I’d like to share a chapter from the book with you today in the interim. This chapter discusses various methods for stiffening cloth before cutting out flower sections from it. I have provided some recipes for you to try and evaluate.
It is possible that you would need to use several stiffeners for various types of fabric because they are produced from various substances and perform better or worse depending on the cloth you choose. For instance, gelatine is not a suitable choice for lace since it fills up all the tiny gaps and holes between the threads on the delicate fabric. For lacy textiles, I suggest giving a spray starch a try. Anyway, I wish you loads of patience and enjoyment because choosing the best stiffener requires time and trial.

Before any of the textiles are cut out, they must be stiffened. This keeps the edges from fraying and makes it possible to use the flower iron to shape the leaves and flowers. It also aids in maintaining the shape of the finished flower. There are numerous options for sizing available. Each of them uses a unique combination of ingredients, offering you a variety of possibilities to explore.
- Gelatinesizing is one of the most widely used alternatives. Use gelatin powder from a reputable supplier, which you can find at your neighborhood grocery store. Put two level teaspoons of granulated gelatin in a heat-resistant glass bowl with 200 ml of cold water. Stir it, then pour the water over it and let it soak for around an hour. In general, the concentration is influenced by the cloth thickness. The amount of gelatine needed decreases with cloth thickness. For medium-weight materials like satins, crepes, habotai textiles, etc., this concentration will work. You might want to add a little more gelatine to the organza and chiffon. Over a pot of moderately boiling water, heat the gelatin that has been soaked (bain Marie). Stir continuously until all of the granules are dissolved, then remove the solution from the heat before it boils. Then, carefully remove a piece of cloth from the solution after dipping it in (be careful, the solution will be scalding hot! ), and allow it to drain for a short while. Then hang it up to dry entirely on a clothesline.
- Starch, which is still used today, was utilized in the earliest stiffening solutions. Try this recipe out. Mix: a tablespoon of cornstarch (also known as cornflour), which is the same thing, with a tablespoon of water. 200 ml of boiling water should be added to the mixture, which should then be heated and stirred until it thickens and no lumps remain. Turn off the heat before stirring in a spoonful of premium PVA glue, such as Sobo. Place a piece of fabric on a flat, smooth surface, such as glass or plastic, then use a sponge or a large, flat brush to uniformly spread the stiffening solution across the cloth’s surface. Apply the solution on the wrong side of the fabric if it has a right and a wrong side. Then hang it up to dry entirely on a clothesline.
- I successfully stiffen such delicate textiles as velvet and lace with spray starch (the kind used to starch shirt collars). Simply spray the fabric’s back until it is thoroughly wet, then lay it flat to dry completely before usage.
- The use of wallpaper paste as sizing is an additional choice. As directed by the manufacturer, combine water and wallpaper paste. Apply a brush or sponge to a flat piece of fabric, and then hang it up to dry.
- Fabric stiffening can also be accomplished using white PVA glue. One of the recipes is as follows: 200 ml of warm water should be combined with 2 tablespoons of thick, high-quality PVA glue. After thoroughly stirring, add 1 tablespoon of vodka or other alcoholic beverage. A piece of fabric can be stiffened by dipping it in the prepared solution, letting it drop, and then holding it up to
There are several stiffening solution formulas that can be made. Additionally, there are patented stiffeners that you may purchase online or from craft stores.
- Stiffy is one of them and can be purchased on Amazon and other online retailers. Since it is a water-based stiffener, you can experiment with the solution’s strength. I suggest beginning by combining 1 part Stiffy with 5 parts water. You can experiment with the proportions to discover the ideal solution that works for you based on the thickness of the fabric you’ve chosen.
You can make flowers out of materials that have been artificially stiffened to save time and effort. Even if you do this for the majority of your designs, you might occasionally need to stiffen uncommon fabrics for some of your projects, such as denim, wild silk, linen, etc. For this reason, I advise trying a few of the aforementioned remedies and deciding to employ the one that is simple to apply, made of easily accessible ingredients, and has had the best outcomes going forward.

Leather—is it a material?

When animal skins and hides are chemically treated, or tanned, to prevent decomposition, leather is created. Leather is a tough, flexible, and long-lasting material. Cattle, sheep, goats, horses, buffalo, pigs, hogs, and aquatic creatures like seals and alligators are the main sources of leather in the world. [1][2]
Clothing, shoes, handbags, furniture, tools, and sporting goods can all be made from leather, which also lasts for many years. The technique of creating leather dates back more than 7,000 years, and China and India are currently the top producers of leather. [1] [2][3]
Animal rights organizations assert that modern commercial leather production and the use of its products result in the unethical death of animals.
[4] 99 percent of the raw hides and skins used in the manufacture of leather come from animals reared for the purpose of producing meat and/or dairy products, according to the life-cycle assessment (LCA) report for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization. [5]
Tanneries are criticized for using procedures that aren’t sustainable and endanger the health of those who live nearby and the environment.

Do cows die to make leather?
Over a billion animals are killed each year for their skins and hides by the world’s leather industry.
1 Several of these animals are subjected to the worst aspects of factory farming, such as high crowding and confinement, deprivation, unanesthetized castration, branding, and tail docking, as well as inhumane treatment during transit and killing.
More than simply animal flesh is used to profit from the multimillion dollar meat industry. Consuming meat results in the production of coproducts such as fat and blood, which are used in the production of tires, explosives, paints, and cosmetics, as well as organs, which are used to make pet food and heart valves, which are used in medicine. 2,3 It’s common knowledge that the skin of the animal is a substantial commercial byproduct of the meatpacking business. 4
Cows in the dairy sector have their skin turned into leather as their milk output falls. Their calves, who are typically bred for veal, have hides that are turned into expensive calfskin. The sales of leather items are intimately related to the financial success of dairy farms and slaughterhouses.

Contrary to popular belief, shearing refers to a yearling sheep that has only been shorn once, not to sheared wool. A sheep or lamb’s skin that has been shorn just before being killed is used to make shearling clothing. The wool is still on the skin, which has been tanned.

Animal skin used to be air- or salt-dried, tanned with vegetable tannins or oil, and finished as leather using a variety of much more hazardous compounds, such as formaldehyde, coal-tar derivatives, mineral salts, and numerous oils, dyes, and finishes, some of which are cyanide-based.
The majority of leather produced globally and in the United States is chrome-tanned. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, all chromium-containing wastes are dangerous. Tannery effluent contains substantial concentrations of the hazardous compounds indicated above in addition to other pollutants such protein, hair, salt, lime sludge, sulfides, and acids. Nearly 15,000 gallons of water are wasted at a chrome tanning operation, and up to 2,200 pounds of waste are created “For every ton of hides it processes, it generates solid waste (such as hair, meat, and trimmings).19
The hazard to human health posed by the extremely high amounts of lead, cyanide, and formaldehyde in the groundwater close to tanneries is one of the terrible effects of this toxic waste. Chemical exposure and equipment accidents provide such a high risk in Bangladesh, which exports leather goods to the United States, that workers—many of whom are children—are not anticipated to live past the age of fifty. 20 According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a Kentucky neighborhood near a tannery had a leukemia incidence five times higher than the country as a whole. 21 A common tannery chemical called arsenic has long been linked to lung cancer in employees who are exposed to it frequently. The chromium used in tanning has been linked in several studies to lung and sinus cancer. 22 Studies of leather-tannery employees in Italy and Sweden indicated cancer rates “between 20 percent and 50 percent above [those] expected. 23
Pollution and waste are produced when animals are raised for food and leather. Production of cattle requires a significant amount of fossil fuels; one calorie of beef and 68 calories of pork require around 35 and 68 calories, respectively, of fossil fuel, respectively. 24 The normal American diet, which contains almost 30% animal products, generates nearly 3,300 pounds more carbon dioxide per person year than a vegan diet with the same number of calories, according to research from the University of Chicago. 25
Large amounts of water are used, trees are felled to make pastureland, and run-off from dairy and feedlot operations is a major cause of water pollution. One cow on a dairy farm, according to a California study “emits 19.3 pounds of volatile organic compounds annually, overtaking trucks and passenger cars as the main generator of the smog-causing gas.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations claims that tanneries have mostly moved their operations from industrialized to underdeveloped countries where labor is less expensive and environmental controls are lax.
