Aimee’s uneasiness with her vulva is a lesser, less significant storyline from the third episode of season three that also merits notice.
The plot starts when Aimee visits Otis’ mother Jean to discuss some of the problems she’s been having in an effort to process the trauma surrounding the sexual assault she had last season.
Aimee discovers an educational model of the vulva Jean has in her therapy room while she is left to her own devices while Jean resolves a dispute between Otis and Ola (who moves into the Milburn household with her father, Jakob). When Jean re-enters the room, Aimee is still observing the vulva model.
“She responds as Jean shuts the door, “Um, my vagina doesn’t look like thisone of my lip pieces is longer than the other.”
“Jean responds, “Well, it’s just an instructional model.” ” The lip pieces you’re referring to are called labia and the external portion is known as the vulva. Because they are unaware of what a “normal” vulva looks like, many women are ashamed of their genitalia.
Even though this may not be a pivotal moment in the series or even the remainder of the show, it raises a critical point: how many women are unaware of their own anatomy.
Nearly half of women (45%) and 43% of women, respectively, were unable to correctly identify the vagina and labia in a YouGov survey from 2019 that questioned men and women to name the various parts of the female genitalia. And in a 2016 research of 1000 women, 60% of the participants were unable to locate the vulva (the name for the entire outer part of the female genitals, including the vagina and labia).
Being unaware of what a “normal” vulva looks like and the fact that there are numerous of them, as Jean correctly notes “Shapes, sizes, and colors also cause many women to feel self-conscious about their genitalia, which can prevent them from seeking life-saving treatment out of concern that a doctor will see their body.
What is meant by vulva?
The outside of the female genitalia is known as the vulva. The labia majora (outer lips), labia minora (inner lips), and clitoris are all parts of the vulva, which is also known as the vestibule.
There are two groups of skin folds around the vaginal opening. The smaller, hairless inner set is referred to as the labia minora. The labia majora, which make up the outer set, are bigger and have hair on the outside. Lips are called labia in Latin. The urethral aperture is protected right above the vaginal entrance where the inner and outer labia meet (the short tube that carries urine from the bladder). One Bartholin gland is located on each side, immediately inside the vaginal entrance. A mucus-like fluid that is produced by these glands serves as lubricant during intercourse.
The labia minora come together at the front of the vagina to form a fold or tiny hood of skin known as the prepuce. Underneath the prepuce is the clitoris. During sexual stimulation, the clitoris, a structure of highly sensitive tissue measuring about 3/4 inches, swells up with blood. The fourchette is where the labia minora also connect, immediately below the vaginal opening. The anus, which is the rectum’s entrance, is located beyond the fourchette. This is the location where feces exits the body. The perineum is the region that lies between the vagina and the anus.
The inner borders of the labia majora or labia minora are most frequently affected by vulvar cancer, commonly known as vulvar cancer. Less frequently, it begins in the Bartholin glands or the clitoris.
