A • Unless you actually catch the offender in the act, there’s really no way to know for sure who it is, and many animals are only active at night, when most gardeners are sound sleeping. However, both adult and young rabbits are the most likely suspects. Coneflowers don’t attract a lot of insects, but the Silvery Checkerspot butterfly’s caterpillars use the leaf as nourishment. It is also known that some moth caterpillars eat the flower crowns.
What is trimming my coneflowers off?
No! No! No! Squirrels, rabbits, or groundhogs don’t do it. It’s an aphid (the “Sunflower Head-Clipping Weevil). I took the one in the photo below out of my purple coneflower and brought it inside. Additionally, traps built of boards, grapefruit skins, chopped potatoes, and cabbage leaves are also possible; however, these do not kill, only facilitate collection (you must check them daily).
Mulch should be avoided since slugs can readily hide there, therefore it is typically not used in places where slugs are a major issue.
