How To Ship Tulips

Every year, a backyard cutting garden can yield an abundance of stunning blooms, and happy gardeners may want to share their bounty with loved ones, even if they live far away. If you box your fresh flowers carefully and include a method to keep them moist, you may mail fresh flowers across the country and have them arrive unharmed.

Pick your flowers the day before you intend to transport them. Pick flowers that are either still in the bud or barely open. After being harvested, many flowers, such as lilies, gladioli, narcissus, and tulips, will bloom. While you prepare the shipping box, if required, quickly submerge the flowers in water and store them in a cool, dark location.

The flower stalks should be tied together using rubber bands or thread. Put the flowers in a position where they will move the least amount possible.

Put the flowers in a thick, solid cardboard box and surround the arrangement on all sides with crumpled newspaper or packing peanuts. Use just regular cornstarch peanuts; biodegradable ones could “melt” into the flowers or the box due to dampness.

Sending out fresh flowers means mailing them as early in the day as you can. Use two- or overnight shipping.

Inform the recipients that a shipment is on its way and will require their quick attention. The stems of cut flowers should be recut and put in a vase filled with cold water as soon as they are unpacked from their packaging.

Use a cardboard box with a few inches of room all the way around the bouquet. Boxes made expressly for shipping cut flowers may be available for purchase or donation from florists.

When shipping cut flowers, ice or freezer blocks should not be used. The blossoms could be harmed if the hefty object moved during transportation.

How are flowers kept fresh throughout shipping?

The flower stems should be fastened to the box or an insert inside the box using cable ties, cleats, or bands. To prevent the flowers from shifting while in transit, make sure the ties or bands are sufficiently tight. Packing paper, newspaper, or other cushioning material should be placed in the additional area surrounding the flowers.

How are tulips moved around?

The expectation for the 2002 forcing season’s Dutch tulip production is excellent. The late spring temperatures in the growing areas were chilly and ideal for a robust yield. Now that the bulbs have been removed from the ground, they have been peeled, sized, and packaged. Depending on their intended purpose, many of them are already on their way to customers in the United States and Canada, while others will be shipped throughout the fall.

Flower bulbs are now routinely transported across the seas from Holland to your greenhouse. The globalization of horticulture is accelerating, and flower bulbs represent global commerce. But not that long ago, bulbs were transported in ways that we now view as cruel. I’ll outline the methods and technology used to transport bulbs from Holland to North America in this essay. I’ll also suggest doable actions that farmers can take to keep their high-quality forcing bulbs.

I was all too familiar with the bulky, 50-lb. crates of Easter lilies when I was a kid working in my family’s business. Imagine the 200+ kg. wooden containers used by Dutch bulb exporters into the middle of the 20th century. These cartons were loaded by crane into the stuffy bowels of steam ships for the ocean voyage up until the mid-1950s. After some thought, it becomes clear that it was almost a miracle that any of these bulbs survived and thrived at all. The product likely suffered from poor temperature management, inadequate ventilation, and rodent damage. However, a successful flowering does highlight the incredible tolerance these bulbs possess.

By the 1960s, unitized “containers were quickly replacing steamships as the primary transportation unit. A flexible and seamless global delivery network for all products was made possible by these stackable and manageable modules. In the example of bulbs, a container might be loaded in Holland, transported to the United States by boat, then put on a dolly for delivery to the customer on the East Coast or transported by freight train for delivery to the West Coast or Midwest.

To ensure that the bulbs received fresh air throughout the journey, these containers were mechanically vented. Furthermore, in order to change the climate in each particular container, portable refrigeration units were created during the late 1960s. As a result, the container’s temperature and air quality were better controlled. Additionally, it permitted the shipping of bulbs at various temperatures. Faster turnaround times at each port, with containers often leaving the port less than 24 hours after arrival, are another significant benefit of container-based transportation.

Tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, and crocus are examples of spring-flowering rooting room bulbs that are generally compact, resist water loss, have low respiration, and can withstand a range of temperatures. Spring-flowering bulbs initially seem “dormant.” In actuality, they are constantly and gradually growing and developing—they are not inert. The final forcing performance and quality of the flower or plant is greatly impacted by this growth and responsiveness to the environment. In other words, the environmental factors (particularly temperature) to which bulbs are exposed after digging directly affect forcing behavior.

Due to the possibility of equipment failure during shipping and the fact that flower bulbs constantly perceive their surroundings, flower bulbs are prone to several issues when traveling from Holland. The main challenges that North American soldiers face are frequently tied to issues with transportation. Inadequate airflow, which can cause an ethylene buildup, inadequate air temperature, and moisture condensation on bulbs can all cause issues that manifest as physiological anomalies (problems with flower development) or biotic damage (diseases and insects).

The transportation of all perishable goods, from bulbs to shrimp to tuna, has been transformed by the development of temperature-controlled shipping containers. From very early August for dry sales in retail outlets through January or February as pre-cooled bulbs for cut flower forcing, tulips may be received in good shape and ready to perform. This covers a period of up to seven months, which is longer than that of any other ornamental crop.

Time. Approximately nine days are needed for the ocean to travel from Rotterdam to Newark, New Jersey. The process of loading the container at the exporter’s plant, moving it to Rotterdam, securing it there, and then repeating the process once at the destination all take extra time. Depending on the location and manner, this can take anywhere from a single day to more than six. As a result, bulbs are confined in containers for at least two weeks and, in the event of a West Coast transit via the Panama Canal, up to four weeks.

Temperature. Any time within a six- to seven-month span is acceptable for tulip transportation. Shipping temperatures can range from 631/4 F (171/4 C) down to 401/4 F (51/4 C), depending on the intended usage of the product. Thinking about the operational

ethylene and ventilation. Fusarium is the main disease issue tulip growers in North America are dealing with. The basal region of the bulbs are affected by this disease, which is known to be more problematic if field temperatures are high in the final 3–4 weeks before digging. A few large cultivars are also more prone; for instance, “Prominence” and its offspring are particularly Fusarium sensitive.

We recognize that Fusarium is a transportation concern when we realize how much ethylene the Fusarium fungus produces. To get rid of ethylene from the air around the bulbs, you should ventilate containers and unpack and ventilate bulbs as soon as they arrive at your plant. It is important to realize that the ethylene released by a single “fusarium bulb, both in the shipping case and pot or forcing box, might harm many nearby bulbs. Several research projects are currently being conducted in Holland and at Cornell University to look into further impacts of ethylene during transportation and potential mitigation strategies.

Tulips that have been damaged by ethylene show uneven, stunted growth, flower bud wilting, or total necrosis before the bud even leaves the bulb. For instance, in the early fall, dried bulbs with the disorder known as “kernrot” can be observed. The process starts with the “opening of the tip of the tulip bulb” as a result of ethylene-stimulated shoot growth. Mites can then crawl into the bulb and down to the growing new bud at that point. The bud actually perishes as a result of their feeding. The resultant plant, when pressed, has one to three leaves but neither a tall stem nor flowers. Simply a blackened stump, the bud is.

Ethylene exposure causes gummosis, a different condition in tulips. Gummosis is the development of a tough, transparent, brownish-tan material on the bulb’s exterior. A shipment that has a significant percentage of gummosis tulips is highly suspicious, and your supplier should be informed.

Humidity. Another crucial element for a trouble-free bulb shipment is the relative humidity inside a shipping container. Warm, humid air entering the container during ventilation might cause water to condense on the bulbs, especially with precooled shipments at 481/4 F (91/4 C). When this occurs, it is crucial to start drying with fans as soon as you get to the warehouse. Failure to do so may lead to further disease-related issues.

In a very complicated, global sector, there are a number of specific processes that must be followed in order to force bulbs successfully. In this post, we looked at a few of the processes that go into this international trade. Even now, the technology mentioned makes it possible to transfer more bulbs from other bulb-producing nations, particularly those in the Southern Hemisphere. The domestic forcer may not need to know the specifics of bulb transportation, but it is important to understand what factors can affect a bulb’s proper and reliable execution throughout transportation.

How are tulip bulbs transported?

Put the bulbs into a box filled with loose sand, peat moss, vermiculite, or another suitable storage medium. Send them out right away by mail, choosing a delivery option that gets them there in three days or fewer.

Remove the Plant From the Soil

It is preferable to export most plants as bare roots as opposed to in their pots. Put on a pair of gardening gloves and carefully remove the roots of your plant from the pot, shaking off any extra soil. It’s not necessary to totally rinse the roots because part of the soil residue will keep the plant happy and healthy during transportation and potential repotting.

Wrap Roots With a Moist Paper Towel

Wrap the plant’s roots with a paper towel that has been lightly moistened with clean, room-temperature water. You can wrap your plant in numerous layers of paper towels if you’re transporting it a long way. The plant will receive water along the journey as a result of the paper’s gradual moisture release.

Wrap With Plastic Wrap

Wrap the paper towels and roots in a sheet of plastic wrap to keep everything in place. You might also put the plant in a plastic bag as an alternative. This will keep the moisture within and act as insulation for the roots’ delicate tissues.

Secure the Plant

By using rubber bands or wrapping the entire bundle in newspaper, secure the plant’s top. Both strategies will control wayward growth and guard against plant damage.

Place Plant Inside Box

Your plant should be packed in a robust corrugated cardboard box that can withstand any damage from vigorous handling. Find a box that is beautiful and sturdy to ensure that your plant gets to its destination intact.

Fill Extra Space

Finding a box that properly fits your goods can be challenging. After you’ve inserted your plant inside the sturdy corrugated box, fill any remaining space with newspaper or packing paper to provide additional padding. Your plant won’t have any room to move during handling if you do it this way. Useless paper, packing peanuts, or bubble wrap are more options.

Tape the Box Closed

Tape all box edges tightly with sturdy packing tape before sealing the lid. Add a lot of tape to the box’s edges to reinforce them if you’re concerned about how the product will be handled.

Tip

Punch a few ventilation holes in the box if your area is warm or if you’re moving the plant to a warm location. Make a few small holes in the box’s sides using your fingertips. Avoid doing this in cold weather because the cold may harm your plant.

Label the Box

Label the box “Live Plants,” “Fragile,” or “Perishable” using permanent ink so that shipment handlers can easily read it. This won’t ensure that the individuals handling your box will handle it delicately, but it might persuade some of them.

If you’re recycling a box, write the return address and mailing address on the outside and take off or black out any previous shipping labels.

Ship Your Plant

It’s time to transport your plant now that it has been beautifully prepared and boxed for travel. If your plant satisfies the USPS’s shipping regulations, you can always drop it off at the post office for delivery. Select priority mail. Because the plant is in such a vulnerable position while being transported, you should try to cut the shipping time as much as you can.

Another option is to use a private delivery firm, FedEx, UPS, or both. Although some will cost more than others, all will offer rapid shipping alternatives. Finding a service that can ship your plant swiftly and within your budget is the key.
