All plants, including daylilies, have a set number of chromosomes that house their genes. The majority are diploid, which means that each cell has two identical sets of chromosomes. Tetraploids have four sets that are the same. Tetraploids only cross with other tetraploids, and diploids only with other diploids.
Tetraploid daylilies are generally considered to have a number of advantages over diploids. They include the following characteristics (generally):
- There are more flowers.
- Scapes are stronger than flower stalks.
- More vivid colors are used.
- The weight of flowers and leaves is greater.
- There is more active growth.
- The number of potential chromosomal pairings will increase as a result of the increased number.
Diploids have a number of distinguishing characteristics, too:
- Flowers have beautiful colors and shapes.
- Diploids include the nicest pink daylilies.
- Diploids predominate in spiders and double daylilies.
- Diploid daylilies are simpler for hybridizers to cross than tetraploid ones.
- There are more diploid cultivars than tetraploids. (That could alter, though. Colchicine, a poisonous chemical derived from Colchicum autumnale, the autumn crocus or meadow saffron, is used in a process that turns many diploid daylilies into tetraploids.)
Sometimes there is disagreement as to whether a certain cultivar is diploid or tetraploid. That’s the case with ‘Avante Garde’ below:
In order to represent the ambiguity around its ploidy, the National Gardening Association Daylily Database, by far the best daylily database on the Internet, first classed it as both diploid and tetraploid. Now, it is classified as diploid. The Backyard Gardener website, Nature’s Melody Nursery, and Ogden Station Daylilies all still classify it as tetraploid, despite this. By omitting the ploidy, other websites get around the problem. ‘Avante Garde’ is classified as diploid by the American Hemerocallis Society, which is regarded as the authority on all things daylily.
What distinguishes a tetraploid from a diploid?
When selecting a ryegrass cultivar for the farm or even certain paddocks of the farm, it’s crucial to understand the ploidy of the cultivar. Either diploids or tetraploids will characterize all ryegrass varieties. Tetraploids have four chromosomes per plant cell while diploids only have two, making this their primary distinction.
Diploids
Tetraploid plants have a higher dry matter content per kilogram of pasture than diploid plants, which have a lower water content per cell. As a result, diploids typically have more tillers per plant, but their leaves are typically thinner and smaller. However, both ploidys have comparable protein amounts.
In systems with higher stocking rates or on farms where overgrazing and pugging may occur throughout the year, diploids are thus frequently thought to be more suited.
The somewhat decreased metabolisable energy of diploids as opposed to tetraploids is a drawback. This is brought on by the plant’s decreased proportion of soluble to insoluble polysaccharides. Additionally, they are typically less tolerant of clover because the thick ground cover that diploid pastures offer can shade out and outcompete clover plants.
According to some anecdotal evidence, diploids are more persistent than tetraploids. But this is probably very cultivar-specific.
Tetraploids
Because tetraploid ryegrasses are more delectable, cows who graze on them often consume a little bit more dry matter. Tetraploid swards frequently have less ground cover and are more open than diploid swards. Higher stocking rates in grazing systems can make this difficult, and the increased amount of exposed ground area can make weed control a bigger problem.
Tetraploids often have somewhat greater metabolisable energy levels than diploids, which improves post-grazing residuals and milk yield responses because cows are more inclined to eat tetraploid grasses. The wider open sward in a tetraploid ryegrass stand makes it better suited for sowing clover in a mixture because tetraploid ryegrass will provide the clover seed a greater chance to grow than a diploid cultivar.
Tetraploids need to be maintained extremely carefully, especially in wetter environments, and improper management can lead to issues with a tetraploid’s persistence.

Can you hybridize tetraploid and diploid daylilies?
I really wanted to leave daylily hybridization to the professionals and be happy with collecting and selling the offspring other hybridizers were producing. When Ted Petit, a renowned international hybridizer, and his wife Susan came to see my garden, they advised me to do so. Every year, I work on a few plants, and I often obtain 100 to 200 seeds. Since it takes weeks to create a new bed, my land is only about as rocky as I can make it for space to grow new plants. It is fairly simple to hybridize daylilies. You apply pollen from one daylily’s stamen to the pistil of an another daylily. Since insects hardly ever pollinate daylily pistils, you don’t need to worry about covering it. It is a lot of fun to hybridize plants and see what the progeny will look like if you have some space to grow them. Some of them might finish up with spots or looking a little unsightly, while others might seem quite lovely. Like kids in a family, each seed from each parent will generate a unique seedling. On the next pages, I’ll walk you through the procedure, and at the end, I’ll show you pictures of some of my seedlings’ flowers from the previous summer. There are tetraploid and diploid daylilies. This has something to do with how many chromosomes they have. No seed will form if a diploid and tetraploid are crossed.

I’ve been raising the mystery yellow plant for years. It now goes by the name “Jeddore Yellow Star” in the garden. H. “Diabolique” is the deep purple variety. One of the children is shown in the third image. It demonstrates how the colors from the two parents were unusually mixed with the first flower’s shape. Other seedlings from the same cross that weren’t as attractive weren’t worth maintaining. A seed pod can start to form after you cross the two daylilies. Seed pods and flower buds can appear remarkably similar. The pods look rounder and fatter as they mature.
A fairly ripe seed pod is shown in the picture on the left below. Harvesting the seeds requires waiting until they begin to turn brown. Harvest the pod as soon as it begins to break open, like in the middle of the photo below, to prevent rain or insects from damaging the seeds. Compared to diploid seeds, tetraploid seeds are bigger. Tetraploid seeds and a penny are seen in the image to the right below. I keep mine in little ziplock bags and keep them in the refrigerator, not the freezer, for at least six weeks (yes, the girls at the dollar stores claim I am older than most of their customers who are looking for these little baggies). I use a laundry marker to draw a cross on the bag. One of my seedlings (SZLV4 crossed with “Clarification”) is indicated in the image.
The seeds can be planted after being chilled. I presoak the seeds in their baggies for a few days until roots begin to appear using a solution of 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 10 parts water. Then I plant in a potting soil and compost mixture that has been watered with really hot water and then slightly cooled. I particularly enjoy using the more recent ice cream cartons because they don’t dry out and are quite deep for root growth. I poke tiny holes for the seed with a pencil before planting it, making sure the root points downward. I next add a thin coating of fine sand to the soil to control diseases that are born in the soil. The seeds can be seen soaking in the bags in the first image. After a week, the second image depicts the new seedlings starting to emerge. A white seedling can be seen in the upper left corner of the second image if you look closely. This occasionally takes place. The plant will eventually wither because it lacks chlorophyll. The seedlings are seen in the third image after several weeks of growth. They can stay in the container or be re-potted. Frequently, I start my seeds in early March, and in May or June, I plant them in the garden. Until they are transplanted, they often remain in the same container. I water frequently without overwatering because the container has no drainage holes. I feed them Seaboost, a seaweed-based product from Nova Scotia. Every two weeks, I add it to the water. It aids in providing the micronutrients that seedlings require.
I sowed some seeds this year in the fall, and after three months, I moved them into separate containers. I once more utilized high-quality composted potting soil. The three-month-old sapling in the picture below might bloom this summer. My seedlings generally don’t blossom until their second summer. One of my seedling beds is shown in the photo to the right below in September. It was planted in June from seeds started in March of the same year.

What two varieties of daylilies are there?
One of the easiest plants to include in any garden is the daylily. Once established, they yield some of the most gorgeous blooms and are quite simple to grow.
These flowers are sturdy and resilient. They produce large, vibrant flowers that start flowering in the middle of summer and continue into the first few months of autumn, and they are rarely bothered by insect pests or disease.
How long do daylilies live for?
Perennial plants come in more than 100 different varieties. Numerous additional flowers, bushes, grasses, herbs, and even catnip are included in this group of well-liked plants.
There is a perennial for every taste, from exotic Hibiscus and Lavender, which are used in teas and tinctures all over the world, to charming and exquisite Russian Sage and Coral Bells.
Hemerocallis (Daylily)
Daylilies are available in thousands of different types, in practically every size and color imaginable. The single color that does not go well with daylilies is blue since they like tough environments like sloping properties, dry soil, and small urban garden plots.
Even though a single Daylily flower bloom only lasts a few days, the plant can last up to three years. Keep in mind that the daylily need additional management to prevent it from taking over because it is designated a weed in some areas because to its invasiveness.
Hosta
The Hosta is a lovely perennial with enormous leaves. There are numerous cultivars of these lovely and ornamental plants. Their muted, elegant colors make them a favorite perennial of interior designers and landscape architects. They are fantastic shade plants, suitable for providing coverage in densely planted areas, with strong stems and sturdy blooms.
Hosta perennials can live for 15 years if given the right care, including adequate moisture and humidity. Hostas are an excellent choice for gardeners of all skill levels because they are quite simple to grow.
Hibiscus
Due to its aroma, lovely color, and edible characteristics, hibiscus is one of the most well-known and adored perennials, used in everything from tea to perfume scents. It does well in tropical regions since it likes the sun and prefers very moist soil.
The earliest part of spring is the ideal time to plant hibiscus. Before committing to planting anything else in your garden, you should plant them. This is so that the hibiscus has time to establish itself and send roots deep into the ground. Their ability to thrive unhindered by other companion plants is crucial.
Depending on how well and consistently they are cared for, hibiscus plants can live for five to ten years.
Heuchera (Coral Bells)
Coral Bells are a perennial with a lovely, spherical, bush-like shape generated by pointed partial-star leaves. Depending on the season and the environment of the precise place where they are planted, these leaves might be a deep purple, sage, or green tint.
With sprouts of tall stems that each contains at least ten tiny bright pink flowers, Coral Bells are an excellent addition to any garden for a pop of added color or to increase your home’s curb appeal. Coral Bells thrive whether grown in pots or other containers as well as when let to spread out naturally along the borders of lawns, roads, fences, or walkways.
A perennial, coral bells have a three- to four-year lifespan. But as they mature, they don’t get smaller and weaker as some plants do; they get stronger and more vibrant.
Nepeta (Catmint, Catnip)
Catnip is well known for being the preferred intoxicating treat of cuddly feline pals all around the world. Catnip, also referred to as catmint, is a fantastic perennial to plant if you want a vibrant show of color that will last throughout the warmer months.
Due to the fact that catnip needs a lot of heat and direct sunlight, make sure it is the tallest plant in the area and is kept away from other perennials that will grow bushy and cast shadows.
A Catnip plant will live for three to five years if properly clipped and trimmed every two weeks, depending on whether it is in a pot or growing in a yard.
Ornamental Grass (Various)
You might think that grass only appears on lawns or grows erratically on the sides of overpasses. However, one of the best perennial plants for adding depth and dimension to your outdoor spaces is ornamental grass.
There are numerous forms of ornamental grass. Nearly all of them are perennials, which require little to no maintenance and can last up to 15 years. They are a great option for filling in extra landscaping gaps close to fences because they are a very hardy perennial. Around placing flowers by the pool, you may also use them to help create a romantic, beachy look.
Perovskia (Russian Sage)
The ideal robust perennial for hot, arid areas is Russian sage. Although its name might imply it comes from Eastern European woodlands, this plant is technically a woody perennial.
Russian Sage does not fare well in humid environments and prefers to live in well-drained soil. Although its purple blooming buds, which resemble the well-known Lavender plant, only last around four months in total, they must be clipped approximately a month after planting if starting with a mature plant. It can live for three years.
Baptisia (False Indigo)
A perennial that enjoys being planted in full sunlight is False Indigo. It can survive for 10 years in a region with very deep soil but is intolerant of shady situations.
When properly managed for, false indigo can reach heights of about 3 feet. It produces tiny, vibrantly purple flowers with a form akin to a pea blossom. The ability to be moved in the same year as planting is one of the best aspects about False Indigo. This makes it very tough and adaptable.
Lavandula (Lavender)
The most prevalent perennial in the world is by far lavender. It is understandable that families, farmers, landscape architects, and health lovers all love lavender as a garden favorite because of its calming and aromatherapeutic fragrance as well as its lovely light purple appearance.
Many lavender cultivars can live up to four or five years depending on the acidity of the soil. Lavender has been grown for ages due to its reputed medicinal properties and ability to grow nearly four feet tall. However, as it ages, it grows bushier and is less able to maintain its lofty appearance.
Lavender is a great pollinator for bees, according to anyone who has kept a hive of bees for more than a year. It imparts a delicate yet fragrant profile to their honey.
