Horticultural or plant-based oils, such jojoba or neem oil, are frequently effective treatments for mild to moderate fungal illnesses. As soon as you see any symptoms of a fungal disease, begin therapy and repeat applications every seven to ten days, or as directed on the label. When you spray, be sure to properly cover the foliage because fungicidal oils only function on touch. Read and heed the warnings and instructions on the label.
Which fungicide works best on zinnias?
Q. For the majority of the summer, my zinnias were gorgeous, but later on, I observed that the leaves were becoming white. Is this a sickness of some kind? How can I stop it from happening?
A. Powdery mildew is a fungus that often develops in hot, muggy weather, like the kind we experienced in the late summer. Lilacs, English oaks, Kentucky bluegrass, calendulas, monarda, phlox, verbena, and zinnias are just a few of the unrelated species that are vulnerable. Powdery mildew comes in several varieties, therefore the mildew that affects lilacs and zinnias is not the same strain.
Although you can apply fungicides to sensitive plants to protect them, I like to pick cultivars that naturally resist powdery mildew. Common zinnia kinds (Zinnia elegans) are the most vulnerable, but spreading zinnia types (Zinnia angustifolia) are resistant. The same may be said for the zinnias in the “Profusion” line, which are a hybrid of Zinnia elegans and Zinnia angustifolia.
There are compromises made, though. While common zinnias have a considerably larger spectrum of colors, spreading zinnias are white and gold in color. Zinnias from the “Profusion” line are available in red, orange, and white. You can choose to put up with the powdery mildew if you want to plant common zinnias because you like their variety of colors. As annuals, zinnias allow you to start over each year. Like yours were this year, they will be lovely for the majority of the summer. Just take them out of your garden when the powdery mildew renders them ugly.
By leaving enough space between your plants, you can lessen powdery mildew issues. Water the soil and try to stay as far away from the foliage as you can when doing so. Your zinnias will probably still acquire powdery mildew when the climatic conditions are favorable for its growth, despite the fact that excellent cultural practices will aid.
Fungicide applications should begin as soon as you observe mildew developing if you want to control it. The most effective use of fungicides is prophylactic use. They will shield new growth from infection rather than “cure” infected leaves. For the management of powdery mildew on zinnias, the labels of Mancozeb, Cleary’s 3336 (thiophanate methyl), and Funginex (triforine) are present.
Gardeners who grow organically can use sulfur or ultra-fine horticultural oil. Make sure to choose horticulture oil that is ultra-fine rather than inactive oil. Applying ultra-fine horticultural oil to herbaceous plants in the summer is safe because it has been refined even further than dormant oil.
Q. I have a mimosa tree in the North Hills that is five years old and in excellent health, but it has never blossomed. Have you got any ideas as to why?
A. Other names for mimosa trees (Albizia julibrissin) are silktrees and powderpuff trees. Although they are frequently misidentified as mimosa trees, they are related to the herbaceous delicate plant, Mimosa pudica.
Your silktree is barely old enough to flower, despite the fact that they are fairly precocious and do so at a young age. If you wait another year, you should receive beautiful pink blossoms that resemble powderpuffs. You omit to mention whether the tree is in full sun, which is where they want to grow to produce the best flowers.
Native to China, Japan, and Iran, silktrees are beautiful. From Maryland to Florida in the south, and from western Texas to eastern Texas, they have become citizens of the United States. They thrive in our climate and can grow nicely, but harsh winters can cause them to perish. Even in the event of a fatal winter, they typically rebloom from the roots. Silktrees are frequently regarded as short-lived trees and are susceptible to vascular wilt and mimosa webworm.
In regions of the United States where they have naturalized, silktrees are categorized as an invasive alien species. They spread through both prolific seed production and root sprouting. Silktrees swiftly overtake regions and supplant natural plants that provide food and shelter for wildlife because they can thrive in extremely poor, dry soil. They also self-seed in our climate, but I haven’t personally observed them to become so numerous that they pose a hazard to regional ecosystems. Please take caution when growing them and be mindful of their potential weedy nature.
How is the zinna illness handled?
When zinnias are properly watered and cared for, the majority of diseases may be avoided. The optimal conditions for zinnia growth are full light all day; however, moderate shade may make them more susceptible to leaf spot infections. To prevent bacterial and fungal illnesses, the foliage must be kept dry. It is therefore best to always water in close proximity to the plants’ bases. If overhead watering is employed, water early in the morning so the leaves have time to dry in the bright sunlight. If plants are watered in the late afternoon or evening, the leaves will remain moist for a longer period of time, increasing the likelihood of disease. These circumstances offer the ideal habitat for the development of bacterial and fungal diseases.
For a year or two, alternate using zinnias with several varieties of bedding plants to lower the risk of disease. To stop the spread of pests and diseases, infected plants should be promptly removed. Remove all plant detritus at the conclusion of the growing season to lessen the spread of fungus disease inoculum (the pathogen responsible for the infection). Diseases will appear less frequently or later the following year as a result. If there has been an epidemic of leaf spot illnesses, do not save seed for sowing the next year since infected seed may also be a source of these diseases.
Powdery Mildew: Powdery mildew is a fungus that predominantly affects plant leaves but can also affect flowers and stems (Golovinomyces cichoracearum). On zinnias, this disease manifests as a powdery, grayish-white coating. Use appropriate cultural practices. However, there are a number of highly effective fungicides available if necessary. These include horticultural oils with baking soda, sulfur, myclobutanil, propiconazole, tebuconazole, and thiophanate methyl, as well as copper-based fungicides. The last four on the list are the best at preventing powdery mildew. Spray plants once a week when disease development is present. To have less of an influence on pollinating insects, always apply fungicides in the late evening. Examples of brands and goods can be found in Table 1. Bacterial Leaf Spot: The causal agent of bacterial leaf spot in zinnias is Xanthomonas campestris pv. zinniae, and the signs of infection are purplish spots that often remain tiny but take on an angular shape. Spots might start to halo in yellow. Following times of leaf wetness, spray plants once a week with a copper fungicide to lower the likelihood of disease because copper fungicides are also effective against many bacterial infections. Examples of companies and items with copper in them may be found in Table 1. Follow the mixing and usage instructions on the label. Always apply pesticides to blooming plants in the late evening. Leaf spot caused by bacteria may be transferred through seed obtained from infected plants.
What causes zinnia fungus?
My zinnias have mold on them. How can I solve this issue and stop it from happening again?
The zinnia is an excellent choice for the summer garden in Southern California since it can withstand the summer heat, produces continuous blooms, and uses less water than many other annuals.
In addition to making the foliage shrink and die, this white coating on the leaves can also harm the flowers by reducing their length of bloom and rendering them unfit for cutting. When it is foggy (like at the coast), when plants are watered from above, when dew persists, and in late summer and early fall when the days are warm and the nights are cool, powdery mildew is more common.
The majority of zinnias with broad leaves and enormous flowers are prone to mildew. A careful selection of varieties and cultural sensitivity can lessen this issue.
Culture-specific standards for zinnias:
* Pick a location with plenty of sun exposure and sufficient drainage. Add a sizable amount of organic amendments and an all-purpose fertilizer before planting.
* Once the weather has warmed up, plant seeds or nursery plants where you wish them to grow (May through July).
Plants grown from seeds are frequently tougher. Only a thin layer of soil should be placed over the zinnia seed since they need sunshine to sprout.
Up until the seeds develop, try to sprinkle the area twice each day. Once this has happened and they are well-established, stop misting them and begin watering them from the ground up to avoid wetting the foliage.
Change from frequent watering to sporadic thorough soaking once the seedlings are 3 to 4 inches tall. (Apply approximately one inch of water each week.)
* Pinch above the third pair of leaves to promote branching. To promote more blooming, remove spent flowers.
Advice for reducing the occurrence of powdery mildew
* Space plants appropriately apart (increased air circulation will decrease mildew and other fungal diseases).
* Try to remove and eliminate sick tissue as soon as it manifests where infection is constrained.
* Consult a California Certified Nursery Professional at your neighborhood nursery or farm supply if you wish to use a fungicide.
* Opt for powdery mildew-resistant types. Large double-flowered cultivars are more susceptible to mildew development, but they typically continue to bloom for a few months before the mildew takes hold.
Three varieties of annual zinnias exist:
ELEGANT ZINNIA These common flowers occur in a variety of strains, ranging from dwarf plants with tiny blooms to huge plants with 5-inch blossoms, and their hues range from deep red to violet to snow white.
This species is especially susceptible to powdery mildew on humid late-summer nights. It typically doesn’t damage the stems or the flowers; only the leaves.
* Z. angustifolia (Z. linearis). These are more compact plants with red, orange, yellow, and white open-faced solitary blooms.
They don’t need the dead blooms removed. The Pinwheel series belongs to this species. They are described as being mildew resistant and are a hybrid of Z. angustifolia and Z. elegans. They have 3 inch-diameter, cherry, orange, salmon, white, and rose-colored flowers. Members of the Star series, such as “Orange Star” and “Star White,” are other cultivars of this plant that have showed some promise of mildew resistance.
* Z. haageana Compared to common zinnias, this species features compact plants with smaller leaves. The ‘Old Mexico’ cultivar has demonstrated resistance to mildew.
Why are my zinnias wilting and turning brown?
Now that you are familiar with zinnias and their popularity, let’s explore the potential causes of your zinnias’ potential garden difficulties. There are numerous reasons why this occurs, and each of them is normally treated differently. Your plant might or might not be able to be saved, depending on the reason why your leaves or blossoms turned brown. Let’s examine each reason in more detail, along with possible solutions.
Alternaria Leaf Spot or Blight
Your plant may have been infected by the fungus Alternaria zinniae if you start to see small, dark, round, reddish spots with white to grayish-white centers on the leaves of your zinnias. Unfortunately, a wide range of flowers are impacted by leaf spots.
These patches will enlarge, take on an uneven shape, and change color from dark red to dark brown or purple. On the interior of the diseased lesion, you could detect dark, concentric circles. As the plant tissue begins to decompose, the spots may eventually turn into holes.
Alternaria leaf spot can cause severely infected zinnia plants to swiftly lose their green leaves and turn brown and shrivel. Brown lesions may also appear on the stems. If stem lesions are severe enough, they can girdle the stem, which will cause the upper part of the plant to wilt and eventually die off since the circulatory system is cut off.
How to Fix:
If they are minor or moderate, fungal infections in Zinnias may usually be handled. Use horticultural oils, such as jojoba or neem oil, to solve the issue. If less effective solutions like neem oil are unsuccessful, a commercially available fungicide can potentially be a possibility.
Powdery Mildew
The fungus that causes powdery mildew is highly prevalent on zinnias in the late stages of the growing season. The leaves will develop a white, powdery growth that will eventually cover the stems and blooms. Typically, powdery mildew spreads up the plant.
At the plant’s base, severely affected leaves start to turn brown and eventually die. Plants that are severely affected will become weak and stop growing.
Like blight, powdery mildew can be treated with neem oil or a commercial fungicide. However, it works best when applied early in the season, before powdery mildew has a chance to develop. You might be forced to pull your badly affected plants and replant them if that is your only option.
Cercospora Leaf Spot
Cercospora leaf spot and Alternaria leaf spot resemble one other strikingly, making them readily confused. Both Alternaria leaf spot and cercospora leaf spot can frequently happen together.
The fungus Cercospora zinniae is what causes cercospora leaf spots, which are rather large, circular, dark purplish, with gray to gray-white centers. As rot advances, the plant tissue may come loose from the cores. Leaves that have been severely diseased will quickly turn brown and shrivel.
A commercial fungicide is used to treat the fungus that causes leaf spot. Neem oil also has potential. When compared to other fungal illnesses, leaf spot is often easier to treat, and if caught early enough, your plant will have a greater chance of surviving.
Lack of Water
Zinnias don’t need a lot of water at first, but there comes a time when they do. It’s probably due to a lack of water if you’ve been facing drought conditions and your zinnias are beginning to perish.
Wilting is one of the first indications that your plants aren’t getting enough water. If the situation is not fixed, the leaves will droop, shrivel, and eventually start to turn brown and die. If the plant is given enough moisture to recover, wilting can be swiftly reversed.
It is probably too late to save the plant if it has already started to turn brown and die from a lack of water. Drought stress can have long-lasting and irreversible consequences on a plant’s growth, even if it survives.
Set up a regular watering routine. Changing your watering regimen should bring them back quickly as long as the plant isn’t going brown. If the leaves on your zinnia are brown and crispy, it’s probably too late to salvage it.
Waterlogged
More frequently, zinnia plants can also become waterlogged and experience problems. Why does this matter? It indicates that either the soil is not draining properly or that the soil has received too much water. While water is essential for plants, oxygen is also necessary for plant roots.
When the soil is waterlogged, the pore space—the area between soil particles—is completely filled with water, leaving the plant roots with little to no access to oxygen. The roots will start to deteriorate from a lack of oxygen, and you’ll start to see the edges of the plant leaves turning brown.
If you’ve been routinely watering your zinnias and you realize this is happening, stop. Drain the soil, please. Always pick a spot in your garden that has good drainage when planting zinnias to avoid problems from wet circumstances.
Since too much water can also be a problem, the answer is similarly straightforward. Avoid overwatering them or amend the soil to make it more permeable. In essence, a plant that is soggy is drowning. The solution is usually as simple as adjusting our water routine.
Frost
Zinnias enjoy heat. They are an annual that enjoys the summer! They therefore don’t withstand the majority of cold temperatures, like many annuals. Your zinnias will continue to bloom long into the fall, but suddenly the first frost of the year will arrive.
Your zinnias will abruptly turn brown overnight as a result of the freezing temperatures when that occurs. Your zinnias are probably done for the season if the frost wasn’t too severe or if another frost doesn’t come around for a while. However, this is not always the case. After all, everything nice has to end.
There isn’t a genuine technique to stop zinnias from disappearing in the winter. Covering the plants in the winter when it becomes too cold is the best approach to prevent severe frost damage. Depending on your environment, your flowers won’t normally blossom past October.
Setting Seed
Zinnias are annuals once more. This indicates that they go through their entire life cycle in a single season or year. The seeds will begin to sprout in late spring, the plant will start to blossom in the summer, and when it has bloomed profusely, it will start to set seed.
Gardeners can prevent this by deadheading the faded flowers to encourage new blooms, but occasionally we could miss a few blossoms or perhaps we’re not bothered with that level of upkeep.
Up until the entire flower head has turned ugly, crunchy, and brown, you’ll see that the flower petals will fade away and turn brown. Not to worry! Simply grasp this withered flower head and gently press it between your fingertips. There are a large number of brown zinnia seeds. One of the few instances when your zinnias turning brown is beneficial is right now!
The life cycle of the zinnia includes setting seed. There isn’t really a cure for this because annual plants finish their life cycle in a full year. However, when it does, it can help you initiate more spring flowers and is actually a wonderful thing!
Bacterial Leaf Spot
This leaf disease is caused by the bacteria Xanthomonas campestris. At first, very small, diffuse, translucent specks with wide, yellowish haloes will form. The patches will gradually start to expand in wet environments.
The spots will then develop a reddish center and take on an asymmetrical circular or angular shape. The lesions could combine to create sizable dead regions. Small brown spots may appear on the flower petals, and if the infection is serious enough, the entire flower head may become disfigured and begin to rot.
Similar to fungus, bacterial leaf spot can be treated. Neem oil, fungicide, and even a baking soda solution can be used to cure it. These remedies are more natural and frequently more accessible than other, less practical, solutions.
Aster Yellows
The phytoplasma that causes aster yellows is spread by leafhoppers. Members of the Asteraceae family, which includes zinnias, are impacted by this organism. Small, deformed flowers and yellow, stunted growth are symptoms.
The plant will start to die back and turn brown as the infection worsens. After infection, the plant will never recover. If you see any of these signs, get rid of the sick plants right away and either burn them or bury them.
It is very challenging to get an aster yellow infection under control. You will probably need to remove the diseased plants from the area if your zinnias have Aster yellow. Since this illness spreads quickly, there is little purpose in attempting to treat it once it has begun. Aster yellow has no known causes, symptoms, or treatments. The plant must be removed, and you must pray that it does not spread to other plants.
