Mulch excels as a superhero in the backyard garden. Even on the hottest days, it maintains soil moisture, prevents many troublesome weeds from growing close to plants, controls soil temperature, and even aids in preventing erosion. A heavy layer of mulch provides hydrangeas with the same protection that other garden plants do. Your hydrangeas will appreciate the mulch by growing better and producing nicer blooms if it is spread and maintained properly.
Choose a mulching substance. An organic mulch that decomposes and enriches the soil is beneficial for hydrangeas. Examples of organic mulches ideal for hydrangeas include compost, pine straw, and pine bark. Chopped leaves are another option.
Depending on the size of the material, apply the mulch 3 to 5 inches deep. Since a thicker layer could prevent enough air and water from reaching the soil, finer mulches with bits 1/2 inch or smaller should only be put to the soil to a depth of 3 inches. Medium mulch should be 4 inches deep and include particles no larger than 1 inches. Apply 5 inches for mulch that is coarser.
To completely cover the space underneath the canopy, spread the mulch around the shrubs. Leave 2 inches of space between the mulch and the hydrangea’s stem to reduce the chance of crown rot.
Do hydrangeas need mulch around them?
One of the most popular plants among Southerners is the French hydrangea. We enjoy growing, clipping, and sharing them with our loved ones. Big balloons of blue, pink, purple, and white blossoms appear to float up like magic from the rich green leaves of these shrubs during the warm summer days. Most of us remember French hydrangeas, or mopheads, flourishing in our grandmother’s yard because of their globular, vividly colored flowers. The flowers on lace cap hydrangeas, a relative of mopheads, appear to float above the foliage in flat, delicate-looking clusters. They have an airy, light aspect that draws bees and butterflies to the yard.
Both mopheads and lacecaps produce lovely displays both in cut bouquets and in the garden. Follow these instructions for planting and caring for both new and established hydrangea plants to ensure a wealth of lovely blooms for years to come.
Choose a quality plant.
In your neighborhood nursery, seek for French hydrangeas that have more than simply gorgeous blossoms. Pick a mature plant that has balanced branching on all sides. The stems should be covered in plump buds or flower heads that are about to bloom or open in late spring and early summer. Bright green leaves that are not drooping are ideal (an indicator that the plant may not have been watered regularly). In order to produce hydrangeas that bloom quickly and out of season so they can be marketed on Mother’s Day, some of them have been designed and produced in greenhouses. Even though they are lovely, they might not be suitable for gardens and, if planted, they will struggle to keep up with the seasonal growth cycles.
Use good soil.
French hydrangeas appreciate soil that is moist, well-drained, and rich in organic matter, such peat or chopped leaves. Give your new plants a fighting chance by spending some time enriching your hard clay soil with organic stuff. Mulch plants to help keep roots cool and moisture stable, which is crucial when the heat of the late summer intensifies. To preserve moisture and control soil temperature, try to keep the mulch at a depth of about 3 inches. To ensure airflow and prevent rot, keep the mulch about four inches away from the plant’s base.
Plant in proper sunlight.
Hydrangeas should be planted in the South in areas that receive a lot of morning sunlight and afternoon shade. (These shrubs have few pests, but if planted in full sun, they may get spider mites.) Hydrangeas, especially mophead varieties, are susceptible to heat stress during hot weather, so be sure to water them frequently. In a seaside environment with cooling breezes, hydrangeas thrive.
Plant them well.
As soon as you get your plants home, water them, thoroughly moistening the soil. Before planting, plan out the location. The majority of French hydrangeas can be planted 3 to 4 feet apart, but you should check the tag to determine how big your choice will get. Create a hole that is the same depth as the pot and two to three times as wide. Put the plant in the hole’s middle after removing it from its container. Accessorize your plants.

Remember to prune.
French hydrangeas that only bloom once, like “Nikko Blue,” blossom on growth from the previous year. Just after summer blossoming, prune. French hydrangeas that bloom repeatedly include “All Summer Beauty” and “Big Daddy,” which produce flowers on both old and young growth. These can nearly always be pruned.
Protect them from cold.
If the winters in your area are extremely cold, you must protect your hydrangeas. You should consider using straw, wood mulch, or leaves to insulate your plants. To safeguard the flower buds that will open early the following year, pile mulch or leaves around your plants so that they are at least 12″ high. To ensure stunning blossoms in the spring, wait until all threat of frost has passed before uncovering. Follow the same procedures as if your hydrangeas were planted in the ground, but instead bring the entire pot inside your garage or a cool basement for the winter. Since they won’t get moisture from snow or rain during the winter, water sparingly.
Change the color.
Sometimes the blue hydrangea you purchased turns pink the following year and blooms. Your hydrangea is merely reacting to the pH of the soil. Pink flowers grow in alkaline soil, while blue blooms grow in acidic soil (pH 5.5 and lower) (pH 7 and higher). By adding aluminum sulfate to the soil surrounding your hydrangeas to make it acidic, you can alter the color. Make your soil more alkaline by adding lime. The pH of the soil has a different impact on various plant selections. White-flowered plants won’t change color.

How does rubber mulch affect hydrangeas?
It prevents fungus and weed growth. Rubber mulch can actually aid in preventing fungus growth in plants because rubber does not absorb water. Due to the non-porous nature of the shredded rubber tire “nuggets,” water and fertilizer can travel through them and into the soil they are placed on.
What kind of mulch contains acid?
Although mulch may give a yard a neat appearance, what makes it most appealing is the work it conducts to enhance plant growth conditions. For most of the year, if not all of it, in nature, the forest floor is covered in leaves, twigs, fruits, branches, and rotting plants. These decaying materials provide a litter layer that shields the soil from erosion and extreme weather with the aid of animals, bacteria, and seasonal weather changes. To resemble this natural process, we apply mulch to our gardens.
Not all soil covers make good mulches
Mulch is any organic material applied as a top layer to soil to improve the conditions for plant roots. The term “organic” in this context refers to things that easily degrade. Materials like gravel, shells, volcanic rock, limestone, and granite screens are frequently used as soil covers but are not technically mulch. Many of the advantages of mulch, such as holding moisture, regulating temperatures, and giving the soil tilth, are not offered by these ground coverings. They may keep the soil too hot or cold to be beneficial to plants since they hold heat or cold longer.
There are many different shapes, hues, and textures of organic mulch. Popular mulches differ by region and are typically influenced by what is readily available there. The majority of mulches used in retail sales are leftovers from logging operations. The majority of the free mulch distributed by cities and towns is made from recycled brush and Christmas trees, as well as from tree cutting and cleaning around power lines.
The most popular mulches are shredded or chipped bark, tree limbs, or full, too-small-for-commercial-harvest, shredded trees. Trees like southern pines, cypresses, northern hardwoods, and eucalyptus are frequently utilized as mulch. Pine straw, leaf mold, and cocoa-bean hulls are some additional typical mulches.
Recently, mulch made from ground-up, colored or stained repurposed wood pallets and woody building waste has been sold. The potential effects of colors or stains leaking into the soil, though, would worry me.
Mulch can be made from a variety of composted soil additions, including manure, grass clippings, and mushroom compost. These substances enrich the soil, but they disintegrate quickly. As a result, unless they are frequently sprayed, they are less effective in controlling soil temperatures or holding onto moisture. Avoid covering the soil surface with thick layers of mulch made of grass clippings, as they might act as a barrier and seal the soil surface.
Mulch selection incorporates both aesthetic and useful considerations. Although they may be simpler to handle, packaged materials are no better than bulk mulches from local suppliers. I’m not aware of any documented examples of mulch spreading plant illnesses, but it is sometimes believed that mulch from local sources could potentially spread diseases and insects. Again, using mulch that has started to disintegrate is the greatest safeguard. By the time they are accessible, bagged mulch and mulch obtained from municipal sources have typically already started to decompose. The color of mulch darkens with time.
Mulch comes in three different typical textures: shredded, tub-ground, and chipped. Bark is typically cut into thin strips of various lengths to make shredded mulch. The most popular types of mulch that are shred are cypress and eucalyptus. Mulch that has been tub-ground blends very small to medium-sized particles. Tub-ground hardwood mulch frequently has a dark, rich appearance due to the substantial volume of finely ground particles. Chipped mulches are typically available and have a coarse texture, especially when used as free community mulch. Some mulch products list the precise ingredients, whilst others do not. Since bagged mulch with a hazy title like “midwestern mulch” may contain recycled building materials, I’m wary about it.
Depending on the mulch, alkaline or acidic materials are released into the soil when it breaks down. This is only significant if you’re trying to cultivate plants that require acid, such as azaleas and rhododendrons. Use an acid-releasing mulch on these plants, such as pine straw, pine bark (which is also high in aluminum), genuine cypress, or some eucalyptus species. Hardwood mulches, on the other hand, have a tendency to become alkaline and are suitable for practically any plant that doesn’t need an acidic environment.
Mulch insulates and protects soil
Mulching has a lot of benefits. Mulches are appealing, to start. They improve a landscape’s appearance by adding texture. The broad acceptance of mulching over the past 20 years can be largely attributed to this single fact.
But the long-term advantages are far more significant. Mulch put correctly regulates soil temperature and insulates it. Mulch in the summer absorbs the sun’s UV rays, weakening them into long-wave radiation. More slowly than if the light had directly hit the soil, heat is transferred to the soil through mulch. Mulched soil loses heat more gradually in the fall. A research I conducted at the Morton Arboretum also revealed that turfgrass and mulch had a minimum soil temperature difference of up to 10F in the winter. Less root damage from freezing is typically the result of warmer winter soil temperatures. In comparison to turfgrass, mulch decreased the maximum root-zone temperatures in the summer by up to 12F.
For places prone to frost heave, the lowering of soil temperatures has one further advantage. Late winter freeze-and-thaw cycles near the earth’s surface are reduced by mulch, and plants experience less root tearing as a result of soil heave.
By lowering evaporation and assisting the soil in soaking up rain, mulch also aids in the retention of soil moisture. By preventing direct contact between soil particles, which are easily dislodged, and rainfall, which can move soil, mulch reduces runoff and potential erosion.
Although many gardeners use mulch to suppress weeds, mulch just reduces the overall weed population and makes it simpler to dig out any weeds that are still there. Because mulch is loose, weeding is made simpler because most weeds root in the mulch rather than the soil (photo, above).
Many gardeners turn to landscape textiles or sheets of plastic to act as a barrier beneath the mulch when it is ineffective as a weed barrier. My experience has shown that these substances frequently obstruct the movement of air and water, especially in silty or clayey soils. Even though I detest pulling weeds out by the roots, I still choose to remove the ones that emerge from a heavy layer of mulch by hand.
Be alert to infrequent problems caused by mulch
Mulch has a few small downsides, but only under a few limited circumstances. Wet soils will keep excess moisture longer in the spring beneath mulch than if the soil is bare, which increases the risk of evaporation. Before applying mulch, make sure your soil drains pretty well to avoid this issue.
The occurrence of a mulch producing a compound that is toxic or fatal to another plant is an additional sporadic issue. When a sensitive plant is mulched with a chemical-producing plant, this is known as allelopathy. The antagonistic association between the black walnut (Juglans nigra) and members of the nightshade family is one of the most typical allelopathic relationships (Solonaceae). Juglone, a chemical made by black walnuts, is toxic to some plant species, including Nicotiana, Datura, and Petunia. Black walnut may be found in mixed-bark mulches in areas where it is widespread. Find out what materials may be present in the mulch you purchase.
The only other issue is that using “green mulch,” like fresh wood chips, may temporarily reduce the amount of nitrogen that is available. Only when hardwood materials moved straight from the chipper to being used as mulch have I noticed this. There are fewer bacteria that create nitrogen and more fungi-decay organisms as soil microbes break down the green mulch. The leaves of plants that are sensitive to changes in nitrogen levels may turn pale green or yellow during this transitory transition, which lasts for four to eight weeks on average. Plants respond properly as the microbial populations repopulate when the mulch decomposes. For every 1,000 square feet of 4-inch-thick green mulch, add approximately half a pound of high-nitrogen fertilizer to prevent this issue. It may be inserted either above or below the mulch.
Mulch generously, but not close to plant stems
Mulch application is easy and quick. Apply mulch all over a planting bed or to the area around the roots of the plants. Use layers that are 3 to 5 inches thick and will settle to a depth of 2 to 4 inches.
Applying mulch directly to the base of any plant, including trees and shrubs, is never a good idea. I frequently see mulch piled up against trees till it resembles a volcano enclosing the trunk. In essence, this burys a portion of the tree’s above-ground stem, which raises the risk of basal rot and might potentially cause the tree to die. Instead, leave the entire tree stem exposed and cover it with a 3 inch layer of mulch to the drip line of the tree.
When the mulch is down to one inch or less, replenish it. Depending on how quickly the material breaks down, how much sunlight it receives, the temperature, how much rain falls, and how long your growth season is, you may need to replace it more frequently. I usually add mulch to my garden once a year. Just put more mulch on top of the current layer to prevent soil disturbance.
