What works best as a natural hydrangea fertilizer?

Both household compost and animal dung are beneficial fertilizers for hydrangeas to add to the soil beneath the plant. Is mushroom compost suitable for planters?

Compost made from mushrooms can boost the soil’s ability to hold water while also supplying nutrients. For seeds, seedlings, and young plants, mushroom compost can, however, be overused, according to OSU’s Hart.
For seedlings, young plants, and other salt-sensitive plants, such as members of the heath family like rhododendrons, blueberries, and azaleas, fresh, undiluted mushroom compost is too intense, according to Hart.
Hart suggests combining mushroom compost with garden soil before using it on young plants to prevent the death of developing seeds and stress in the heath family. Alternately, you might place an order for mushroom compost in the fall and leave it out in the open all winter long to “cure.”
When applied carefully, Hart added, mushroom compost can also be used as a mulch around shrubs, trees, and perennials. Till the compost into the top six inches of the rather dry garden soil for flower beds and vegetable gardens. Fresh mushroom compost should only make up roughly a fourth of the soil volume in the container for plants grown in containers. Keep in mind that salts may harm plants belonging to the heath family, such as azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons, unless mushroom compost is “cured” first.

It’s a great question because mushroom compost may be found locally for nothing or almost nothing. I’ve had terrific success with mushroom compost myself in the past. Compost made from mushrooms can improve the soil’s ability to retain water while also supplying nutrients. However, there is such a thing as too much good for seeds, seedlings, and young plants. For seedlings, young plants, and other salt-sensitive plants, especially members of the heath family like rhododendrons, blueberries, and azaleas, the soluble salts and other nutrients in fresh, undiluted mushroom compost may be excessively concentrated.
In other words, adding excessive amounts of mushroom compost to your garden may “burn” your plants. Using mushroom compost sparingly at this time of year is the safest course of action. Before applying mushroom compost to young plants, mix it with garden soil for maximum safety. You may also leave your mushroom compost out in the open for a few months to “cure.”
I’ve previously used mushroom compost and had success. The middle of winter, when there was little danger that it would be too hot for my garden, is when I also distributed my mushroom compost.
Similar organics, such as horse manure, cattle manure, chicken manure, and others, should be handled with the same prudence. Weed seeds are one of the main issues with natural manures. Whatever the animal consumed will manifest itself in its feces. The packed manures we purchase have all been sterilized, preventing hundreds of weed seeds from germinating after you put them out in your garden.
A. I’ve read that growing geraniums will deter flies. Any basis for this? Gilroy, J.W.
We must have read the same article about a person who received this recommendation from a German buddy. On his front porch, he tried putting a few geraniums in pots, and it seemed to work. We can all agree that geraniums have a distinct scent, and I suppose flies could find it repulsive. In all honesty, despite having geraniums flourishing on my patio, I haven’t seen any less flies.
