Even though the two blossoms differ in a number of ways, the only thing you really need to watch out for is how the stems and leaves grow. Every time a plant has multiple stems and numerous leaves emerging from the base, it is a daylily. A real lily will always have a single stem with swirling leaves.
What kind of leaves are present on daylilies?
Perennial plants called daylilies get their name from their flowers, which only bloom for around a day on average. Most species’ blooms emerge in the early morning and fade during the course of the following night, possibly to be replaced by another bloom on the same scape the following day. Some species bloom at night. The fact that new flowers continue to open on cut stems for several days makes daylilies excellent cut flowers even though they are not frequently used for formal flower arrangements. Although the flower resembles a genuine lily despite the name, daylilies are not. Prior to 2009, daylilies were classified scientifically as members of the Liliaceae family. In contrast to daylilies, which have fibrous roots, Liliaceae species grow from bulbs and are poisonous to both people and animals if consumed. The idea that daylilies possess the same poisonous qualities as real lilies is a prevalent one.
Daylilies were transferred from the family Liliaceae to the family Xanthorrhoeaceae, subfamily Hemerocallidoideae, according to the APG III system in 2009. In the APG IV system, Xanthorrhoeaceae was changed to Asphodelaceae in 2016.
The majority of daylily species grow in clumps, each of which has roots, leaves, a crown, scapes, and flowers. The opposing fans of long, linear, lanceolate leaves have arched leaves. The tiny white area between the leaves and the roots called the crown. Some daylilies develop little leafy proliferations at the nodes or in the bracts along the scape. When planted, a proliferation develops roots and is a perfect replica of the original plant. Many different varieties of daylilies have enlarged roots where they store food and water.
Tepals are the collective name for the three petals and three sepals that make up a typical daylily flower. Each tepal contains a midrib that can be the same basic color or a distinct color. The throat, or central region of the flower, may have a contrasting hue from the tepals’ more distant regions. Normally, each flower contains six stamens, each of which has an anther with two lobes. An effective bloom generates a botanical capsule after pollination (often erroneously called a pod since botanical pods are found in Fabaceae, not Hemerocallis).
How do daylily leaves appear?
Lilies and daylilies share the same term “lily” in their names, leading to frequent confusion about which flower they are or that they are related. This is untrue; the two species have no connection to one another. True lilies have the scientific name (Lilia), while daylilies belong to the (Hemerocallis) family (Lilium). It is sometimes simpler for a gardener to identify which “lily” (s)he is dealing with thanks to certain traits. (A field of daylilies is depicted in the image featured above.)
The following is a list of their variations:
- The first difference you will see when planting these flowers is that daylilies grow from tubers (rhizomes), whereas lilies grow from bulbs.
- Three petals and three sepals make up the top layer of a daylily’s two stages of flowering. There are six petals on a lily constantly.
- Examining their leaves will help you tell the two apart easily. A daylily plant’s leaves resemble grass blades that are emerging from a clump. Lilies, on the other hand, have leaves that extend the whole height of the central stem. They will resemble spirals or whorls.
- Daylilies often reach their tallest point at about 4 feet. Lilies can reach heights of up to ten feet.
- Since daylily blooms only endure one day, they are not appropriate for bouquets. Lilies have blooms that can last up to a week and are frequently used as cut flowers.
- The blossoms of daylilies are tasty. Lilies are poisonous in every aspect, especially to cats.
Lilies and daylilies are different even though they have the same common name. Hopefully, this knowledge will clear up any doubts one may have regarding these gorgeous garden plants.
What shape do a lily’s leaves have?
Lilies are the traditional examples of monocotyledons—plants with just one seed leaf. Most lilies are perennial, upright herbs that grow from a bulb. The majority grow from underground stems or other structures, however some climb and a few are woody. One to several leaves may be present, and they are arranged alternately or in whorls on the stem. The leaves are usually parallel veined, flat, linear to lance-shaped, without teeth along the margins, and may spread into a papery sheath where they join to the stem.
Some lily species are renowned for their spectacular blossoms, which are frequently funnel- or trumpet-shaped, nodding, and fragrant. Lily blooms lack any contrast between the appearance of the petals and sepals, are bisexual, radially symmetrical, and typically have components that are multiples of three (four in Maianthemum). The showy portion of the flower typically has six primary segments that are joined at the ovary’s base. Flowers can grow individually at the top of a leafless stem (like tulips), in clusters of numerous flowers (like the lily of the valley, Convallaria majalis), or in a variety of other flower arrangements, like the umbels of onions (Allium spp.). Pollination of lily flowers by insects. Lilies either produce capsules or berries as their fruit. The three compartments of the capsules are separated into several flat, spherical seeds that are frequently stacked like coins.
The Liliaceae family contains roughly 4,000 species and 240 genera. Since lilies are a complex group, contemporary taxonomists have opted to divide the group into four main families: Smilaceae, the catbriers or greenbriers; Convallariaceae, the lily-of-the-valley and Solomon’s seals; Melanthaceae, or bunch-flowers. The Liliaceae are discussed in the broadest sense in this article, which encompasses all four of these subgroups.

They are typically spring-flowering plants of steppes and mountain meadows in the southwest and from Himalayan Asia to China. The lily family includes many well-known springtime woodland plants in North America, including the genus Trillium’s trilliums and wake-robins, bellworts or merrybells (Uvularia), dogtooth violets (Erithronium) with their distinctive mottled brown leaves, wild lily of the valley (Maianthemum canadense), and Solomon’s seals (Polygonatum). Smilax species, which are primarily perennial shrubs or herbs found in tropical and subtropical climates, are also found in North America. Smilaxes are unique among monocotyledonous plants in that they produce tendrils—slender twining appendages that are used to cling to and climb other plants.
The genus Lilium, which bears the family’s name, contains many of the most exquisite lilies, which are appreciated as house and garden ornaments. People have long been fascinated with lilies. Early civilizations portrayed the Madonna lily (L. candidum), an endemic to the area from Greece to Syria, on pottery and mosaics. Easter or trumpet lily is the type of greenhouse lily that is most frequently grown (L. longiflorum). Easter and lilies have a long-standing relationship. White lilies were employed by European painters during the Renaissance to represent the Annunciation of the Virgin, or the angel Gabriel’s revelation to Mary that she would conceive a Son. Many lilies are uniformly dazzling white, which in some cultures represents purity. Lilies do, however, also come in a wide range of different hues. Flowers are orange in L. japonicum of Japan and L. tigrinum of east Asia, purple in L. martagon of central Europe to China, yellow in L. canadense of eastern North America and L. croceum of central to southern Europe, and rose in L. pardinarium. Many lilies have lovely scents that are occasionally extracted and added to perfumes.
In their broadest meaning, tulips are also considered to be a part of the lily family. The majority of the species of tulips, which are native to the Northern Hemisphere, are found in western and central Asia. The word “tulip,” which alludes to the flower’s form, is derived from the Turkish word for turban. Tulipa gesneriana and T. suaveolens of western Asia are the two species from which most horticultural variations derive. Though other species are more frequently used in the creation of new varieties, these are typically sold under the name T. gesneriana.
The tulip was first domesticated by the Turks, who also introduced it to Europe at an unknown date, though the flower was first mentioned in a European publication in 1559. Before tulip fever struck Holland in the early seventeenth century, tulips gained popularity over time. To develop and breed new, rarer types of tulips, there was a maniacal rush. One tulip bulb cost speculators thousands of dollars, and some people even sold their homes to speculate in the tulip market. One bulb of an expensive kind cost the equivalent of $10,000 in 1630. Between 1634 and 1637, when tulip mania peaked, the Dutch government was forced to intervene and control the sector. Despite the fact that Japan and the state of Washington are now significant producers, the Netherlands continues to be the sole global producer of tulip bulbs.
For its potent flavor and aroma, the economically significant genus Allium is widely farmed. A bulb, which is really a large bud encircling a short stalk, is what gives plants their distinctive appearance. The bud’s leaves are very thick and closely overlapping. The margins of fleshy leaves are visible as concentric lines when an onion is cut crosswise. The onion’s skin is made up of its outermost, papery leaves, which are not meaty at all. The common onion (A. cepa), garlic (A. sativum), leeks (A. porum), shallots (A. ascalonicum), and chives are among the members of this genus that are grown (A. schoenoprasum). The three states that produce the most onions in North America are Texas, New York, and California.
Other lily family members are economically significant for a variety of reasons. Additional from the ones mentioned above, there are other other lilies that are significant ornamentals. With few to many leaves arranged either alternately or in whorls on the stem and enormous, showy, bell-shaped blooms that are typically nodding, fritallarias are common ornamentals. Because they have flowers that are primarily one color and are checkered with another color, several species of Fritallaria are attractive as ornaments. While F. aurea from Turkey is yellow and checkered, Fritallaria meleagris from central and southern Europe is purplish with white checkering. Many fritillarias in the wild seem to be pollinated by queen wasps.
A tiny perennial that is native to Europe and has naturalized in some areas of eastern North America, lily of the valley is typically planted for its fragrant spike of blooms, which are frequently used in perfumes and bridal bouquets. Hyacinths, grape hyacinths, and scillas are additional attractive lilies that are frequently produced.
Although it is not a fern, the asparagus fern (A. plumosus) is used by florists to add lacy greenery to bouquets. Asparagus officinalis’ young shoots are a significant cash crop.
Soft drinks have traditionally included wild sarsaparilla (Avalia nudicaulis) as an ingredient. Aloe (Aloe vera) was formerly used to make needles for early phonographs, and it is still valuable today as a burn salve and in cosmetics. Gout, a painful condition characterized by inflamed joints, was treated with meadow saffron, also known as fall crocus (Colchicum autumnale), and is currently extensively utilized in research. To stop spindle development during mitosis and prevent the separation of duplicated chromosomes, cochicine is taken from the plant. This results in a polyploid, which has twice as many chromosomes as usual.
The renowned Italian violins of the eighteenth century were once finished with dragon’s blood, the resin of the Dracaena, or dragon tree.
There are several deadly lilies. The United States has a list of plants that are dangerous since lily-of-the-valley is only mildly harmful. The species of death camases (Zygadenus spp.) are particularly poisonous. Zygadenus elegans is a pretty plant with a cluster of star-shaped flowers that resembles a wand. Unfortunately, its onion-like bulb mimics the bulb of edible camases, which belong to the genus Camassia. In the western United States, Zagadenus venenosus is a frequent cause of livestock poisoning. Squill lilies are also quite poisonous; the white Urginea maritima bulbs have been used to kill rodents while the red Urginea maritima bulbs are a valuable heart stimulant. Another squill called scilla has glucosides in it that have been employed as rodenticides. Tulip finger is a severe dermatitis that some greenhouse workers who handle tulips develop. Tulip finger produces reddening and swelling of the finger along with itching and burning sensations, and in the worst cases, resulting in scaly, eczematous skin.
What distinguishes the tiger lily from the daylily?
Bright orange, downward-facing blossoms with black spots on the petals are the hallmark of the tiger lily. On roughly the upper third of the stalk, many blossoms develop. Typically, daylilies have open trumpet-shaped flowers with petals that flare upward.
Prime Season
Recognized by all gardeners, Yellow Day Lily is a naturalized non-native invasive species that, by the end of June, stands out beautifully against the Upland Garden’s central hill’s backdrop of green foliage with its lemon yellow color. A 2 to 4 foot tall erect perennial, yellow daylilys are. The flowering stem is a smooth, leafless, green “scape,” which is an aerial stem that grows directly from the root.
The leaves are basal, long and strap-like with a keel, pointy tip, and sheathing base. On the scape, there are no leaves, however there could be a few tiny leafy bracts.
The inflorescence, also known as a cyme, is a terminal cluster of long stalked flowers. Within the inflorescence and in the top part of the scape, there is branching. A plant may have eight to twelve flowers, but only one of them will open at once.
The 6-parted, 2 to 4 inch broad flowers have a strong lemon aroma, are diurnal, but frequently remain open into the evening. Six golden tepals made up of merged petals and sepals with smooth edges (unlike the Orange Day Lily) and a parallel vein pattern. At their bases, they come together to form a brief tube. When the flower blooms, they all spread and flare outward into a trumpet form. There are six somewhat varying in length stamens with golden filaments that curl upward from the base of the bloom. As the pollen ages, the anthers change from a deeper yellow to a darker yellow. The single style has a fuzzy three-lobed stigma and is yellowish in color.
Seed: A 3-lobed cylindrical capsule made of fertile flowers contains glossy, spherical seeds that range in size from 3 to 5 mm.
Environment: Yellow Day Lily tends not to spread and instead grows from an expanded fibrous root system as opposed to a bulb like the true lilies. Because it is not invasive, it is often seen growing along roadsides, at the boundaries of wooded areas, and in abandoned gardens. It may thrive in a variety of soils, however blossoming will be much diminished if not exposed to sun for the majority of the day. The flowering season will be shortened by extremely dry conditions.
Names: The Greek words hemeros, which means “day,” and kallos, which means “beauty,” are combined to form the genus Hemerocallis, which refers to the lovely blooms that bloom for only one day. The name of the species, lilioasphodelus, likewise derives from two words: Lilium, which means “lily,” and asphodel, which alludes to the plant’s resemblance to a lily whose roots were consumed (just like this plant). The creator of the 1753 categorization of plants is identified as “L.,” a reference to the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778), who created the binomial system used in current taxonomy. The plant is referred to as H. flava in older literature.
In an effort to isolate the genus Hemerocallis from the lily family, botanists have established the Hemerocallidaceae, a new segregate family containing 1318 genera (2 in North America). This was mentioned in Flora of North America (Ref. #W7 Vol.26), and the University of Minnesota Herbarium included it in their checklist of Minnesota’s vascular flora. This may not be mentioned in many references yet.
Comparisons: The Orange Day Lily, H. fulva, resembles H. lilioasphodelus in appearance. These two are different from one another because H. fulva lacks scented flowers, has reticulated tepal venation, orange tepals, and wavy inner tepal edges. It also typically does not produce seed. The Hemerocallis genus presently contains over 38,000 identified cultivars, many of which are familiar to gardeners.

Remarks: Yellow Day Only four years after the Upland Garden property was added to the Wildflower Garden, Martha Crone planted the first lily on May 17, 1949. On her 1951 Garden Census, she listed it after adding additional in 1950 and 1951. The MN DNR does not publish county populations because it is mostly an ornamental plant that was introduced for gardens. The species was first brought from Asia to Europe a very long time ago, and from there it traveled to North America.
Toxicity: If properly prepared, the flowers, flower buds, and larger roots are regarded as edible. The neurotoxic Hemerocallin is present in the larger roots, thus they must be carefully cooked. The shoots, leaves, and stalks should be avoided, though, as they contain compounds that might cause hallucinations. Be aware that the white-tailed deer really enjoy the flower buds if you are letting these grow or intentionally growing them in your garden. Otherwise, neither they nor rabbits damage the plants. Deer repellent in liquid form typically works.
