Sweet peas are a common plant in flower gardens and cottage garden planting plans because of their strong fragrance and popularity among gardeners. These flowers are undoubtedly not to be missed because they are simple to grow and come in a range of colors.
A brief history of sweet peas
The first sweet pea was found by Sicilian monk Brother Franciscus Cupani in the 1690s. Brother Cupani sent seeds to other breeders around the world in an effort to share his discovery. In the UK, Dr. Robert Uvedale went on to create other variants, including the well-known Cupani and Painted Lady.
With the development of numerous new variations, the popularity of sweet peas has only increased. The Spencer variety, with its long stems and brilliant flowers, is the most well-known. Early in the 20th century, displays were devoted to just one variety of sweet peas as their popularity had reached a fever pitch. Many prizes were available, not the least of which was $1,000 from a national newspaper in 1911!
Are sweet peas actually an edible pea?
No. Sweet peas are actually peas because they belong to the Leguminosae family. Lathyrus odoratus, the Greek name, literally translates to fragrant pea. However, if you do have these, make sure they’re in a vase rather than on a plate.
Convulsions, temporary paralysis of the legs, and unconsciousness can all result from eating any component of the sweet pea plant. So cultivate sweet peas far from the kitchen so that you may enjoy the color and smell!
Top growing tips for sweet peas
- During dry spells, feed the plants once every two weeks with liquid feed and water.
- Verify the plants’ support is adequate and make any necessary improvements while tying the stems with soft rope.
- Remove sideshoots and tendrils to strengthen the main stem by doing so.
- If buds begin to fall, this is likely the result of a weather change and will end as things settle.

- You will receive more flowers the more you pick, so pick frequently, ideally every two to three days.
- If you do notice any seed pods growing, remove them right away. The plant will stop flowering as soon as it believes it has safeguarded the next generation by producing seeds. So, keep your gardening shears close at hand!
- Early in the morning or late at night are the finest times to choose. Avoid plucking during the hottest part of the day since they will rapidly become dehydrated and the vase life will be shortened.
- Leave the stems as long as you can after making a clean cut. Immediately submerge the stems in a bucket of ice water until their necks are covered. Before transferring the stems to vases, keep the bucket in the shade.
- Arrange for a friend or neighbor to come by and pick your sweet peas while you’re away on vacation. They will receive beautiful free flowers for the home, and the plants will continue to blossom.

How can I revive my dead peas?
You may find wilting, yellowing, browning, or other diseased or spotty pea plants. If your pea plant is wilting due to dry soil, it may only require water. Peas dislike extremely hot weather, and the plant will wilt if the soil is too dry. If this is the case, give the plants plenty of water, and they should recover in a day or two. To assist preserve moisture in the soil, it is recommended to water peas in the early morning and put mulch around the stem.
Pea wilt, a group of soil-borne illnesses, can affect pea plants. If watering the pea plant doesn’t make it healthy again, it probably has one of these ailments. Verify the plants for any discoloration towards the base of the stem, and examine the leaves for brittleness.
Wilted plants should be completely removed from the garden and burned afterward. Since it is a soil disease, you might want to think about replacing some of the garden’s soil. Wilt-resistant pea plants can aid in preventing the spread of these diseases in the garden.
My sweet peas are dying; why?
The first several weeks of the flowering season are often when buds drop, and temperature changes are the main culprit (hot days and cold nights). When touched, the buds become yellow or green and loosen.
Bud drop is largely unavoidable; all you can do is wait till the weather settles and the nights become warmer. Plants shouldn’t be fed until the buds begin to form and bloom. This issue can occur more than once in a season.
Bud drop can also be brought on by watering with a cold hosepipe; if at all possible, use water that has been sitting for 24 hours. Till it passes, keep as much growth, including tendrils, as you can.
Pollen Beetle
These are the little black beetles that enter the flower’s “keel” and emerge onto your window when it is taken inside.
Again, since these beetles are originating from fields of oil seed rape, there isn’t much you can do about them (they are sometimes called The Rape Beetle). The majority of the beetles will likely emerge onto the window if you try to store the cut flowers overnight in a shed or garage with a window. Another option is to try hiding a yellow bucket of water amid the garden’s plants. This will draw a lot of beetles out, and they will drown if they fall into the water.
Yellow leaves on the bottom of the plant
Overwatering or using a cold hosepipe to water the plant are the primary culprits for the plant’s lower leaves beginning to turn yellow. Additionally, it might be brought on by the use of compost that is overly rich and damages plant roots. This frequently occurs in planters that have too many plants.
Container Growing
If growing sweet peas in containers, make sure there is at least 10″ of space between each plant and that the container is as deep as it can be. They battle over the food in the container because they are so hungry and thirsty, and if they go too close to one another.
Powdery Mildew

Saving sweet pea seeds
Starting in early September, seed can be harvested. Till they have taken on the color of a paper bag, leave the seed pods on the plants. When you’re ready to sow them, gather them on a dry day, separate them from their pods, and store them in paper bags in a dry location.
Can sweet peas regrow?
Although Lathyrus odoratus, the most popular sweet pea variety, is an annual, there are also perennial forms available (Lathyrus latifolius).
- 1. Annual sweet peas are plants that go through their entire life cycle in a single growing season. They grow, produce seeds, and perish within the span of a year, just like other annual crops. The next year, you must replant new plants in your garden if you want to grow them again. The majority of sweet pea species are annuals.
- 2. Perennial sweet peas: These flowers reappear each year. After the growth season is over, you don’t need to replant them because they will keep growing for a longer period of time. Although there are fewer types of perennial sweet peas available and they tend to lack the traditional sweet pea aroma, they may be simpler to grow.
Why do my peas seem to be going bad?
If your plants don’t have any known diseases, your dead peas may be the result of an environmental problem. That might indicate a problem with nutrients, water, or crowding.
Provide More or Less Water
The leading cause of dying pea plants in terms of the environment is inadequate and excessive irrigation. To live, all plants need a specific water balance. Root rot and other fungi infections are brought on by too much water. Your plants will wilt and eventually die from a lack of water.
Start by using your finger to measure the moisture content of the soil. It’s time to water if the soil is dry two inches down. Watering is not necessary for soil that is wet two inches down.
Be aware that yellow leaves won’t revert back to green; they will remain yellow if your plants are suffering from water stress. Your revised watering schedule will be effective until the yellowing stops progressing.
Add Potassium
Phosphorus and potassium are the two nutrients that peas require the most. You cannot add more phosphorus to the soil once your plants have begun to grow, but you may give your pea plants a boost by using a potassium fertilizer.
Before you plant your peas in the garden, make sure to add compost or composted manure. To increase potassium, side-dressing your peas with compost is beneficial. You might also want to add wood ash or rock powders that have been mined.
Remove a Few Plants
Consider using a pair of sterilized gardening shears to remove a couple of your plants if they are too densely planted. It can seem paradoxical to do this because fewer plants should produce more, right?
Higher yields are produced by healthy plants, which also require appropriate air circulation to stave against fungus diseases. Allow more space around your plants!
Why are my peas wilting and turning yellow?
The management of all fungus-related causes of yellowing pea plants is essentially the same: Choose seed varieties that are disease-resistant. Plant in raised beds or in soil that drains properly. Mulch will stop rain from spreading spores from the soil to the plants.
Why are my sweet peas acting up?
It goes without saying that the sweet pea’s blossoms are the only reason they gained notoriety and became the highlight of every garden in Victorian England. Their gorgeous blossoms and alluring smell have enchanted many hearts on both sides of the pond since they were originally crossbred in 1695. So you begin to question your gardening abilities when your sweet peas refuse to bloom. However, the sweet peas are acting up, not you.
Sweet peas can be struggling to bloom if they aren’t receiving enough light. The size and quantity of the flowers may be affected by the quality of the soil and nutritional deficiencies. Another explanation could be because the old blossoms were permitted to produce seeds. This informs the plant that its task has been completed and further flowering is not required.
How to Fix it
Without blooms, sweet peas are not worth the work. So if you discover that the blooms aren’t as fragrant or vividly colored as they should be, investigate further and make sure the plants are growing in the proper conditions. You can solve this problem by following the instructions listed below.
- Light: Sweet peas are no different from other flowering plants in that they crave it. They require between 6 and 8 hours of sunlight each day. They get healthier and blossom more frequently as a result. So move the container to a sunny window sill where you may see more flowers bloom.
- Nutrition: Your sweet peas may suffer unfavorable impacts from poor nutrition. especially if you have been using fertilizers high in nitrogen. Nitrogen can promote a robust, lush, but at the expense of blossoms, foliage. So reduce the nitrogen and increase the phosphorus for the plants.
- Deadheading: It will take a lot of energy for faded blossoms to develop into seeds if you leave them on the plant. Therefore, remove any fading flowers to encourage new blooms.
Why are my pea plants acting strangely?
Some of the diseases that can affect pea plants include asocochyta blight, bacterial blight, root rot, damping off, downy and powdery mildew, fusarium wilt, and different viruses.
Asocochyta blight
Three fungus, Ascochyta pisi, Phoma medicaginis var. pinodella (A. pinodella), and Mycosphaerella pinodes (A. pinodes), cause Asocochyta blight. They can survive the winter in plant debris or spread during planting season on contaminated pea seeds. Spores are spread onto healthy plants by wind and rain.
A blackened stem, yellow leaves with brown blotches, and bud drop are the most common signs of Asocochyta blight, though they might vary according on the fungus that is infected. Severe infections can affect both seeds and pods, and they can also kill seedlings.
As soon as symptoms emerge, sick plants should be removed and destroyed to control Asocochyta blight. Since there are no commercially resistant fungicides, preventive measures such yearly crop rotation with non-susceptible crops and the use of disease-free seed are advised.
Bacterial blight
Similar to the Asocochyta blight, bacterial blight affects pea plants and can survive the winter in infected seed and surface plant waste. Bacterial blight can be brought on by various bacteria, but Pseudomonas syringae is the one that causes it most frequently. Again, water spreads the bacterium that afflicts pea plants, frequently those that have previously been harmed by factors like frost. This can be rain splash, overhead watering, or pet or human activity in a damp garden.
Initially appearing as shiny, dark green water spots on the leaf surfaces, bacterial blight later develops into irregularly shaped patches that are papery, brown to translucent, with a lighter-hued center. The illness will spread throughout the entire plant, including the pods, and cause the bud and immature pods to fall off if left untreated.
Plant professionally produced, disease-free seeds instead of using seeds from other plants, even if they seem healthy, to combat bacterial blight. Every year, rotate the crops and remove any debris in the fall. To stop the spread of this disease in pea plants, water plants at their bases and avoid working around them when the leaves are damp.
Root rot and Damping off
Other typical pea issues made worse by cool, moist soil include root rot and damping off, which are brought on by a variety of fungus. Seeds decay and become soft, while sunken stem lesions cause seedling failure. Peas planted in very damp soil experience root rot, which affects older seedlings.
Fungi that cause root rot cause plants to seem yellowed, stunted, wilted, or just plain dead. Roots will be brown, black, or red, with the outer layer of the root flaking off, if you’re tempted to look. Lesions may occasionally appear.
Purchase commercially cultivated, disease-free seeds or ones that have been fungicide-treated to prevent certain fungal diseases. Reiterate to rotate crops and ensure adequate spacing and planting in well-draining soil. Avoid crossing water.
Downy and Powdery mildew
Both downy mildew and powdery mildew are fungi that spread through spores, although downy mildew does so more readily under cool, wet circumstances than powdery mildew does in the absence of rain.
Crop rotation and the application of fungicides may both be beneficial. At the end of the growing season, remove debris, and buy seeds free of disease.
Fusarium wilt
The fungus that causes fusarium wilt lives in the soil and can also be detected in the remains of dead plants. One of the early symptoms of this illness is wilting, which gradually progresses to fading, yellowing leaves and limited growth. Most plants eventually succumb to this fungal infection and pass away.
Although there are fungicides that could help, the best method to stop the spread of the problem is to avoid infection in your crops. Crops should be rotated regularly, and solarization of the soil can sanitize the soil.
