What Soil PH Makes Hydrangeas Blue

The chemistry of the soil, not what is sprayed to the blooms, is what determines how coloured hydrangea blossoms turn out to be. The colour of the blossoms will increase with soil alkalinity. How are hydrangeas guaranteed to be blue?

Grow the hydrangea plant in 5.2–5.5 pH soil to promote blue hydrangea blossoms. Applying Soil Acidifier at the rate recommended on the package will lower the pH if your soil is more alkaline. Applying an acidic organic mulch, such as pine needles or pine bark, can also lower soil pH (slower).

Even if there is a lot of aluminium in the soil, blue flowers will be very difficult to grow in soil that has a naturally high pH (alkaline). Aluminum is frequently “locked up” in alkaline soil, rendering it unavailable to the plant. (However, gorgeous pink hydrangeas can be grown!)

A gardener from Lincolnton, Georgia, where I was raised, asked me my first enquiry as the agricultural and natural resource Extension agent for Columbia County. Her springtime planting of pink hydrangeas turned blue blossoms by the time summer rolled around.

She knew how important it was to add lime to the soil to change the pH level and, in turn, the hydrangeas’ colour. She required details regarding the type of lime and application technique, though.

The greatest gardening starts with a soil sample, as any representative from the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension will inform you. Knowing the nutrients and pH level of the soil from a soil sample takes the guesswork out of how much lime or fertiliser is required.

At a pH of 6 to 6.5, the majority of important plant nutrients are easier to obtain. Plants may be unable to take up nutrients from the soil if the pH is either too high or too low. Because of the chemistry of the soil, the plant cannot access or absorb the nutrients. Numerous symptoms can accompany this issue, but in the case of hydrangeas, the bloom colour alters.

The presence or lack of aluminium compounds in hydrangea flowers causes colour variance. Blue colour indicates the presence of aluminium. When present in modest amounts, the colour might range from pink to blue. The blossoms are pink if there is no metal present.

Because soil pH affects the availability of aluminium in the soil, flowers’ colours are indirectly affected. Blue flowers are produced when the soil is acidic (pH 5.5 or below), as aluminium is more readily available to the roots.

Because Georgia’s soils tend to be acidic, the majority of hydrangea flowers are blue. Aluminum is less available in soil that has a pH of 7.0 or above, which is considered to be alkaline. Usually pink, the blooms in this soil are.

I advised my gardeners to spread one cup of dolomitic lime over ten square feet of soil and water it in to restore the hydrangeas to their former pink colour. However, it can take a year using this technique to detect a noticeable improvement in blossom colour.

By soaking the soil in liquid, changes can be made more quickly. In one gallon of water, dissolve one spoonful of hydrated lime. In March, April, and May, soak the surrounding soil with the solution. The solution should not be applied on the leaves as it may harm them.

There are numerous brands that sell dolomitic limes, including Pennington, Greenacres, Lilly Miller, and Green Earth, among others. Additionally, there are numerous hydrated lime product brands available, including Hi-Yield, Bonide, Hoffman, and Lees. All are wise decisions.

Although homeowners in Georgia frequently deal with acidic soil, alkaline soils do exist. Distribute half a cup of wettable sulphur per 10 square feet and water it in to gradually turn pink flowers blue.

Again, liquid soil drenches are a quicker approach to effect the transformation. In the months of March, April, and May, saturate the soil around the plant with a solution of one tablespoon of aluminium sulphate in one gallon of water. Make sure to keep the solution off of the leaves.

If you want to plant hydrangeas in fall, you need first improve the soil where you plan to do so. Apply 50 pounds of decomposed organic material per 10 square feet and thoroughly work it with a tiller or shovel into the top 8 to 12 inches of soil.

Create a hole for the plant that is twice as large as the root ball. Avoid planting too deeply. Make sure the root ball’s top is parallel to or just above the soil’s surface. After planting, give the area plenty of water and add 3 to 5 inches of mulch.

Throughout the growing season, hydrangeas react to numerous sparing doses of fertiliser. They are thirsty plants that work best in landscape zones with modest water use.

Do hydrangeas turn blue from coffee grounds?

  • Maintain low amounts of phosphorus, moderate levels of nitrogen, and high levels of potassium in the soil in order to make sepals bluer.

But it might never return to being bright pink. It takes time for ground-planted hydrangea flowers to change colour. It won’t happen overnight. Changing the hue and obtaining particularly dark shades can take several months.

The Fastest Way to Turn Your Hydrangea Flowers Blue

You can start using a soil acidifier amendment right away if your hydrangea is in a location alongside other acid-loving plants. Your soil’s pH will be adjusted over time by an organic soil acidifier. Typically, soil acidifiers consist of a powder or granule that is sprinkled on top of the soil and then hydrated. Observe the application guidance provided on the package.

In addition to applying a soil acidifier, watering your hydrangea with a fertiliser for acid-loving plants would be beneficial. At the garden centre, we sell Color Me Blue and Color Me Pink Hydrangea Feed.

It takes a long time for your soil to naturally go closer towards the acidic side of the pH scale. The soil in the region you want to acidify might benefit from the addition of coffee grinds, broken eggshells, peat moss, evergreen needles, and citrous peels. Although the process is time-consuming and will take some time to produce noticeable benefits, it does work.

Alternately, if your hydrangea is close to plants that require alkaline soil, moving it or the other plants to a different location is probably your best option. For the quickest results, apply an acidifier to make the soil more acidic before planting your hydrangea. Throughout the growing season, you’ll need to keep adding soil acidifiers once a month to retain the blue blossoms and produce darker shades.

Concrete Can Affect the Color of Your Hydrangea

You might have a harder difficulty getting the blossoms on your hydrangea to turn blue and stay that way if it’s growing close to a concrete driveway or sidewalk. This is due to lime’s widespread use in concrete as a binding agent. Lime increases the alkalinity of the neighbouring soil by raising its pH.

You can test the soil where you intend to plant your hydrangea if it is not close to concrete or if you haven’t planted it yet. In Iowa, soils are generally very alkaline, but if you want to check for yourself, perform a quick test at home using vinegar. To test if your soil is alkaline or acidic, add some dirt to a bucket and add 1/2 cup of vinegar. If it fizzes, your soil needs acidifiers to colour your hydrangea blossoms blue.

Use apple cider vinegar diluted with water (20 parts water to 1 part vinegar). Water the plants at the base of them. The vinegar-and-water mixture might burn the leaves, so try to avoid getting it on them.

The ability to transform the colour of hydrangea blossoms from pink to blue is another trick apple cider vinegar has up its sleeve. In alkaline soil, hydrangea blossoms will be pink; in acidic soil, they will turn blue.

Give the acid-loving plants a treat by combining apple cider vinegar and water. Or abruptly switch the hue of your hydrangeas from pink to blue. Oh, and what about pearls dissolved in vinegar?

Pearls were dissolved in vinegar and consumed by Cleopatra to display her wealth, likely making the acidic beverage the most expensive beverage ever. Speaking of bittersweet.

How can I organically increase the acidity of my soil?

To provide acidity and give ericaceous plants a little boost, using an organic liquid feed like a compost tea produced from ericaceous compost may be helpful.

Use Acidifying Liquid Feeds Such as Vinegar/ Lemon etc. (In Moderation).

Finally, you can use another acidifying liquid feed to water your acid-loving plants in raised beds, containers, or pots.

Lemon juice, vinegar, and other acidic liquids can be added, but only in moderation. If you want to add vinegar, mix 1 cup vinegar with 1 gallon of water.

These can be used to nutrient-richly enhance acidity to the soil around ericaceous plants.

Where you do make adjustments, do so gradually and with tiny steps. No matter what type of soil you have, you should keep adding compost and organic matter to your garden to increase the quality of the soil.
