What Causes Powdery Mildew On Lilacs

Every year at the end of the summer, the leaves of my lilacs are covered in a whitish powder. How can I put a stop to this?

When the leaves are near the end of their functional life, it primarily targets them (end of August and September). Because your lilac has already accumulated its energy stores for the following year, it actually doesn’t do much harm to the shrub at that point. Therefore, it has little impact other than visually. And I have a feeling that only you would notice your lilacs are sick. They simply appear to have a grayish hue that most people would mistake for their true coloration from a distance, at least. After all, there are shrubs with gray leaves.

Given its negligible impact on its host, powdery mildew on lilacs really doesn’t need to be treated. You could, at most, try to avoid it by taking the following steps:

  • Pick a variety that is less vulnerable. Almost exclusively the common lilac, also known as the French lilac, is affected by powdery mildew (Syringa vulgaris). The majority of other regularly planted lilacs, including S. meyeri, S. patula, and S. x prestoniae, are rarely harmed by the disease or, if they do, the harm is minimal and barely perceptible.   • The best growing conditions for the shrub include full sun, lots of space, good air circulation, and well-drained, ideally slightly alkaline soil.
  • To increase airflow, prune the plant.
  • When there is a drought, irrigate the soil around the base of the lilac because plants that are stressed by a lack of water are more likely to get powdery mildew.
  • During hot, humid weather (when the disease typically begins), spritz the foliage once a week with plain water. This tends to wipe the spores off the leaves before they begin to germinate. Do this early in the day to give the foliage time to dry before dusk, as doing so after dark may leave the shrub vulnerable to additional illnesses.
  • Avoid fertilizing lilacs, particularly with lawn fertilizer since nitrogen tends to promote rapid but disease-prone growth. In any case, because they aren’t heavy feeders, lilacs thrive in soil that is only moderately fertile.
  • Gather fallen leaves in the autumn, and if you plan to use them as mulch or compost, save the finished product for other plantings rather than using it at the base of the lilac.
  • Each month, apply horticultural oil to the foliage (available in garden centers). Start in late April after the blooms have faded, then go on until October. A little layer of oil can aid in preventing the spores from sprouting. It should be noted that applying oil as a preventative measure is the only way to get rid of powdery mildew once symptoms become apparent. I reserve this approach, which I think of as a last choice, for lilacs that have previously demonstrated a high propensity for the illness and that I have not yet had the time to remove.

Personally, I would just do points 1 and 2: plant disease-resistant lilacs in locations suitable for their healthy development. Otherwise, why combat a sickness that is barely noticeable and doesn’t even endanger the health of its host?
