Echinacea, sometimes known as coneflowers, is a hardy perennial in the daisy family (Asteraceae). They are indigenous to the eastern and central United States, from Colorado to Texas in the south and the Great Lakes in the north. Here is how to cultivate this native American plant in your garden.
About Coneflowers
These quick-growing plants have a height range of 2 to 4 feet, blossom from midsummer till the first fall frost, and self-sow profusely. Coneflowers are named for their elevated, conical centers that draw bees and butterflies. The seed heads draw songbirds like goldfinches once they blossom. Once they are established in a conventional garden or a meadow of wildflowers, coneflowers enjoy the heat and are trouble-free.
The majority of echinacea species are purple (E. purpurea), but there are up to nine naturally occurring varieties that are yellow or purple (E. paradox). More sizes and colors are available with hybrids, but there are drawbacks as well: many of them lack genetic diversity and are sterile, which means they cannot produce viable seed.
The lower stem of the plant, which is frequently prickly, is referred to by its genus name Echinacea, which is derived from the Latin word for hedgehog, echinus. Coneflowers are so named because their elevated, cone-shaped centers are filled with seeds that draw butterflies. After bloom, leave the seed heads on the plant to draw in songbirds like goldfinches! They are less susceptible to deer than other floral plants since they are native plants with thorny stems.
When grown in large groups, coneflowers are spectacular, especially when they are a combination of different colors.
Coneflowers prefer soil that drains well and direct sunlight. Although coneflowers can thrive in a variety of soil types, nutrient-rich soil is where they bloom at their finest. 12 to 15 inches of loose soil should be added, along with a 2 to 4 inch layer of compost or aged manure. When to Plant Coneflowers
Coneflowers are typically purchased as little plants that will soon bloom. Planting time for these should be in the spring, early summer, or fall.
- Coneflowers should be planted while they are young and will bloom in the spring or early summer.
- Eight to ten weeks prior to the last spring frost date, seeds can be started inside. Alternately, plant them outside after the soil has warmed to at least 65°F (18°C). Plants grown from seeds are unlikely to blossom for two to three years.
- Note: Coneflower plants will rapidly self-seed if you don’t clip them back.
- Coneflowers should only be divided or moved in the spring or fall.
How to Plant Coneflowers
- Coneflowers should be spaced 1 to 3 feet apart, depending on the variety’s mature size.
- Dig a hole that is almost twice as wide as the pot if you are planting from one. The root ball of the plant should be level with the soil surface when it is placed. To the top of the root ball, fill in.
- At planting, give it plenty of water.

Coneflowers can withstand drought, although young plants require water from time to time, and more frequently if the spring is particularly dry.

- Fertilizer is rarely needed in native soil. When you plant, make sure your soil has a lot of organic matter.

- Optional: Think about allowing late-season flowers to develop on the plants. Birds will be drawn to the seed heads, which will encourage self-seeding. If you prefer not to have self-seeding, deadheading will stop it. Cut the dead flower back to a leaf where you can see a bud that is about to swell in order to deadhead.

Growing Coneflowers in Pots
Coneflowers are often grown in the ground as perennial plants, but you can grow them in pots if the pots are deep enough to accommodate the plant’s taproot. Use containers with drainage holes that are at least 2 or 3 gallons in size. For drainage, spread crushed gravel in the pots’ bottoms. With potting mix, halfway fill the pot. Slow down. Spread the roots out and plant the root ball an inch below the container’s rim. Gently press down the soil after adding it gradually until it is level with the top of the root ball. Deep breathing.
- Place pots in full morning sun and half afternoon shade after keeping them in partial shade for two to three days.
- Always deeply water the soil when it feels dry to the touch. There is a risk of fungus from water on leaves.
- Every few weeks, fertilize the soil with a water-soluble 10-10-10 product.
- For sustained flowering, remove the dead flowerheads slightly below the flower’s base.
- When plant development slows in the fall, trim plants to the soil level to overwinter them.
- Move to a spot with low to moderate indirect light and a cool (40 to 50 °F) temperature.
- Every few weeks, check the soil and water it lightly if the top 3 inches are dry.
- If new growth starts to sprout in the spring, relocate to a warmer (60 to 70 °F) and more sunny spot. Moving the plant aids in preparing it for life in the spring and summer outdoors.
- Avoid watering leaves from above since this can promote fungus on the leaves. Instead, hydrate the soil. If you notice any bugs or aphids, use a neem oil solution spray or an insecticidal soap.

Is it simple to grow coneflowers from seed?
Many gardeners like growing purple coneflowers. Botanically known as Echinacea purpurea, this perennial native to North America blooms in late summer with vivid magenta blossoms that attract bees and butterflies.
However, there are several cultivars and variations of this plant that produce blooms in a wide variety of hues, including white, yellow, orange, and red. The straight species is my particular favorite. There are numerous additional Echinacea species, and each one has its own distinct qualities.
Coneflowers in pots are frequently seen in neighborhood nurseries and garden centers, but if you have a sizable yard to cover with these vibrant perennials or if you enjoy a good gardening challenge, you could think about starting them from seed rather than buying plants. Coneflowers can be grown from seeds with the proper method. You can either save the seed from your own plants or a friend’s plants, or you can buy coneflower seeds from a variety of seed suppliers.
Once you have the seeds, you can try a few different techniques to boost the likelihood of success and the rate of seed germination.
Many diverse perennial seeds must undergo a procedure known as cold-moist stratification in order to emerge from dormancy. For the most part, many perennials have a tough seed coat and genetic programming that prevent the seeds from sprouting at the incorrect period (say, during a mid-winter warm spell). The seeds must be subjected to an extended period of cold temperatures and moist conditions in order to germinate.
Like many other perennials, coneflower seeds do not require this dormancy-breaking period of freezing temperatures in order to germinate, but treating the seeds with a cold-moist stratification will greatly increase the germination rates. Coneflower seeds have significantly higher germination rates after being exposed to 40 degrees F for around two months.
The first step is to combine the seeds with some damp sand, place the mixture in a plastic bag with a zipper cover, and refrigerate the bag for 8 to 10 weeks. Plant the seeds outdoors in the garden or indoors under grow lights when spring arrives.
The seeds can also be planted in potting soil-filled containers or flats, watered, and then covered with a clear plastic bag and stored in the refrigerator for 8 to 10 weeks. After the critical period has passed, remove the container from the refrigerator and place it in a room that is about 70 degrees under grow lights. Remove the plastic after approximately 10 to 14 days, when the seeds begin to sprout, and continue to care for the seedlings until they are big enough to be transplanted into the garden.
The last and most straightforward approach is to just scatter the seeds outside in the fall. Place the seeds where you want the mature plants to grow, then enclose the area with a small ring of fencing to prevent animals from discovering the seeds. The seeds will naturally be exposed to the proper temperatures for the appropriate amount of time, and when they are good and ready in the spring, they will germinate.
Coneflower seeds can be grown without being exposed to a cold-moist stratification, and you’ll probably achieve an OK rate of germination. However, by using these suggestions, 100% germination is a straightforward goal.

Can coneflower seeds be sown directly?
When direct sowing Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) seeds in the late fall, place them 1/4″ deep and lightly compact the soil. Before straight sowing the seed for spring planting, mix the seed with damp sand and store it in the refrigerator for 90 days. Maintain the soil’s moisture level till germination. Harvesting: To gather fresh flowers, cut long stems from newly opened flowers and quickly submerge them in water. Remove any leaves that would fall into the water below.
Saving Seeds: After flowering, the flowers’ center cones will grow into a prickly seed head. Purple Coneflower seeds should be collected as soon as possible in order to prevent loss because songbirds like goldfinches enjoy eating them. Cut off the seed heads as soon as the seeds may be easily loosened from the head. Store the Purple Coneflower seed in a cool, dry area after lightly rubbing them to release the seed.
Before planting, should I soak the coneflower seeds?
Both sides of my shady front-yard path are adorned with columbines. The small group of people on one side were purchased as plants from a catalog, whereas I raised the people on the other side from a handful of shiny, black seeds to a swath of long-spurred blossoms. For the best results, consider the plant’s natural habitat
A lot of seeds are easy to grow. You just need to rake up some loose soil and disperse the seeds. Other seeds, however, will do better in more regulated environments or with special care that simulates the environment of their natural habitats.
For example, following a time of damp cooling in a dark environment, many plants whose original habitats have cold winters sprout most easily. Winter gives them what they need in the wild. If the seeds germinated in the late summer or fall only to die from the cold of winter, it would be a waste of energy and quite anti-Darwinian. Instead, they endure the harsh winter. The seed coverings relax during the seeds’ profound sleep, and when springtime warmth and moisture arrive, they burst into growth.
Other seeds, particularly those that live in deserts, may only need a brief period of rain (or manufactured rain, often known as the garden hose or a good overnight soak) to completely open their seed coats.
To get the most out of hot-climate wildflowers, though, may require more drastic measures. Fire may be the decisive factor in the Southwest. Texas bluebonnets (Lupinus texensis) were very difficult for me to grow until one year when a kitchen fire burnt an envelope of seeds. I threw the burned seeds onto the bank, thinking that was the last of them. Naturally, each and every one of them grew into a strong, healthy plant.
How do you determine which seed need which? Start by reading the package. The amount of information that is crammed into a seed packet’s back is comparable to having an encyclopedia of plants at your disposal. Planting dates, duration until bloom, guidelines, and specific requirements Even if you have to use a magnifying glass to read it, everything is there.
Commercially obtained seeds are not exposed to the natural cycle of the seasons—cold, hot, and rainy—and they may need to be coaxed into growing. Here are three quick tricks that can trick almost any reluctant seed.
Speed sprouting by presoaking seeds
The key to my success with seed starting is presoaking. The seed embryo is exposed to moisture during this straightforward process, which is the main driver of growth. I add seeds to hot tap water that has been poured into a shallow container, spread them out, and let them stand for up to 24 hours. If the seeds are soaked for too long, they may rot. Water seeps through the seed coat, causing the seeds to enlarge as the embryo inside grows larger.
I presoak almost everything, with the exception of the smallest seeds. But I usually take care to wait until the night before planting my seeds in containers or the garden to presoak them. Once the seeds have swollen, immediately plant them in damp soil and continue to water them until they are up and growing. This easy method can cut the typical germination time by several days.
The titles of the other two methods, stratification and scarification, are so intimidating that many gardeners avoid using them because they are occasionally required to break the dormancy of obstinate seeds. But these are just fancy phrases for straightforward methods.
Some seeds need moist cold; others need nicking
“Stratification is the process of deceiving seeds into believing that it is winter by providing a time of moist cold. Pre-soaking the seeds before placing them in a sandwich-size, zip-top plastic bag with damp seed-starting material halfway inside can help the seeds germinate indoors in the spring. Place the bag in a quiet area of the refrigerator after adding another inch of wet medium to the top of the seeds (at 34F to 41F). Weekly checks for germination are recommended. When the seeds start to form roots, delicately move them into pots by carefully taking each seedling out of the bag with a spoon to keep dirt around the new roots and prevent upsetting delicate new growth. After that, treat them like any other seedling.
Cold-treated seeds can also be sown outside in the fall or kept in a refrigerator through the fall and winter, then sown in pots and started indoors or outdoors in the spring. For fall or winter outdoor seed starting, put the seeds in pots as usual, but cover the top of each pot with a thin layer of very fine gravel to prevent soil erosion from rain. It works nicely with washed, naturally colored (undyed) aquarium gravel. Make a level layer of damp sand wherever you plan to overwinter the pots—in a cold frame or against a garage wall. Keep the pots close together and bury them to the rims. They are protected from extreme cold and kept from toppling over and spilling thanks to this. Move the pots to a protected nursery location once the seeds have begun to sprout.
The third method, “Scarification is the process of nicking the seed coat with a knife or piece of sandpaper to allow moisture to enter the seed’s embryo. I use the knife if a seed is large and I can’t dent it with a fingernail. It is best to use a rat-tail file or a small, sharp pocketknife blade. Avoid being overly aggressive; only a very small piece or slice of the seed coat needs to be removed. The seed coats can also be worn away by lining a jar with a sheet of sandpaper that has been trimmed to fit, screwing on the lid and shaking the jar like a maraca. Just before planting, scarify the seeds. Long-before-planting seeds run the risk of drying out and becoming useless when they finally get to the soil.
It’s easy to care for seeds planted in pots
I usually start the majority of my seeds in pots, especially slow-growing perennials and annuals. The seedlings are easier to take care of, and weeding is not necessary. A slow-growing plant can be identified by looking at the seed packet. You have a slow starter if it suggests beginning the seeds inside 8 to 10 weeks before the last date of frost.
According to conventional wisdom, seeds should be sown densely in a flat or tray, and then individual seedlings should be “prick out for repotting into larger pots.” However, I favor starting a small number of seeds in pots that are at least 21/4 inches in diameter in order to completely avoid transplanting. I either put the entire cluster in the garden or use scissors to thin the seedlings as they emerge.
Soilless mixes help prevent seedling disease
I use a commercial “soilless seed-starting mix,” which is a combination of sterilized materials like vermiculite and milled sphagnum moss. I rarely experience damping-off disease, a fungus that kills seedlings by causing them to wither and wilt. I transfer all but a little amount of the mixture into a big bowl and thoroughly saturate it with warm water before planting. After that, I gently load the medium into the plastic pots I collected from my previous periodic nursery shopping sprees into the containers to a depth of 1/2 inch below the rim. Prior to sterilization, used containers should be cleaned by soaking in a solution of one part bleach to nine parts water.
When the pots are ready, I carefully shake three or four seeds into each one, leaving at least a half-inch between each one, and snip off a corner of the seed packet (or its inner glassine envelope of seeds). Small pieces of stiff white paper are folded in half, seeds are poured into the strip, and then the paper strip is lightly tapped to distribute the seeds. This method gives me better control because the smallest seeds can slide out too rapidly. If the seeds are big enough to see, I gently press each one into the moist, soilless mix with my fingers, making sure it’s dry to prevent seeds from sticking to it. I cover the seeds with a thin layer of the saved seed-starting mix using a sieve rather than burying them. I don’t cover seeds at all if they need sunshine to germinate. I then write a label with the name of the plant and the date on it, pushing the marker into the pot so that it is flush with the edge.
I cover the pots with a sheet of plastic wrap, glass, or clear plastic to maintain moisture if I anticipate the seeds to germinate in a few days or weeks, and I check on them every day. I take off the covering once sprouts start to show. I start a lot of seeds; I’m not concerned about giving them bottom heat to hasten germination; I just want to make things straightforward. I don’t bother covering them if the seeds are going to take a while to germinate—some stratified seeds may spend months in a pot before sprouting—and just take extra care to keep the soil moist.
I place the pots on a cookie sheet or another shallow tray after they have been planted so that they may be moved to a cold frame or another area for seed-starting with ease. The trays also make it simpler to water the bottom. Keep the seed-starting material moist to promote faster germination; I either mist the pots from above with a very fine mist or pour water into the tray and allow the pots soak it up from the bottom.
