Did you know that this particular horseshoe geranium used to represent stupidity? I’ll admit that when I learned that, I felt slightly hurt for these flowers. The Language of Flowers, written by Charlotte Latour, is credited as the source of the meaning. In it, the author claims that the illustrious Madame de Stal compared the bloom to a Swiss officer of all things by saying:
It is attractive to the eye, but it smells bad when you even lightly rub it.
It just so happens that I adore the geranium’s fresh, vegetative scent, and I think it’s absurd to equate a flower with folly.
So much so that learning about this extremely judgmental symbolism really led me down a completely bizarre route regarding my personal relationship to the concept of dumb. Specifically, the way I tell myself I’m stupid much too often.
Now, I defiantly do it less. I’ve made a lot of effort to banish this specific type of self-talk. I refrain from saying “I’m foolish” out loud whenever the notion enters my head and instead repeat, “I’m OK, everything is fine.”
Now, when the word “stupid” is used to describe me, I try to conceive of myself as being “dumb like a geranium,” which is not at all stupid. Only because some egotistical jerk said it best back in the day are geraniums linked to idiocy. The many people who love flowers have absolutely nothing to do with it.
The same is true for me, only I’m the arrogant jerk who has been disparaging myself for years, and it has nothing to do with who I actually am. Considering that I’m okay and cherished. I’m as dimwitted as a geranium!
