Daffodils are perennial plants that produce bulbs. The bulbs resemble onion bulbs in appearance. The poisonous nature of daffodil bulbs makes this problematic. Do daffodils and dandelion flowers seem alike?

What images do you have in mind when you think of dandelion? Perhaps it’s a multi-petalled, bright yellow flower. Or perhaps it’s a fluffy white object that you can blow on to let its seeds fly?

Naturally, they are both parts of the same plant. But until a timelapse of this common flower was shared online, we were unaware of the startling number of people who find this fact of life perplexing.

If they learned that a dandelion bloom is actually a composite flower rather than just one flower, they would all undoubtedly freak out even more. What about those white tufted items? That is a fruit.

How can I recognize daffodils?

Daffodil identification and classification techniques haven’t always been as logical and systematic as they are now. In actuality, it wasn’t until 1908—following their meteoric growth in popularity—that attempts at taxonomy of the various species of Narcissus were made in earnest. Even then, the classification system went through a number of modifications and additions before 1998, when the current system was firmly established.

Daffodil popularity has been documented since antiquity. However, daffodils gained enormous popularity among breeders and hybridizers in the 19th century, and an astounding number of new varieties were produced. As a result, horticulture interest reached an all-time high, and the market was flooded with possibilities in a wide range of shapes, sizes, colors, and seasonalities, necessitating a thorough taxonomy of the new species and cultivars. The current system resulted from the daffodil industry’s ongoing expansion, and the majority of the eye-catching hues and forms that we see today are the result of later hybridization efforts.

Classifying Daffodils

Determining a daffodil’s division is only the first step in recognizing it. We also utilize a classification system based on colors. The division of the flower (in this case 13), the color of the tepals, or segments of the perianth, and the color or colors of the corona are all included in this color-based scheme.

The corona is identified after the tepals. In this instance, the code indicates a W since the tepals are white. This daffodil has three hues making up its corona.
