, like the Golden Barrel cacti, do not have branches.

What causes the saguaros to bloom so profusely?

In the spring of 2021, people of the Sonoran Desert saw an incredibly rare occurrence: Saguaro blooms were literally bursting out everywhere. Normally, saguaros bloom in the spring. When they occur, the blooms are typically restricted to the mature limbs or the crown at the very top of the main body. However, following an out-of-season bloom in the fall of 2020, saguaro flowers began to bloom in May 2021 along the length of the main stems and arms, and remarkably, even on small buds (“nubbins). In addition to years of regional drought, the summer of 2020 delivered Tucson its warmest summer and the second-dryest monsoon on record, leading some seasoned observers to surmise that the exceptional bloom was a stress reaction. However, the lengthier climate record might also include some intriguing hints.

Don Swann, a biologist with Saguaro National Park, claims that a significant increase in recruitment from the 1960s to the early 1990s indicates that many saguaros in the park are beginning to reach reproductive age. But during the past 25 years or so, recruitment has sharply decreased, concurrent with a prolonged drought. Some young saguaros were discovered in the park during the 2020 saguaro census, mostly in areas where the soils likely retain more moisture than other areas.

In fact, as we understand more, the significance of soil moisture for plant productivity seems to increase. How moist is soil, then?

How much water is available for plants to use is determined by the moisture level of the soil. Compared to monthly or even seasonal precipitation, it functions on a longer time horizon. Simply put, the soil serves as a water bank. The amount that plants can grow in arid areas is also constrained by soil moisture, similar to how your bank account restricts what you can buy. Plants utilise the water that is absorbed by their roots from the earth, not the rain. We can determine how much precipitation is actually accessible to plants by calculating water balance. We start by deducting runoff, drainage, and evapotranspiration from the total amount of precipitation. Plants can use the residual water that is buried in the soil.

Right of that, the amount of soil moisture is greater than what plants require to survive. It fails to satisfy that requirement to the left.

The graph above depicts the association between soil moisture and plant productivity over a 20-year period at a location on the Cactus Forest Loop Drive for the month of April. The soil-moisture readings “explain 88 percent of the variability in plant productivity,” according to the R2 value of 0.88. Relationships with other climate factors like temperature and precipitation are not as robust.

In this situation, plant productivity in April is closely related to how much moisture is retained in the soil during that month, which is the equilibrium of what collected over winter and what was already used in the spring prior to the month of April.

Saguaros and other long-lived plants respond to long-term conditions.

compared to something like an annual brome, whose full life cycle takes place in a single year. This is so that the current year’s plants can grow because of the conditions from previous years. Plant reproduction is an expensive process, just like it is for mammals. Flowers and seeds that carry the energy required for seedling germination require energy to create. Even after reaching maturity, long-lived organisms may require several years of resource accumulation before they may reproduce.

Could it be that, like many tree species, saguaros require a few good years to accumulate the reserves required for a masting event (huge seed production)? Even though April 2021 was noticeably dry, 2019 and 2020 were much above the “pivot point where the crucial water amount needed to sustain average vegetative condition is met,” as shown in the image above (this is akin to the 8 glasses of water per day typically needed for optimal human function). Therefore, despite the fact that April 2021 was exceptionally dry, the foundation for the magnificent bloom in 2021 may have been laid in earlier years.

We don’t yet have conclusive answers. However, the Sonoran Desert Network’s collaboration with the Climate Analyzer will enable park management to ascertain whether or not the climatic conditions that produced this year’s bloom will persist in the future. The Climate Analyzer can be configured to send a notification if climate conditions comparable to those that lead up to this bloom—or any other ecological anomaly—are found in the future by categorising it as a major event. Following such occurrences might help identify whether the bloom is significantly influenced by the climate and, more importantly, which climate variables are crucial (hint: in this case, it might be April soil moisture!).

What occurs next will determine whether this current reproductive profusion leads to broad saguaro recruitment. The key to producing a cohort of saguaros is early summer rainfall, followed by a prolonged cooler and wetter period of a few of years. We are aware of this thanks to long-term monitoring initiatives like the annual saguaro census conducted in Saguaro National Park.
