What lilac bush has the deepest purple hue?
Syringa vulgaris ‘Yankee Doodle’ (Lilac), one of the deepest purple lilacs, is an erect, deciduous shrub with highly spectacular panicles that are 8 in. long (20 cm) and filled with single, delightfully fragrant, deep purple flowers. The profusion of blossoms last 3–4 weeks and form a striking display in the late spring. The heart-shaped, blue-green leaves on the tall, open branches are still beautiful in the summer.
How are Bloomerang dark purple lilacs planted?
After its spring bloom, the Bloomerang lilac plant produces new growth, which is when it reblooms. The plant must grow vigorously in the late spring and early summer for the finest rebloom. To achieve this, maintain it well-watered, mulched, and in direct sunlight (six hours a day at least). It is possible to fertilise it in the early spring after the ground has thawed and once more in the late spring after it has bloomed.
If you wish to prune a Bloomerang lilac, do it as soon as it finishes blooming in the spring. Never trim it back in the late winter or early spring because doing so will destroy the buds for the upcoming flowers. The Bloomerang lilac does not require pruning in order to bloom again. Although some people dislike the way they appear on the plant, giving it a light trim after flowering does eliminate the developing seed heads, giving the plant a neater appearance and stimulating more new growth for reblooming. Compared to an untrimmed Bloomerang lilac, trimming after flowering causes the rebloom to be postponed by a few weeks.
The Bloomerang lilac, like almost all lilacs, truly needs a spell of cold weather to bloom successfully. Lilacs are not often suited to warmer areas because of this. However, they are extremely resilient to cold and may survive in USDA zone 3 climates.

Syringa, the scientific name for lilacs, comes from the Greek word syrinx, which means tube. The reason for this is because lilac stems have a spongy pith that can be removed to reveal a hollow tube that has historically been used to make pan-pipes.
