According to a recent study, plants use a specific component known as a transporter protein to help carry smell molecules along rather than merely letting them float in the air. The findings, which were released on June 30 in Science, could aid scientists in genetically modifying a variety of plants to both entice pollinators and ward off pests and plant eaters.
According to David Clark of the University of Florida in Gainesville, who specializes in horticulture biotechnology and genetics, “these researchers have been following this transporter protein for a long.”
They now possess it. And there may be serious ramifications.
Smells are a kind of communication for plants (SN: 7/27/02, p. 56). Insects and other species that carry pollen and aid in plant reproduction can be attracted by the fragrance compounds, whereas pests and animals that consume plants can be repelled. By adjusting the amount of scent, the proteins discovered in the latest study may help plants draw in more pollinators or better defend themselves. According to Clark, currently undecorated plants may be made to emit scents as well, improving their chances of procreation and survival.
Ironing out the wrinkles
Petunia flowers that produced normal levels of the transport protein PhABCG1 (top row) are bigger and better-looking than petunia flowers that were genetically modified to generate less of the protein. PhABCG1 levels were lowest and the most damage was seen in the flowers in the bottom rows.
Volatile organic molecules, which are easily converted into gases at room temperature, give plants their smells. A combination of benzaldehyde, the same chemical that gives cherries and almonds their fruity, nutty flavor, and phenylpropanoids, a substance frequently found in perfumes, give petunias their sweet scent.
However, pleasant smells come with a cost: if these volatile molecules accumulate inside of a plant, they may cause cell damage.
Joshua Widhalm, a horticultural at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, and colleagues looked into the movement of the fragrance molecules in petunias using computer simulations about two years ago. The findings demonstrated that the chemicals cannot leave cells quickly enough on their own to protect the plant. Therefore, the scientists came to the conclusion that something must be transporting the chemicals.
As the plant progressed from its budding stage, which had the lowest levels of volatile organic compounds, to its flower-opening stage, which had the greatest levels, the team doing the current study, led by Purdue biologist Natalia Dudareva, looked for genetic changes. The gene PhABCG1 went into overdrive as flowers opened and fragrance levels soared; levels of the protein it produces shot up to more than 100 times higher than during the budding stage, the researchers write.
Next, the team genetically modified petunias to generate 70–80% less PhABCG1 protein. The modified petunias emitted around half as much smell chemicals as natural ones, with amounts inside the plant’s cells rising to double or higher levels than usual. Images of the cells demonstrate how the accumulation caused the cell membranes to degrade.
According to Clark, a lot of research has been done to determine the genes and proteins responsible for producing fragrance molecules. However, it appears that this is the first study to have discovered a transporter protein that moves those substances outside of the cell. He says, “That’s a major thing.

Recently, researchers from the University of Washington found that this conflict even affects something as sweet and pleasurable as the floral fragrance of a garden flower.
These issues were investigated by the researchers in the common garden petunia. This hybrid with white flowers generates a fragrant, sweet-smelling scent in the evening to entice insect pollinators like hawk moths.

“Myles Fenske, a biology doctorate student at the University of Washington and one of the paper’s three lead authors, stated that researchers are currently figuring out what connects the circadian clock to smell creation and release.
Since the LHY gene in petunias had never been investigated, Fenske and his team gathered fundamental knowledge about LHY to demonstrate that it performs the same circadian functions in other plant species. Numerous genes that make up the circadian clock are only active at particular times of the day, when they can affect the activity of other genes that dictate what cells do. The petunia LHY gene is most active in the morning, which is the opposite time of day from when the petunia releases its enticing evening scent, according to the study team in Imaizumi’s lab.
Imaizumi and his group proposed that LHY’s morning activity could inhibit the synthesis of fragrant compounds. The petunias didn’t produce any of their fragrance chemicals when they extended LHY’s operations into the evening.
Petunia plants without the LHY gene’s morning surge of activity might create and release their odors earlier in the day if LHY’s activity really did have a negative impact on fragrance generation. Petunia plants with decreased LHY activity were developed by Fenske and his associates. Four to eight hours earlier in the day, those plants generated and emitted aromatic compounds.
Even more, Imaizumi’s team has learned how LHY suppresses the generation of floral odors. It prevents ODO1, a petunia gene that supports the creation and release of flower fragrances, from functioning properly. LHY halts the production of floral scents by suppressing ODO1 activity in the morning. ODO1 is able to increase production of the fragrant compounds precisely in time for the evening aromatic release as the LHY gene becomes less active later in the day.
Imaizumi and his team think that interactions between these two genes may be a typical way for a plant’s circadian clock to influence or govern the production of fragrant floral fragrances because genes like LHY and ODO1 are present in mostif not allflowering plants. If true, alterations in the LHY-ODO1 bridge’s strength or timing could be the reason why flowers shift the timing of smell production as they develop.
The preference of pollinators for either typical garden petunias or petunias with altered LHY activity is now being investigated by Imaizumi and his team. These studies could eventually help scientists increase the pollination efficiency of other plants, such as significant agricultural species.

Which petunias smell pleasant?
It may be advantageous that someone has been playing around with the petunia genes. The kind of deep nectar reservoir hummingbirds seek find was being produced by petunias in my garden last summer as dusk approached. I’m curious to learn more about this because I sometimes consider strategies to get my little hummer to stay in the garden longer. Petunias (Petunia x hybrida), another flower with a long tube neck with a similar aroma, are related to tobacco and ornamental nicotine (Nicotiana hybrids and species) and belong to the Solanaceae family.
It appears that not all petunias are perfumed based on my extremely disorganized survey of petunia aroma (which involves sampling each cultivar as I walk down the nursery aisle). This is a very inaccurate method because flowers only release their scents at specific times (often in the morning or evening) and under specific environmental conditions (high humidity, cool air temperature), and they typically smell completely different in the middle of the day at the garden center. Petunias vary in their ability to release fragrance, nevertheless.
Petunias come in a variety of flower shapes, sizes, colors, and bicolors (spreading hedgiflora, grandiflora, multiflora, milliflora, frilled, double). All were developed from two Argentinian species: P. axillaris, which has huge, very fragrant, night-blooming white flowers, and P. integrifolia, which has smaller, nearly odorless violet blooms. These two species have given hybridizers enough genetic material to create a wide range of plant forms and colors. We can choose plants for groundcover in beds or to cascade down the sides of baskets and containers thanks in particular to the breeding work done on spreading petunias (such the Wave, Easy Wave, Tidal Wave, Shock Wave, Avalanche, and Ramblin’ Series). Then there are the mounding petunias, which come in a variety of colors—from the palest pink to almost genuine black—and have stars, stripes, veins that are two colors, and various multicolored necks.
No catalogue description for this profusion of petunias mentions smell. The majority of breeding work has concentrated on color development, and after being shocked by some of the gaudy new cultivars like candy-pink and green “Lime Bicolor,” I can state that it has gone completely overboard. It has been advantageous to develop self-cleaning plants, such as Proven Winners’ Supertunia (no more wasted blooms that resemble wet tissue paper).
The Madness Plum Crazy petunia I grew was fragrant; perhaps other cultivars with mauve petals displaying purple veining will be fragrant as well. The yellow and white grandiflora “Prism Sunshine” petunia, as well as a number of double petunias (particularly mauve-purple varieties), are all perfumed at night, as far as I’m aware. Last year, Purple Wave appeared to have a perfume in my garden. These hybrid plants contain those Argentinian species, and the fragrance genes from P. axillaris appear to be particularly strong in the white (or white bicolor), veined mauve single, and double purple blooms.
This is not simply conjecture from a gardener who dreams of having a hummingbird. Researchers at the University of Amsterdam have discovered the volatile benzenoid compounds that species petunia petals use to create perfume. It is well known that violet P. integrifolia creates a less potent perfume during the day to attract pollinating bees in sunlight, whereas white P. axillaris produces a potent scent at nightfall to attract night-flying hawk moths. It is simpler to develop fresh perfumed petunias when the aroma genes are isolated.

Since petunias are a common and simple annual to grow, every hanging basket in the Eastern United States is undoubtedly decorated with them. Petunias don’t need much other than well-drained soil, direct sunlight, and a lot of fertilizer. For a truly all-summer show, they also need deadheading. Who would have ever imagined that a dowdy South American relative of tobacco would emerge from obscurity to become such a common garden plant? To be honest, too many of their families have been, but that is irrelevant.
In addition to the wave series, other popular petunias include supertunias, multifloras, and grandifloras, but each hybrid has advantages of its own. Despite having a similar appearance, related Calibrachoa have very little or no aroma.
