One of the most well-known prairie flowers is perhaps the echinacea, or coneflower. It is native to the prairies of North America and is well-known across the world for its therapeutic benefits and adaptability as a cut flower. Echinacea occurs naturally in ten different species, but the horticulture industry has produced many hybrids. Unlike hybridized echinacea, which can be red, orange, pink, green, or even multicolored, native echinacea only occurs in purple, pale purple, or yellow. But other than color, what distinguishes these new coneflowers? Are there any drawbacks to use synthetic plants instead of native ones?

Is hybrid echinacea a perennial plant?
It is unknown whether cold stratification is necessary for echinacea seed. Scientific research have produced contradictory findings. But Chicago Botanic Garden expert Dr. Jim Ault stratifies his echinacea seeds in the cold for 8 weeks before planting them. Surface-sow the seeds in a pot at 68F if you’re planting them indoors (20C). Compared to direct sowing, seed that is sown indoors or in a greenhouse germinates better. Clonal Echinacea plants are propagated commercially by tissue culture because they cannot be grown from seeds (micro cuttings taken in sterile lab conditions). The crown should be easy to separate by hand, though a knife might be required. Each clump will contain numerous rooted plants. Replant them right away after breaking them apart. Although no one will object if you divide plants for your own use, keep in mind that the majority of new hybrids are patented, making their propagation illegal.
Anecdotal information suggests that cut taproots and fibrous roots of Echinacea can regrow an entire plant. About 25–50% of plants hand-dug for the herbal industry sprout again the following year. All of the species, with the exception of Echinacea purpurea, produce thick, fleshy roots, including taproots, and can be multiplied through root cuttings. In the fall, place a root piece the size of a pencil standing erect (top side up) in a pot.

The herbaceous perennial plant echinacea, also referred to as purple coneflower, has four species and six variants that are all native to North America. Inbreeding takes place when a plant that is genetically related accepts the pollen. The resulting weakling coneflowers frequently die.
According to Wagenius, “we’re acquiring a fresh understanding of why populations of these plants are becoming so limited through our research of coneflower genetics.
Prairie coneflowers are not just threatened by a lack of high-quality pollen. The aphids come next.
Aphids are the scourge of every home gardener, and they are just as bad for wild plants. Shaw and Wagenius found that destroying coneflower habitats can make Echinacea more vulnerable to pests.
They did research on an aphid that prefers to eat the narrow-leaved purple coneflower.
Coneflowers received bad news from the findings. The genetic “fitness” of these plants may be diminished by aphids’ predilection for inbred coneflowers, claims Shaw.
Coneflowers require more than just a large environment. They also require open fires. According to Shaw, fire is essential to the wellbeing of prairie ecosystems.
Lightning-caused fires cause grassland plants to blossom, which may increase genetic variety in the areas where the fires have burned.
However, most of the fires have been put out by roads and cornfields, according to Wagenius, and there isn’t much prairie left to burn.
The effects of fire on tallgrass prairie are the subject of scientific research, and environmental managers are urged to restore controlled fires to the prairie.
Otherwise, purple coneflowers with thin leaves and the tallgrass grasslands they represent may soon go extinct.
White coneflowers are they hybrids?
Although some of the new hybrid coneflowers may not be as dependable in the garden as the traditional Echinacea purpurea, they nonetheless offer attractive colors and forms.
Large, fragrant white blooms are produced by White Swan coneflower. However, it is not always as robust or hardy as the popular purple coneflower, Echinacea purpurea, in all regions of the United States.
