A: I have some alliums that I would like to relocate to a bed of other alliums that are flourishing outside. Do I have to wait until September to do that, or can I do it now?
A: Alliums are summer-dormant bulbs that blossom late in the spring. These can be moved, and the best time to do it is just as they start to fall dormant after finishing their blooming cycle.
I’d hold off at least until the leaves begin to turn yellow. That indicates that the majority of the bulb’s “recharging” is complete. The foliage’s function is to absorb sunlight and create the plant sugars that the bulb stores to grow and bloom the following year using water and chlorophyll. If you remove the foliage too soon, this recharge will be interrupted.
The drawback of waiting until fall is that you won’t be able to pinpoint the location of the bulbs. The foliage will have withered and become brown at that point. You could therefore mistakenly dig into the bulb and kill it if you don’t label the location.
You can find the bulbs by digging just before the foliage entirely turns brown. Dig up the entire bulb and plant it again right away in the new site at the same depth (preferably, around two and a half times as deep as the bulb’s length). Before transplanting, remove the foliage. No immediate requirement for fertilizer or irrigation.

Are allium bulbs portable?
Post-bloom maintenance for alliums is quite simple. Simply continue to water the plants sparingly until they start to shrivel and turn yellow. At this point, you have the option of either dividing the plants or cutting them all the way to the ground.
Divide allium bulbs every three to four years. Simply use a shovel to dig around the plant and lift the bulbs out. You should see a group of bulbs that you may gently separate with your hands. Replant a few in the same location, and immediately transplant the others to different sites.
It’s considerably simpler to take care of allium bulbs that you don’t wish to divide. When the foliage starts to fade, simply trim it back, and in the fall, mulch the soil with 2 to 3 inches (5-7.5 cm) of material. In the spring, remove the mulch to allow room for fresh growth.
When can bulbs be dug up and replanted?
When the foliage has sufficiently faded down, in the summer or fall is the ideal time to transplant spring bulbs. Flowering spring bulbs use their foliage to store energy for the blooms of the following year. Therefore, before attempting to relocate the bulbs, the plants must be allowed to organically die back to the ground.
Wait until the end of the fall, again until the leaf has died back, if you need to move summer flowering plants like canna or dahlia. These can be moved to a new position in warmer climates, but in cooler areas, now is the time to dig them up and store them for the upcoming planting season.
When may I lift bulbs of allium?
Taller people can need assistance when exposed. After the flowers have faded, let the plant with them until they disintegrate because they make for wonderful winter interest. Some gardeners collect the seedheads and dry them so they can be used as home decor.
Allium bulbs can stay in the garden for multiple seasons. When planting new plants, try to keep in mind where you already put bulbs to prevent damaging those areas.
How to propagate alliums
In a few years, allium bulbs will grow in number. You may occasionally see the white bulbs being pushed out of the ground. Carefully pull the bulbs and gently peel out the offsets in late autumn or very early spring to replant them directly into the ground.
Allium can be grown from seed by leaving the flowerheads on the plant and harvesting the ripe seed to sow right away. Keep in mind that starting alliums from seed requires patience because it takes years to produce a flowering plant.

A fungus called allium white rot prevents the growth of other alliums and onions. Clear and burn the infected plant material, and stay away from growing alliums in the same spot for at least five years, to prevent recurring infections.

How are alliums replanted?
Leeks, leeks, and other plants in the allium genus. In backyard vegetable gardens, these eatable plants flourish. By growing the plants indoors in late winter and then moving them outside to the garden, you can get a head start on the summer gardening season since onions and leeks are frequently grown from seed in the spring. Two to four weeks before to the last anticipated spring frost in your location, transplant allium plants that you have grown from seed or purchased.

Are alliums movable in green?

I wouldn’t attempt to transfer any alliums “I informed Elizabethsflowers that they are in the green (i.e., when they are active and expanding). The chance of severing the stem or foliage—which will nourish the underlying bulb as it grows and also when it naturally withers while still attached to the bulb—is too high. This procedure is simply too perilous due to the architecture of tall alliums (like those in the backdrop of the photo and their botanical relation Nectaroscordum siculum, foreground), and they will become much more unhappy if cut off from their food source. Tulips, narcissus, and many other smaller bulbs are more forgiving. But forget about lilies. Even more temperamental than alliums, they are. Regarding the browning foliage, this is characteristic of many of the large alliums; in some cases, the leaves aren’t even in fantastic shape at bloom time. Because of this, it is advisable to grow alliums with a suitable companion plant “beneath them. Perennial geraniums, such as G. macrorrhizum, are my preference for hiding this allium disadvantage.
Where Elizabethsflower’s tree once stood is probably very dry, and since bulbs need moisture during their active growing phases to swell up (and then need to be drier later in the season when ripening), she might be able to help them along this spring and until they begin to die back by giving them a good, deep drink. When the green start to emerge and grow, bulbs can also profit from being fed. When the spring greens begin to emerge, I feed my garlic, which is an Allium.
The best time to relocate any alliums, in my opinion, is in the fall or very early, before they have any topgrowth the following spring, advises Elizabethsflowers. I prefer the fall since there are fewer must-dos on the list and I’m more likely to complete them. I need to go outside right away and replant all the Narcissus I dug up and moved to other locations.

If you are planting many bulbs at once, dig a trench instead of a hole for each bulb. To avoid a dotted appearance, I like to plant in good drifts rather than in twos and threes.
In dense soil, cover the bottom of the pit or trench with a 5 cm (2 in) layer of grit (or decomposed compost).
As a general guideline, make sure the hole is at least twice as deep as the bulb, and space each bulb out by at least three times its width. This is roughly 10-15cm (4-6in) deep and 10-15cm (4-6in) apart for small- and medium-sized bulbs (such as “Purple Sensation”). Larger kinds (like “Purple Rain”) require more room because of their considerably larger flower heads and leaves, thus they should be planted at least 20-30 cm (8 in.-1 ft.) apart. For their magnificent heads, giants like “Globemaster” need to be spaced 30-45cm (12-18in) apart.
If you’re working with really heavy dirt, add roughly one-third grit and two-thirds soil to the bottom of the trench or hole to fill it in. After that, cover the bulbs with soil. After planting, use your hands to level the ground.

The same depth at which bulbs are planted in the ground should also be used for potted bulbs. With the larger bulbs, this might not always be possible, but make sure that a large bulb has at least 4 cm (1 1/2 in) of compost underneath it. The number of plants will depend on the variety being planted and the spacing, which should be the same as in the ground.
