For longer than the brief period they are in bloom during their season, many of us who adore peony yearn to use them as cut flowers. How could my friend’s granny celebrate Thanksgiving with a peony bouquet? How can the cut flower enthusiast help the peony season last longer?

You must first understand when to cut the peonies. The time must be exact. According to Wilma Jackson of the Sunny Dale Spring Peony Farm in Valley Center, Kansas, you should cut the blooms when the buds are showing some color and are soft like a marshmallow if you want to preserve a peony for proper bloom and attain a vase life of five to ten days. To ensure that you are cutting peonies at the right developmental stage, you must check them multiple times a day while they are in bloom.
The peony should be kept dry after being cut. To stop water loss, Michigan State University Extension advises removing the leaves off the stem. The next step is to completely wrap the peony in clear plastic wrap, from stem to bud, and secure both ends. The covering should be sealed to prevent moisture loss from the flowers. If you’re going to keep them in a frost-free refrigerator, a good tight seal is essential.
For up to three months, keep them horizontal. (Or, till Thanksgiving, as my friend claims. She put her grandmother’s in wet newspapers.) Cut the stem before placing them in tepid water in a cool room after removing them from their cold storage. The peony should bloom for about a week after being properly watered.

Gathering Your Peonies
- Cut the peony blossoms while they are at their best! You can’t use any peony for this procedure to work. The peony with the best bloom for this method is still mostly closed, but not tightly closed. The peony should feel similar to a marshmallow when you touch it.
- Remove about 16 stems from the peony below the blossom. DO NOT PUT THE PEONY IN WATER; rather, follow these instructions right away! If you don’t have time to accomplish this, merely submerge the tops of the stems in the water to avoid getting the stems wet.
- Give the peony a good, clean cut with a pair of sharp garden shears or a florist knife. Ensure the peony is free of dirt and insects, and remove all of the leaves (specifically ants).
Mold is more likely to grow on a stem if there is dirt or if a sizable portion of the stem is damp.
- On a flat surface, spread out the plastic wrap. You will need around 20″ of plastic wrap for a 16″ peony.
- The peony should be cleaned and placed on the plastic wrap. On the plastic wrap, you can arrange the peonies alone or in groups that face opposing directions.
- In the plastic wrap, roll the peonies up. You want to wrap them so that the flower is totally sealed and the stem tips and flowers are entirely covered.
- Put the peonies that have been wrapped up in a resealable bag. As much air as you can get out of the bag.
- Lay the bag of peony flowers in a horizontal position inside the refrigerator. The challenging issue is how much space this can take up in your fridge.
Reviving the Peonies
- Allow the peonies two days to rebloom before using or enjoying them. Start by taking the peonies out of the refrigerator.
- Trim the bottom of the peony neatly, about 2 inches.
- Put the peony in a tidy vase and fill it with warm water. The peony will start to warm up and open in about two days. It can take a few days for the peony to open up as it was closed when you cut it.
- Change the water once again the following day, and if you choose, give the peony some flower food.
Can peony petals be smoked?

For more than 10 years, I’ve been producing it in my workshop, and it’s really well-liked.
There are hydrangeas, rosebushes, and lavender plants in many yards if you want to make your own natural petal confetti. When in season, delphinium spires are easily found at the florist. Simply gather six of any one of these stems together with an elastic band, hang upside down in your airing cupboard for at least a week. Can peony flowers be dried?
The simplest and least expensive way to preserve peony is air drying. Cut stems at least 6 inches long, removing the bottom leaves, and let them air dry. If you want to make a bouquet right away, arrange the flowers and trim the stems to your preferred length, but don’t gather more than three stems together at once to ensure that the flowers dry evenly.
Hang the flowers upside-down from a nail, dowel, or hanger after wrapping a rubber band or a length of twine with a loop at one end around each stem or bunch. Alternatively, affix the rubber band or string to the hanger using a clothespin. Ample space should be left between each flower to encourage airflow. The optimum place is a cool, dry chamber, such as an unused closet, where the drying flowers can receive little to no sunshine.
Peony varieties with double or bomb petals air-dry more quickly than those with single petals because hanging singles upside down causes the petals to curl inward, giving the dried flower a closed appearance. Allow peonies that have been flipped upside down to dry for one to two weeks or until they are no longer limp.
How is white peony tea made?
We advise using loose leaf tea rather than tea bags to make the best white peony tea. Compared to the crushed pieces found in tea bags, loose teas often are of higher quality, have better flavor, and provide more health benefits. For the purest flavor, go for organic white tea that is free of chemicals and pesticides.
- Start by rapidly swirling hot water into your teapot and cup to warm them. Throw away the water.
- For every 8 ounces of water, use 1 teaspoon of organic white peony tea leaves.
- Place the tea infuser in your teacup after adding the tea leaves.
- Water should be heated at between 165 and 175 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid using boiling water while making white peony tea since the delicate flavor will be lost.
- Tea leaves should be steeped for two to three minutes in hot water in your teacup. The flavors will get more intense the longer the steeping period is.
- Take out and reserve the tea leaves. Add sugar to taste and relish.
Each brew of white peony leaves yields 3 to 5 infusions. For every infusion, extend the steeping period by about 30 seconds.
Do peony offer therapeutic qualities?
