Sclerotinia and Botrytis are related fungi, with Botrytis cinerea being Sclerotinia in its asexual form. When the season shifts from winter to spring, we frequently observe both fungus on affected plants. Dahlia, fuchsia, geranium, cyclamen, exacum, poinsettia, pansy, and lisianthus are extremely susceptible to botrytis blight. Alyssum, petunia, lilies, lobelia, wallflower, pansy, stock, larkspur, and many other bedding, perennial, and cut flower harvests have been particularly affected by Sclerotinia crown rot or blight. Botrytis cinerea infections on some crops are limited to floral spots, whereas on others they can also cause cutting rot, stem rot, and leaf spot. On bedding plants, Sclerotinia spp. commonly causes blight and stem or crown rot (on perennials and cut flowers).

I hardly ever encountered either of these diseases while working in Florida. Since moving back to California ten years ago, I’ve learned a lot more about these viruses that affect our ornamentals. The most efficient fungicides for the prevention and eradication of Botrytis blight, according to our research, are chlorothalonil (Daconil, Syngenta Professional Products, and Spectro, Cleary Chemical), fenhexamid (Decree, SePRO), fludioxinil (Medallion, Syngenta Professional Products), and iprodione (Chipco 26019 and 26GT, Bayer Environmental Science). Rotation for resistance management is rather simple because these four active components belong to diverse chemical classes. Rotation should be the cornerstone of every Botrytis control program because resistance to fungicides is one of the main issues with this disease.

How is botrytis blight treated?

Good hygiene and better growing circumstances can help you prevent gray mold to some extent, but since the spores disperse widely on the wind, full control is challenging. Fungicides can aid in minimizing the harm done to priceless landscape plants. Select a product that is labeled for use on the particular plant type you are treating and for protection against botrytis blight. Store the product in its original container and out of the reach of children. Carefully follow the label directions.

What does peony botrytis look like?

Apply 1-2 Tbsp per gallon of water to all exposed surfaces of the plant at the first sign of disease. Repeat for maximum protection every 1-2 weeks until the risk of illness development is eliminated.

How can botrytis be prevented naturally?

A fungus called Botrytis cinerea (also known as “grey mould”) degrades the quality of flowers like Rosa, Chrysanthemum, Gerbera, and Lisianthus. The origin, season, cleanliness used during processing and storage, weather, and climate control all have an impact on how Botrytis manifests and spreads. On both living and dead plant matter, the fungus grows. The infection begins when microscopic mold spores, which are tiny, travel through the air. It begins as a little white dot (or “pock”) on the flower petals and extends all the way to the base. Over time, it progressively turns brown and eventually loses all of its petals. These spores require moisture to travel. The Botrytis spores can frequently grow swiftly with just condensation on the bud/flower and packaging.

The process is irreversible once it has progressed past the “pock stage” into brown spots. Frequently, the diseased flower petals are manually removed. This does not, however, guarantee that the remaining petals have not already been harmed by the fungal infection. The only treatment left to stop the infection from spreading is to throw the bloom away. Unfortunately, the florist and the customer have little choice but to discard the diseased flowers in order to stop the disease from spreading because the infection begins in an earlier stage of the distribution chain and the spores may have already started to germinate.

after-harvest stage:

  • Preventing both infection and the germination of spores are essential in order to avoid contracting Botrytis. To achieve this, you must keep condensation off of the flower buds and/or blossoms.
  • As much as you can, remove dead plant matter from greenhouses, sorting areas, work rooms, displays, and cold stores.
  • Remove contaminated material from batches right away.
  • Avoid condensation caused by significant temperature swings (repeatedly opening the cold store doors), showering flowers, and flowers remaining wet for an extended amount of time in closed/tight packaging. Set the temperature in the cold store at 10C during the day and 5C at night if the door needs to be opened and shut frequently. A somewhat higher, more constant temperature is preferable over sharp swings.
  • Always be mindful of hygiene, and clean the walls and floors frequently.

Phase of conditioning:

  • Botrytis infection frequently occurs early in the food chain. Observe details when purchasing flowers.
  • Purchase flowers from reliable merchants who have a reputation for excellence.
  • At the time of purchase, check for the presence of the alleged “pocks.”
  • After delivery and while the flowers are being kept cold, pull the packaging materials down to allow the flowers to “breathe” and for the best possible air circulation.
  • Work hygienically by disinfecting and cleaning tables, knives, and cutting equipment at least once a day.

Neem oil with botrytis blight: Does it work?

Formulations containing neem oil, copper, sulfur, and several other compounds work well. For Botrytis blight, get the appropriate fungicide and carefully read the label instructions.

Which fungicide works well on peonies?

A: My three peony plants, all of which flowered this year, are now completely covered with black patches. I looked online and found advice to “take off any sick growth” and wait to mow the lawn until fall. What should I do because mine are so diseased right now? Do I take it off just above ground and treat it with something, let it alone, or what?

A: It’s too late to use any sprays at this point to still benefit this season. The good news is that peonies typically survive this type of sickness and blossom for another year.

Your plants may have phytophthora blight, a fungal disease that results in leaves with black spots, stems with black streaking, and leaves that frequently turn crimson in the summer. When an infection is severe enough, the leaves nearly completely turn black, coil up, and eventually die.

The plant isn’t helped by dead foliage. Cut off any foliage that has totally dried out or is almost there and remove it from the yard. Similar rules apply to any fallen leaves. The amount of disease spores remaining to re-infect the following year is decreased by removing affected tissue.

As long as you can, leave any foliage that is still somewhat green and tolerable to look at alone. The more live leaves you can leave alone, the better, as they aid the plant in reviving itself.

You might as well take the plants down right away, throw away the chopped foliage, and give them a nice wash if they are just looking awful all over. This season, new leaves occasionally appear. The plants have a very good chance of returning in the spring of next year, even if nothing else happens this year.

Spraying a fungicide every 7 to 10 days from the time new shoots appear until flower buds form is the suggested course of therapy. Mancozeb is thought to be among the most efficient.

Another widely accessible fungicide that can aid peonies with blight is chlorothalonil (Daconil). However, it only works from spring till early summer. The optimal use of fungicides is in disease prevention, not disease treatment.
