The culprit is a pair of curving pincers that protrude from the back of the flat, reddish-brown European earwig (Forficula auricularia). It affects all clematis and coneflower cultivars throughout the U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 4 through 11 and 3 through 9, respectively. To protect itself, the earwig also consumes the nematodes, mites, and aphids that frequently afflict these plants.
Why do the leaves of my coneflowers have holes in them?
Although Japanese beetles are more prevalent in the eastern part of the country, they can also destroy plants there. They are iridescent, shiny, and less than an inch long beetles. How are coneflower mites managed?
Recently, northern gardeners have been calling us to ask if their coneflowers had aster yellows. An infestation of eryophyid mites is another possibility. What you need to know about these two plant issues is provided here.
Although it can affect a variety of plants, including tomatoes, marigolds, snapdragons, and even lettuce, this disease is most frequently found on coneflowers. The plant will exhibit indicators of deterioration including reduced growth or harmed leaves. However, the plant’s bizarre, malformed blossoms are the most striking symptom. There may be growths coming out of the plant’s cone or green tufts where the purple petals should be. The growths may have very peculiar appearances. When aster leaf hoppers feed on the plants, they transfer a phytoplasma to the plants that causes aster yellows. This would explain why we are hearing more about the sickness this year. The disease tends to be more prevalent during hot years.
The best course of action is to remove the infected plant and discard it because aster yellows cannot be cured and can spread. You shouldn’t compost it. Don’t remove the remaining coneflowers if only one or two are displaying symptoms; instead, keep a look out for problems the next season.

Bear’s breeches (Acanthus mollis), Oriental poppy (Papaver orientale), and globe thistle are perennials with prickly leaves that are resistant to deer (Echinops ritro).
Deer also stay away from leaves with coarse hairs that produce a harsh, sandpaper-like surface. This group contains Japanese anemone, blanketflower, black-eyed susan, and coral bells (Heuchera), as well as other plants (Anemone x hybrida). Deer also appear to be put off by other tactile plants including Artemisia and astilbe (Astilbe chinensis).
Deer steer clear of several plants that are used in conventional herbal treatment. Use only plants that these hoofed animals don’t like to create an entire deer resistant garden. Or strategically incorporate deer-resistant perennials into other plantings. Consider placing perennials that are resistant to deer among plants they often favor, like hosta or garden phlox. Or, to give deer the appearance that the planting contains nothing they like, scatter plants they dislike across planting areas, utilizing them heavily along bed margins.
By the damage left behind, you can detect if deer have been nibbling on your perennial plants. Browsers are deer. When plants reach maturity in the late spring, deer prefer to consume the tops of the plants rather than the entire plant. Deer don’t have upper incisors, so when they close their mouths over a plant, they jerk their heads and pull the plant portion free. On stems or leaves, this causes a ripped, jagged edge.
Echinacea deadheading is recommended.
Despite the fact that the majority of us would want to spend the entire day in our gardens, real life interferes. Therefore, when people ask me about deadheading Echinacea plants, I normally advise them to only do it during the flowering period in order to keep the plant looking lovely, but to leave fallen flowers in the late summer to early winter for the birds.
In order to stop Echinacea from reseeding itself all over the garden, you can also deadhead it. Older forms of coneflower can self-seed, though not quite as aggressively as Rudbeckia. Newer hybrids typically do not self-sow and do not generate viable seed. Birds aren’t really interested in these more recent hybrids either.
